Continuing Atrocities and Denial of Humanitarian Access in Ethiopia’s Tigray Region
Press Statement
Antony J. Blinken, Secretary of State
May 15, 2021

The United States is gravely concerned by the increasing number of confirmed cases of military forces blocking humanitarian access to parts of the Tigray region.

This unacceptable behavior places the 5.2 million people in the region in immediate need of humanitarian assistance at even greater risk.
The United States unequivocally calls upon the Governments of Eritrea and Ethiopia to take all necessary steps to ensure that their forces in Tigray cease and desist this reprehensible conduct.

We also again call on all parties to comply with obligations under international humanitarian law, including those relevant to the protection of civilians, and to cease immediately all hostilities and allow relief to reach those suffering and in greatest need of assistance.

The Ethiopian government should lead in this regard and immediately facilitate full and unhindered access for humanitarian actors to all parts of the Tigray region.

There are many credible reports of armed forces in Tigray committing acts of violence against civilians, including gender-based violence and other human rights abuses and atrocities.

The conduct of the Eritrean Defense Forces and Amhara regional forces have been particularly egregious. The continued presence of Eritrean forces in Tigray further undermines Ethiopia’s stability and national unity.

We again call upon the Government of Eritrea to remove its forces from Tigray. Both Eritrean and Ethiopian authorities have repeatedly promised such a withdrawal, but we have seen no movement towards implementation.

We equally urge the Government of Ethiopia to withdraw Amhara regional forces from the Tigray region and ensure that effective control of western Tigray is returned to the Transitional Government of Tigray.

Prime Minister Abiy and President Isaias must hold all those responsible for atrocities accountable.

Just ignore the noise making, and the Ethiopian government keeps doing what it does. I see a failure on Abiy administration’s part here, why doesn’t the boundary and border commission change the tplf Tigray kilil to the current Tigray, and officially incorporated wolkayit and raya to Amhara kilil... like yesterday... the Ethiopian government is in charge and can change the narrative of the talking points of the ferenjis... preemptively... take away their talking points by changing the reality on the ground....

Thank you! This is what I have saying so many times. The real issue is super-power contention in HoA. So far China, Russia and India and I hope African Union too are on our side. US/EU and Arabs/Egypt are against us. What does the US want? It want to replace or decrease Chinese economic domination of Africa and Chinese military global projection. Ethiopia simply happens to be a poor or weak fighting ground. And, this is where ingenuity must kick in.... we can make this American adventure & entanglement in Ethiopian tribal politics too costly for the US.

@Jaegol: as you said it perfectly, the Abiy adminstration could accuse America for supporting a terrorist group already outlawed legally. Thus, America must sur up in that regard. And I totally agree that one of the best solutions to neutralise Americas say in Ethiopian politics is to do something about ethnic demarcations, the soonest possible

@AbyssiniaLady and Horus put it very well that America is angry about the Chinese domination in the African content and the Americans know that Ethiopia is both a gateway (geopolitically) and a weak link to break in (due to the ethnic politics). Abiy as he promised earlier should hit back and tell them this is Ethiopia, in which no one has the right to meddle in its internal affairs.

Blinken is a bloodsucker jwesh who is conspiring with Egypt to destabilize Ethiopia and control the matter on GERD. And GERD issue is not just a dam or water sharing issue alone. I get a kick out of reading some people's comments contemplating as to which side of the two camps (blocs) Ethiopia should be on by limiting themselves to only two options.

But I have great news for such people!

There's a third option, and it's not a combination of the other two options. The third option is a different option. In fact, it's the option we Eritreans have taken since our independence, and it's a practical and long-held stance of not taking sides in the East-West tug of war by drawing strength from within our own people. Yes, I'm talking about People power! And it has no limits.

In Ethiopia, where there was never a government by the majority throughout its history, all past ethnic minority regimes had to rely on the strengths of global powers to reign in on the majority, and this created a master/slave relationship that categorically placed the country under a new form of colonization. If you get out of colonization, to only get colonized by another global power, there's no freedom in that.

Of course, there's always a price to pay for not taking sides, but the benefits outweigh the risks of being colonized by either sides.

Therefore, think of the Third Option. People's Power. In fact, no where was the third option more evident than in Ethiopia in 2018, on which the People's Power triumphed over the neo-colonial rule by overthrowing the TPLF terrorists that occupied the Menelik Palace.

The rock-throwing Ethiopian kids that chased the Tigray terrorists all the way to Mekele didn't need to take sides, because it was an exercise of People's Power. The kids took the less traveled path which is the Third Option! People's Power. There's an important lesson to draw from this experience.

I understand your point but our discussion is not about choice of a master. You know we Ethiopians. Here is the relevant fact. Ethiopia can't afford to be an isolated, walled off mountain kingdom. The world is transactional and networked. Nations are transactional networked. Almost every nation on earth belongs to some kinds of bloc - economic, political, diplomatic, military etc. The idea of being outside these world realities alien to the idea of political leadership and statecraft which includes war and diplomacy.

So, let us face the reality today. There are 4 or 5 super powers - China, US, Russia, India, EU & (AU) African Union. There so many global economic, financial, military systems into which states are linked or entangled. So Ethiopia as a nation that aims to become a regional power in 20/30 years can't live an isolationist survivalist life.

so the question is about choosing managing our friends and allies as well as our enemies and competitors. For example, African Union is a Soft Super Power we must fully marshal to empower ourselves. We must ally with India on all fields political economy, military and diplomacy. These same with some wealthy Arab nations ...

There are ways of fully playing the global games while remaining an independent country and a free people.
