Is A Coup In Ethiopia Imminent?

By Michael Rubin. Published. 3 hours ago

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was once the toast of the international community. He was young, spoke the language of democracy, and was willing to reverse longtime policy to end the border conflict with Eritrea. In 2019, he took home the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.

Today, he is a Nobel embarrassment.

On July 18, 2021, his office issued a statement with the type of ethnic incitement that would make Rwanda’s Hutu génocidaires blush: He referred to Ethiopia’s Tigrayans as “the cancer of Ethiopia” and called on all Ethiopians “to remove the invasive weed.” Human rights organizations and journalists say he is systematically seeking to starve the Tigray province, and he has begun closing or seizing businesses owned by the Tigray. In effect, this replicates what late Ugandan dictator Idi Amin once did with his country’s ethnic Indian population. Both the war and the internal economic disruption have undercut Ethiopia’s already tenuous economy....

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was once the toast of the international community. He was young, spoke the language of democracy, and was willing to reverse longtime policy to end the border conflict with Eritrea. In 2019, he took home the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.

Both the war and the internal economic disruption have undercut Ethiopia’s already tenuous economy.

Rashid Abdi, one of the East Africa’s most insightful and perceptive analysts, now reports via twitter, “Embassies in Addis [Ababa] making contingency plans to move to Nairobi in case situation deteriorates in coming weeks. Economic and financial collapse feared.” He cited one analyst as suggesting the prospects of an internal coup are very high.

Such a scenario is not farfetched. In last month’s elections, Abiy’s party reportedly won 410 out of 436 seats. The State Department, however, called the election “flawed” and international elections monitors pointedly refused to call the polls free and fair. Most opposition remains in prison. The Tigray Defense Force’s recapture of the Tigray provincial capital Mekelle after Abiy claimed victory is an embarrassment Abiy cannot hide. Nor, even with the tight control Abiy’s regime holds over the media, can he hide the images of thousands of Ethiopian troops paraded through the capital as prisoners.

This creates a perfect storm for Abiy. The government wants a scapegoat for their failure, and top generals could target Abiy if only to preempt the prime minister targeting them. Nor is Tigray the only insurgency Ethiopia now faces.  At the same time, the implosion of Ethiopia’s economy means that Abiy is hemorrhaging the support of ordinary Ethiopians in the capital and across the country. While the Ethiopian Birr is officially 44 to the US dollar, it is trading in the Ethiopian-Somaliland border town of Wajaale at 61 to the dollar, a 38 percent drop.

Abiy’s arrogance toward fellow African leaders and the African Union means that, while none care for the precedent of a violent overthrow, neither would any intercede if members of Abiy’s own entourage pushed Abiy aside. Regime change in Ethiopia will be internal and may likely come in a matter of weeks rather than years. Let us hope the White House and State Department are not asleep at the switch, and that the Pentagon is already considering how to achieve a noncombatant evacuation operation for the tens of thousands of American citizens who call Ethiopia home.

Too much silk gloves treatment of you criminals, so that's what he gets! Too slow in eliminating you, so that's what he gets. Too humane with you hyenas, so yes, that's what he gets. Throwing his pearls to pigs, so that's what he'll get!

Coup?
weak and divided military won't do. Most possible civil war and disintegration of Ethiopia, result of mismanagement and incompetence, a reflection of low development of classes or underdeveloped classes :P. For example the concept a people... is nothing more than a group of people living in one locality, not a political community. Land is what they live on what they fight for, so economic community, vegetarians :P. meaning they are not their own masters, have masters (unless they are outside state intervention and similar influences or isolated communities more or less tribal wonderers kkkk), but in reality they are slaves to the land and the political community that controls it... እንዲህ ነው መራቀቅ! :P

Michael Rubin writes not like a scholar, whom he claims to be, but like a political cadre. There is nothing there that slogans fed cadre could not tell us that he wrote. In fact, as a foreigner his distaste of Abiy seems very personal. He characterized his political activity “arrogance.” In fact, the “ wise” scholar who predicted a military coup is in the making within weeks advised the Biden administration and the US State Department to not fall sleep on the wheels.
Why is the American so called scholars are acting crazy nowadays. I think Abiy is a different guy, a leader who does not take orders from the West. The so called scholars who influence the US government policy are not accustomed to it . In other words Rubin missed his yes men in TPLF. Too bad they are not coming back. Get used to it my friend.

I agree. Coup is not possible when foreign security and military agents, whose very existence inside Ethiopia depend on his wellbeing, are there guarding him. Yes, shabia agents will make sure he is not overthrown. He maybe driven out like Menghistu, but coup d'etat is very unlikely.
In the meantime, the coward Issu is clutching his balls hoping weyane will not start heading north. Shaebia is scared sh!!tless and has already fled Badme not to provoke weyane. Lol

Shaebia agents can keep a foreign leader safe in his country from parasites according to this leech, yet their leader is scared of the same parasites in his own country?

What convoluted, logic!

Why then not use the same "bodyguards" for his own sake, instead?

One can say a million things about PIA, but "scared" ain't one of them.

Bozzo,
That's exactly what's going on. In order to divide the surprisingly mighty power of weyane, Mamo qillo keeps blabbering about response and militia gathering for a final push when in fact he has no capacity. This is to save Issu jillo 50 miles away from being dislodged. The two tyrants need each other to save each other's aszes. Little do they know TDF can attack them both at the same time and go after the foTa lebash.

This man seems to be someone experienced in writing "favorable" articles , when the clients are ready to pay, and the tone here doesn't seem to disappoint. I can't call someone writing such a vulgar an scholar, but he has a different yardstick.

Human Rights Watch criticisms
Rubin has repeatedly criticized Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. In 2014, for example, he questioned whether policymakers could trust Human Rights Watch reports after the group held a fundraiser in Saudi Arabia. [7] That same year, he alleged Human Rights Watch had incorporated information that was provided by Alkarama.[8] He also accused Human Rights Watch of fabricating statistics. [9]

UAE/Nasser bin Ghaith controversy
In 2014, the Intercept, in an article about an alleged UAE campaign through the public relations firm Camstoll, mentioned Rubin as a "target" to "plant" stories favorable to the UAE government[10]

In 2016, Rubin wrote an article on the case of Emirati economist Nasser bin Ghaith, criticizing Human Rights Watch's calling for bin Ghaith's release.[11] Bin Ghaith, one of the UAE Five, had been arrested in Abu Dhabi in August 2015 for online comments critical of the Egyptian and UAE governments, including "tweets and images ridiculing the Egyptian president and government" and "claiming that he was tortured and unjustly accused during his previous trial", according to HRW[12] and the Scholars at Risk Network.[13] Rubin criticized HRW for "cherry-picking" and not mentioning that bin Ghaith was charged with "working to overthrow the state" and was a member of the Emirati Ummah Party. HRW amended their report to include the Ummah party accusation which they said had been omitted from the English translation due to an error. Bin Ghaith's family denied those accusations, saying the Ummah party unilaterally appointed bin Ghaith after he was already in prison and one day before the trial session in order to harm him.[14] [15] Rubin reiterated the claims in subsequent articles. [16][17]

In March 2017, both Mansoor and bin Ghaith were sentenced to 10 years in prison.

An analyst at Amnesty International and Ahmed Mansoor accused Rubin of having been paid by the UAE to write the piece on Ghaith.[18] According to Nicholas McGeehan, the analyst from HRW on this case, emails to Yousef Al Otaiba from advisors that were leaked mention Rubin's articles as demonstrating success in encouraging favorable articles.[19]

Such people have also no sense of shame, even if they "prophesied" but that has crumbled on multiple times on themselves. Writers of a fiction don't have to warry about the truthfullness of the content of their writing as far as they may manage to entertain their audiences.
