The report quoted several views of the late Libyan leader’s son, including that he believes that “President Barack Obama’s administration, and not Muammar Gaddafi, is the one who bears responsibility for the destruction that befell Libya. And he might be right.

When the Libyan uprising broke out, Americans faced the same question they later faced with Syria: Should you destroy a country if you don't want to bear the burden of rebuilding it? In the case of Syria, the answer was no. In Libya, the decision to support the NATO military campaign was made under enormous pressure as human rights advocates warned of an imminent massacre (based on differing evidence). The 2011 NATO air strike devastated some areas of Libya, and in the next year the United States abandoned Libya after jihadists assassinated its ambassador, John Christopher Stevens, and three Americans in Benghazi. And in the last year of Obama's presidency, he admitted that the biggest mistake he made while in office was the lack of planning for the post-Gaddafi era in Libya.

Of the rebels against his father's regime, he said: “The whole world was with them. They didn't need to compromise."
