Secret video smuggled out of Eritrea’s prisons has revealed how the hermit regime is imprisoning and torturing dissenters for years without trial.

Six people, including a prisoner and a guard, provided a rare insight into the east African country’s vast prison network by filming conditions inside jails.

Video shared with Channel 4’s Dispatches shows hundreds of prisoners living in holding cells so cramped that they must sleep on their sides because there is no room to lie flat.

“Many have lost their minds,” Michael, a former prisoner who secretly filmed the conditions, said, adding that many inmates were there because they tried to flee across the border to escape compulsory military service.
