Ethiopian hospitals trashed by soldiers as Tigray fighting escalates
Four in five hospitals and clinics across the Tigray region have been robbed of vital equipment, with anything that can’t be carried away destroyed
Wrecked medical equipment lay on the ground. Packets of medicine were strewn across a pharmacy floor. Deserted wards had been stripped of everything except the bed frames.
In peacetime, Hawzen Primary Hospital in the northern Tigray region of Ethiopia served more than 100,000 people. The Times found it standing empty, trashed and abandoned. Upended filing cabinets blocked doorways and the floor was thick with tattered medical records. In one treatment room a pile of chicken feathers lay next to scorch marks from an abandoned cooking fire.
Scenes like this can be found across Tigray, where fighting has been raging since early November after months of growing tensions between the federal government and the province’s former ruling party, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
