Protesters in eastern Sudan complain of marginalization and poverty

A Sudanese government delegation cut short a visit to the east of the country aimed at alleviating popular anger as a result of marginalization and unemployment, amid tension between the government’s civilian and military partners, and renewed fears that the army would carry out a new coup, while an urgent call was issued by the “Committee to Dismantle the Regime of June 30 1989 and the recovery of public funds.

Al-Jazeera correspondent reported that a government delegation cut short its visit to Port Sudan (eastern Sudan), hours after its arrival there, as part of efforts to calm popular anger, explaining that the government delegation decided to return to Khartoum.

The Sudanese government sent an official delegation to the east of the country to calm protests against marginalization and unemployment.

On Sunday, the delegation arrived in the city of Port Sudan (in the east of the country) to resolve the crisis represented in the closure of the national road, ports and airports; To protest marginalization and to demand development.

Subsequently, the "Supreme Council of Beja Opticals and Independent Verticals in Eastern Sudan" announced the approval of opening the Bashayer 2 port for the export of South Sudan's crude oil, in response to the request of the transitional government delegation, and the Council confirmed the continuation of closing other facilities until the government implements the demands submitted to it.

For the tenth day in a row, this tribal council is closing all ports on the Red Sea and the main road between Khartoum and Port Sudan.

The head of the Sovereign Council, Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, said that "what is happening in the closure in the east is a political matter, and it must be dealt with politically."

A government official confirmed to AFP that the delegation had a full mandate to resolve the crisis.

Earlier, the Sudanese Ministry of Oil warned of the financial losses resulting from the closure, and said that the available stock of oil is sufficient for the country for only "10 days", while experts warned of the possible serious economic consequences of the protests in the port.

The pipeline carrying South Sudan's oil extends from the capital, Juba, to the port of Port Sudan for the purpose of export. In return, Sudan benefits from collecting oil transit fees.

Attack and pledge

In another context, a source in the presidential palace in Sudan told Al Jazeera that the joint meetings between the civil and military components of the Sovereignty Council have been suspended since the escalation of the crisis between them, except for the meeting that took place recently to approve the amended general budget, and was dictated by the need to conduct the state's work related to the general budget, according to saying.

The source pointed out that the members of the Council of the civilian component carry out their work on a daily basis from inside their offices in the presidential palace, but the joint meetings are suspended.

Lieutenant-General Al-Burhan continued the attack on the civilian side in the government, as the French news agency reported that Al-Burhan said - during the opening of a military hospital south of Khartoum - that "the armed forces will work to restructure them," and he pledged to cleanse the army of the Muslim Brotherhood, and said, "We will not allow any partisan activity." in the armed forces."

Al-Burhan stressed the army's keenness to hold elections and hand over power by the end of the transitional period. "We, as soldiers, are committed to the elections on the date we agreed upon at the end of the transitional period," he said.

Al-Burhan added that "after the elections, the armed forces will disappear from the political scene."

Sudan has witnessed a tense situation since the announcement of the thwarting of the coup attempt last Tuesday, and with the escalation of the dispute between the power partners in the transitional period, there are fears that the army will carry out a new coup.

Al-Burhan had previously said the armed forces are the guardian of the country, but he stressed on Sunday that "what is rumored about the intention of the armed forces to carry out a coup is pure slander."

Al-Burhan stressed that unless the forces of the revolution unite, "we will not go with a small group that hijacked the revolution," noting that the armed forces are the guardian of the people, and they guard the homeland, and that they will not turn against the "December Revolution" that toppled the regime of President Omar al-Bashir.

Al-Jazeera correspondent from Khartoum, Ahmed Al-Raheed, said that these statements come in the context of the controversy between the military and civilian components that govern the country in a partnership governed by a constitutional document, and this controversy escalated after the coup attempt that occurred last Tuesday morning.

As for Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok, he said that there is no conflict between the military and civilians, but between believers in the democratic transition and those seeking to obstruct it. He also called on all parties to abide by the constitutional document and assume their full responsibilities.

On the other hand, Wajdi Saleh, a member of the committee to dismantle the regime of ousted President Omar al-Bashir and fight corruption, said that members of the committee stand in the face of any coup in the military or civil institutions.

This came in a press conference held at the committee’s headquarters following reports that the Military Council withdrew the joint guard forces from protecting its headquarters, where Saleh stressed in his speech that there is no retreat from the goals of the revolution, and that the army is the ]people’s army and not anyone’s army, as he put it.

Ongoing revolution

On the other hand, the Sudanese Professionals Association called for "an end to the partnership with the military component, the abolition of the constitutional document and the formation of civilian rule."

And today, Sunday, the “Committee to dismantle the regime of June 30, 1989 and recover public funds” said that instructions had been issued to the joint forces guarding the assets and real estate recovered to withdraw and evacuate them immediately,

The committee called on "all revolutionaries to go immediately to the dismantling committee in order to agree on how to secure these headquarters, and the committee described the step as strange."

Sudanese government sources told Al Jazeera that the protection forces were withdrawn from 22 of the sites recovered by the committee to dismantle the Bashir regime.

Sudanese media reported that the Judges Club suspended the work of the courts for 3 days in protest of the dismissal of the Empowerment Removal Committee of 17 judges.

As for a member of the Empowerment Removal Committee in Sudan, Salah Manna, he stressed that the revolution continues and apostasy is impossible.

He said that the committee is "one of the state institutions, and the task of dismantling is one of the revolution's goals." He added, "There is no retreat from the goals of the revolution, and the army is the people's army, not anyone's army."

"We stand today in the face of any coup in the military or civil institutions, and we will not rest until the pockets of the former regime are liquidated by all institutions," he said, stressing that the revolution is fortified by the will of the people.

For its part, the Sudanese Communist Party issued a statement on "the developments and repercussions of the political situation in the country, as a result of the coup attempt."

The party said that "the coup against the revolution began on April 11, 2019 by the Security Committee to block the path to the glorious December revolution, with the complicity of the forces of soft landing, and the regional and international axes."

The party called for the overthrow of "this authority and the establishment of full civil authority that would lead the country to successfully complete the transitional period and meet the demands and aspirations of the revolutionaries for freedom, peace and justice."
