Joe Biden will prove Abiy Ahmed wrong

Post by AbyssiniaLady » 17 Sep 2021, 19:33

PM Abiy Ahmed’s Open Letter to President Joseph R. Biden Jr.

September 17, 2021 Tizita Mengistu

It is essential to point out here that Ethiopia will not succumb to consequences of pressure engineered by disgruntled individuals for whom consolidating power is more important than the well-being of millions. Our identity as Ethiopians and our identity as Africans will not let this come to pass. The humiliation our ancestors have faced throughout the continent for centuries will not be resuscitated in these lands upon which the green, gold and red colors of independence have inspired many to successfully struggle for their freedom!

God bless Ethiopia and its people!

To begin with Joe Biden is not in control. The lobbyists and the state department officials they bought them are. Ethiopia is way more than a match to those bribed souls.

Oromo trying expand Amhara Kilil and appease Isaias are dying and being humiliated for something that's not to their benefits.

Abiy doesn't have great thinkers around him.

He shouldn't rush to reply. He shouldn't be the one doing so.

He could have asked more neutral channels to arrange time with Biden in person.

He should validate concerns, say he too wants to end the suffering through peaceful means but needs US support not pressure.

He got too many Amhara around him and they are horrible at diplomacy and war - everything is arrogance and chop chop chop, weed out, kill all but the crow.

Another Magdala in the making unless Abiy fires them all and starts to think diplomacy.

Abiy is the new kid in school bullied by the biggest bully (Isaias) who is trying to avoid the even bigger bully (West).

This war is about expanding Amhara and exterminating any Tigrinya speaker outside of Kebessa so they can solely claim the language and culture.

There's too much bla bla and cheap arrogance in his letter, which can add fuel to the fire. It doesn't even discuss any solutions.

Instead of writing this useless letter, he should rather dispatch a body of delegates to the US and make use of diplomacy and its tools.

Just a thought!

The Amhara are out of touch. They have no idea.

They long relied on stealing others' works, history and used the Cross for their crocodile tears.

Today they are fish out of water. Cross tears don't work, no one gives rats [deleted] about mythical Solomonic...they have no clue about diplomacy and protocols. Everything with them are threats, aggression, Adwa this Adwa that - a land in Tigray - this letter doesn't serve anything but shows lots of emotions and tantrums.

The PM is under pressures from many sides and people are waiting for his actions. But then again how do you know that the PM may not undertake cool, shrewd and skillful diplomatic actions including requesting audience with President Biden for the purpose of sorting out these issues face to face seating at the table drinking prime Ethiopian organic coffee from Jimma or Wollagga. This is like using President Biden's own initiated communication channel to his own advantage. It does not matter if the outcome is favorable or unfavorable at this time but exchanging ideas verbally as well as with body languages in a face to face situation with out being confrontational is always good and possibly memorable for both. At the moment such trips and meetings may demand exceptional 100% waterproof security arrangements at all times and all places.

Please don't try to talk bad about Amharas when you know very well that they were/are victimized by arrogant greedy tplf oligarchs worshiping money instead of worshiping their lord and through that become God fearing and human respecting creatures. It is not good not to have any moral or ethical standards to guide you and teach you humbleness, modesty and productive positive cooperative attitudes. Tplf is constantly forcing underage children to join militia unites and go to face sure death which is immoral, unethical and criminal, etc. For this single crime category alone tplf needs to face the International Criminal Court (ICC) because this savage behavior alone amounts the willful extermination of Tigrinya speakers for whom you seem to shade artificial and superficial crocodile tears after consuming your bottle of Johnny walker whisky, black label, while constantly blaming the victims all over the places.

PM Abiy and President Issaias are the new LIONS OF AFRICA who will shape the future of the Horn and future of Africa as a whole.FULL STOP! Your Judas envy, jealousy and substandard bad mouthing will only take you down to the bottom of the dirty drain just like it happened to Judas Iscariot in classical times. In fact you should have been born during times of Judas Iscariot instead of being born during this modern times but behaving like ancient wild creatures of Judas time.

Ethiopia could suffer same fate as Zimbabwe

According to Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, The International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank (WB) and the African Development Bank (ADB) cannot extend any loan or credit guarantee to the Zimbabwe government without the approval of the United States president.

Zimbabwe has, for the past 20 years, failed to access lines of credit from international monetary institutions and some of the country's banks are also restricted from trading with international financial institutions.

The United States is already preparing more sanctions against Abiy Ahmed's government that will target businesses, security, Ethiopian Airlines, etc, Ethiopia relies on the United States for its security which most of us are unaware, Abiy is young, naive and inexperienced.

Abiy needs new team otherwise he will soon join the Amhara and Tewodros end.

He thinks poor Ethiopia can resist the US. He needs qualified diplomats not FANO.

It's going to be interesting after the new year unless he changes his stuff and the way he is handling this unwinnable conflict.

Thousands are already starving in Tigray - a man made famine.

The more that die, the more chances he will be removed.

Tigregu are the crocodiles that digest Amhara and the cannon fodder.

The TPLF know nothings please do not advertise your stupidity to the world. Do not confuse yourselves believing that US will rescue TPLF from death. That is not going to happen. Ethiopians will decide the fate of TPLF, and I guarantee you it will die.

On and on goes the man-child. I have never seen a man so unfit for a position, and yet believe in his own foolish essentiality with a messianic zeal! He is the living emblem of a disorder and makes me sick to my stomach that we have to address this psycho in the same vain as other career politicians.

US sanctions on Ethiopia to be effective from January 1

08 Nov '21

President Joe Biden recently announced his decision to omit Ethiopia as a beneficiary of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) trade programme, paving the way for further sanctions against the East African nation over its failure to end a nearly year-long war in the Tigray region, leading to ‘gross violations’ of human rights. The sanction goes into effect on January 1.

Biden’s letter to Congress said Ethiopia has not met eligibility requirements to remain a beneficiary.

AGOA offers sub-Saharan African nations duty-free access to the United States on the condition they meet certain requirements, including eliminating barriers to US trade and investment and making progress toward political pluralism.

Suspension of AGOA benefits is bound to threaten the country’s aspirations to turn a light manufacturing hub. The decision will also affect global fashion brands like The Children's Place, Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein that outsource manufacturing to Ethiopian apparel makers.

The country has spent billions constructing a dozen industrial parks and related infrastructure over the past decade. Ethiopia exported about $237 million worth of goods free of duty to the United States under AGOA in 2020, according to US commerce department data; more than nine-tenths of that was textiles and apparel.

Biden said Ethiopia was in “gross violations of internationally recognized human rights”. He also cited Guinea and Mali, which have experienced coups this year, in the letter for being out of compliance.

US trade representative Katherine Tai said in a statement her office would "provide each country with clear benchmarks for a pathway toward reinstatement and our administration will work with them to achieve that objective.”

The Ethiopian government had lobbied against the move. “We are extremely disappointed by the threat of AGOA withdrawal currently under consideration by the US government," the country’s ministry of trade said in a statement, warning that it will "reverse significant economic gains in our country and unfairly impact and harm women and children. Ethiopia will continue to make every effort to correct any unintended or perceived wrongs.”

US Horn of Africa envoy Jeffrey Feltman told reporters that the humanitarian conditions in Tigray were ‘unacceptable’, a global newswire reported.

Along with Ethiopia, Guinea and Mali will also be removed from the AGOA on January 1, 2022.

Kenya to gain as US restricts Ethiopia goods on Tigray war

Wednesday November 03 2021

Kenya looks set to benefit after the US suspended duty-free access to Ethiopian exports following ongoing unrest in the country’s Tigray region.

The US move to ban Ethiopia opens a window for Kenyan textile and apparel firms to increase their exports to the US

West African Textile Industry Poised to Benefit from Ethiopia Sanctions

By Casey Hall November 11, 2021 06:45

Ethiopia, home to one of Africa’s largest textile industries, will be removed as a beneficiary of the US African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) trade programme in January 2022 due to its failure to halt human rights violations stemming from war in its Tigray region, according to Fibre2Fashion.

West Africa, already a major producer of cotton, is a likely beneficiary of any sourcing shift (Benin, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso respectively rank sixth, seventh, and eighth in the world in terms of cotton production).

The sanctions placed on Ethiopia are likely to give respective governments in West African nations new impetus to attract textile-related investment and improve transportation and logistics. They will be helped by the creation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which came into effect on Jan. 1 this year and has reduced tariffs up to 90 percent on goods traded within the area.

Ethiopia to lose access to lucrative US trade program following CNN investigation

By Nima Elbagir and Arnaud Siad, CNN

Ethiopia used airlines to transport weapons during Tigray conflict 04:15
(CNN)The White House will eject Ethiopia from a trade program between sub-Saharan African countries and the United States over human rights violations, according to a statement Thursday.

Ethiopia was found to be in violation of section 506a of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), the statement added. The clause stipulates that eligible nations must not engage in "gross violations of internationally recognized human rights." The move comes after a CNN investigation earlier this year.
President Joe Biden formally announced the decision in a proclamation, a month after he informed Congress that he intended to terminate Ethiopia's membership of the deal.

Free trade pact to cost Ethiopia 26 bln birr in revenue losses

25 December 2021
By Ashenafi Endale

Ethiopia could lose up to 26 billion birr annually by putting into operation the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), according to a document from the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration. This includes Sur tax, withholding, excise, and VAT tax revenues generated from imports from African countries, which will be tariff free under the AfCFTA.

To operationalize the AfCFTA, countries have to waive the tariffs of 90 percent of the goods and services, which are close to 6,189 items. Even though the AfCFTA will become operational in January 1, 2021, Ethiopia did not offer which goods and items to be made tariff free so far.

The House of Peoples’ Representatives (HPR) and the Council of Ministers (CoM) have recently requested the Trade Ministry to finalize and submit the tariff zero list within two months-time.

“We are still negotiating. The source of origins for automobiles and textile has complicated the issue,” said Muse Mindaye, director of trade relations and negotiations at the Ministry. Once the tariff free items are approved by the Ministry of Finance, Ethiopia will operationalize the AfCFTA.

The document prepared by Trade Ministry states that the AfCFTA will create a stable market for Ethiopian exports, stabilize inflation, boost competitiveness, increase domestic and foreign investments in Ethiopia, modernize trade, formalize informal border trades, strengthen political relations, and create more jobs, among others.

The ‘negative impacts’ of the agreement are fall in customs revenue, shrinking policy space and supply side constraints.

According to NBE’s report, the customs revenue from import of goods and services from Africa grew from 24 billion in 2015 to 26 billion birr by 2019. About 18.9 percent of Ethiopia’s export proceeds in 2019/20 were generated from Africa. Africa accounts for 8.1 percent of the total annual imports of Ethiopia. This means, Ethiopia spends around USD1.5 billion to import from Africa, while export to Africa generates a third of that.

Total customs revenue constitutes over 40percent of Ethiopia’s tax revenue. In the current fiscal year, Ethiopia expects 147 billion birr from import duties, constituting 44 percent of the total 334 billion birr in tax revenue forecasted.

The AfCFTA is expected to boost intra-Africa trade by 53 percent. However, some scholars conclude that comparatively industrialized African economies like SouthAfrica, Egypt, Nigeria and Kenya will dump agrarian economies like Ethiopia.

Nonetheless, Muse says Ethiopia has a much better comparative advantage in coffee, oilseeds, leather, textile and basic metals, among others.
