Panic after the emergence of Nile crocodiles due to the Renaissance Dam … Khartoum confirms and Egyptian irrigation clarifies -

Sputnik - Many Arab media outlets in Sudan, in addition to social media pages in Egypt, circulated photos and news confirming the exit of crocodiles from the Nile River, which caused citizens to panic.

And the “Sudan Tribune” website quoted the Director of the Civil Defense Department in Khartoum State in Sudan, Major General Othman Al-Atta, in a statement in which he warned citizens against approaching and swimming in the Nile River.

According to the source, with the Nile reaching the flood stage due to the high levels of the Blue Nile River, this increases the risk of the emergence of predatory crocodiles, according to Sudanese media reports, explaining (Major-General Al-Atta) that “the secret is due to the flood waters that push these crocodiles to move from their places.”

Major General Al-Atta said, "The Nile now is dangerous, especially after the emergence of some wild crocodiles and deadly snakes, which endangers the lives of citizens and death."

The Civil Defense in Khartoum warned against moving near the river or in boats, stressing that "anyone who violates these orders will take strict legal measures against him."

This news was accompanied by a state of fear and anticipation in the Egyptian street, especially after news of seeing a crocodile on one of the public roads in the city of Zefti, which is located on the Damietta branch, which frightened the citizens.

According to the statements of one of the citizens, which was reported by Al-Watan, “the crocodile reached a length of 2 to 3 meters, and after a few seconds it went out on the road, it returned to the water again,” but after combing the place only traces of its feet were found.

The source pointed out that "this area in the village of Mit Al-Mukhlis in Zefta is used to the presence of crocodiles. Last year, (Wael Shaaban, an Egyptian marine diver cited by the source) extracted more than one crocodile, from 55 cm in length to large crocodiles."

The sources indicated that the Nile crocodiles (4 to 5 meters in length) are among the most aggressive and capable of preying on humans and animals, as they are distinguished by their great ability to wait for weeks before they pounce on their prey and drag it into the water.

The source quoted the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Irrigation in Gharbia Governorate, Engineer Adel Abdel Qader, who confirmed the denial of the presence of any crocodiles in Zefta Center.

Abdel Qader said that all that was circulated among the citizens were just "baseless" rumors, asking: "How does the crocodile live in a water height of only one and a half meters?"

In turn, the head of the Water Resources Department at the College of African Studies, Dr. Abbas Sharaki, considered that the appearance of these crocodiles is related to “the lake of the Ethiopian dam and the floods, as this lake existed from last year in front of the dam and is more than 100 kilometers long, with an average width of about 10 kilometers, and it currently has about 9 billion cubic meters of water.

Dr. Al-Masry considered that in conjunction with “the floods, the quantities of water go to the body of the dam, so there is only a narrow passage in it, which is the middle passage and its width is 250 meters, and part of the water passes through it and the rest of the flood water passes from above the dam.” He expected that the dam lake would contain crocodiles that rush in With water from the top of the dam due to the force of the flood.

Sharkawy noted that this water could contain “wild insects and reptiles, as the lake covered these places and could move as the water rushes into Sudan,” noting that there are no turbines in the dam with the arrival of crocodiles to Sudan.

And Sharkawy continued, explaining the reason for the absence of crocodiles in the Nile in Egypt: “The High Dam lake has crocodiles and crocodiles in large numbers, but they do not appear, because the water that passes through it passes through openings and a turbine, and therefore, if crocodiles pass through it, the dam’s turbines will chop it, and therefore do not Live crocodiles can pass through these turbines (large-sized water pumping fans), unlike the Ethiopian dam, which has no turbines yet.”
