Excellent academic analysis that chronicles US foreign policy on Ethiopia that historically has been reliant on the servitude of successive Abyssinian feudal warlords whose view of right and wrong was determined by their colonial masters that used Ethiopia as a gateway to exploiting Africa's resources.

The puppeteer Haile Selassie, for example, was executing US policy in the Horn of Africa when he annexed the nation of Eritrea to Ethiopia, and whose unprincipled and reckless ambition had plunged Ethiopia into bloody wars, instability and destruction that resulted in a known terrorist group from Tigray to emerge as absolute rulers to make a very bad situation worse.

    The honorable James F. Byrnes
    Secretary of state
    Washington D.C.

    Dear Mr. Secretary:

My company has only recently completed an agreement with the Imperial Ethiopian government for the development of petroleum in Ethiopia.

I feel rather certain that you, personally, have been informed with request to this agreement. Unfortunately, the country of Ethiopia is an inland country, with no direct water outlet for export shipping. Should we be successful in discovering oil, we would, of necessity, be required to construct adequate pipe line facilities from Ethiopia to a suitable seaport, as well as an export shipping terminal.

If we are to proceed with our development program in Ethiopia, it is of vital importance that Eritrea should be recognized as an integral part of Ethiopia, as we would have a suitable seaport outlet.

Our entire development program will seriously be delayed and affected should Eritrea be under the domination of any other power except Ethiopia. I, therefore, urgently request that your good offices support the demand of Ethiopia with respect to Eritrea.

For your personal information, I am attaching hereto photostatic copy of the supplemental agreement between my company and the Imperial Ethiopian Government, with respect to construction of pipe lines in outboard outlets, from which you will readily see the importance to this project of the acquisition of Eritrea by Ethiopia.

    Very truly yours
    Signed:
    President.
In 1944 Sinclair Petroleum, an American company, signed an agreement with Ethiopia and started petroleum exploration activities in the Ogaden. Until 1951, Sinclair Petroleum drilled 17 exploration wells in the eastern part of the Ogaden basin. The Ogaden sedimentary basin covers 350,000 sq. km. of land. Sinclair Petroleum had noted the existence of oil inflow in one of the exploration wells drilled in Gelladi locality.

Excerpts taken from a book by Professor Theodre M. Vestal titled : The Lion of Judah in the New World: Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia and the Shaping of Americans' Attitudes toward Africa.
As soon as the royal party was settled at the Hotel, Princess Seble, who was a striking figure wearing a gray tailored suit, a white cloche hat with an egret wing, and jade earrings, went immediately to Saks Fifth Avenue, where in less than an hour and a half, she purchased "two evening dresses, a silk suit, a pair of shoes, a hat, a pair of gloves, and a handbag." Later in the afternoon, the emperor, having changed his uniform to a gray business suit, white shirt and figured necktie, made a trip around Manhattan on a special sightseeing tugboat, Dalzellaird, as the guest of Leland Stanford, executive vice-president of The SinClair Oil Company. Upon his disembarkation at Pier 1, His Imperial Majesty received the gift of a Chrysler limousine from Sinclair Oil.

Good stuff
I’m convinced that American interest in the Horn revolves around the oil and natural gas under the Eritrean Red Sea and Somali region of Ethiopia

Rumor has it, when the emperor arrived at Heaven's gate, Saint Michael asked him what he received in return for his services annexing Eritrea to Ethiopia by force, and the midget told him a Chrysler limousine and a gift card for his daughters to go shopping at New York's upscale clothing stores. Then Saint Michael called an Uber to take the emperor to Hell. :P

And?

Haile selassie lived greatfully and comfortably like a modern day ambassador. His great relations with the west was for Ethiopia it was not slavery. He did what he could to ensure Ethiopias greatness other Abysinnians like tewodros challenged the west for no avail only to give strength to non abysinnians. Once Hailemariam Mengistu a non Abysinnian took throne from Aman Andom (an Eritrean Ethiopian that was on the way to ensure a peaceful Ethiopia) Ethiopia fell into many curses including a long war with Eritrea in which TPLF was born
.

Lieutenant General Aman Andom was more Pro Ethiopian and also Pro Eritrean then many Low IQ socialist fanatic Ethiopians themselves

From the first day of his of him becoming chairman, the Ottaways note, "the general found himself at odds with a majority of the Derg's members over most major issues, including whether he was chairman of the ruling military body or simply its spokesman.[5] Aman fought the majority of the Derg over three central issues: the size of Derg, which he felt was too large and unwieldy; the policy to be taken towards the Eritrean Liberation Front (ELF); and over the punishment of the numerous aristocrats and former government officials in Derg's custody. His refusal to sanction the execution of former high officials, including two former prime ministers and several royal family members and relatives, put his relations with the majority of Derg on an especially bitter footing.[citation needed]

As an Eritrean, General Aman found himself fiercely at odds with the majority of the Derg. He wanted to negotiate a peaceful settlement; his opponents hoped to crush the ELF by military force. Aman went as far as making two personal visits to Eritrea—the first 25 August to 6 September 1974, the second in November 1974—giving speeches stating that the end of the Imperial regime was also the end of old practices towards Eritrea, that a government dedicated to national unity and progress would restore peace and prosperity to Eritrea, and lastly that he would begin investigations concerning crimes that the army had perpetrated on Eritreans and punish the guilty.[6]
