US Attempt To Make Pronouncements On Ethiopia’s Internal Affairs Regrettable :MoFA

Post by Ejersa » 28 Feb 2021, 16:02

Addis Ababa, February 28, 2021 (FBC) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia (MoFA) has rejected the press statement issued by the US Secretary of State Mr. Antony J. Blinken yesterday regarding Tigray regional state.

“An attempt by the US to make pronouncements on Ethiopia’s internal affairs and specifically, the reference to the Amhara regional forces redeployment in the press statement, is regrettable,” MoFA said.

“It should be clear that such matters are the sole responsibility of the Ethiopian government, which as a sovereign nation, is responsible to deploy the necessary security structures and means available in ensuring the rule of law within all corners of its borders,” it added.

Read the full statement issued by MoFA below:

On the US Statement on the situation in the Tigray region

The Government of Ethiopia’s prevailing focus and priority has been and still is to effectively respond to the humanitarian situation in the Tigray region. In doing so, it continues to collaborate and coordinate its actions with international partners to reach out to every person in need.

It should be noted that the Ethiopian government thus far is covering 70% of the assistance from its resources, while the remaining 30% is shared by development partners and NGOs. So far, the ongoing relief efforts have reached out to more than three million people. Priority is being given to people in vulnerable situations, particularly for women and children.

With the significant improvement in the security situation in the region, the government has now allowed unfettered access to humanitarian actors. It has also put in place an expedited clearance system to remove the bureaucratic hurdles in securing the necessary permits to operate in the region.

Accordingly, the World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director David Beasley has confirmed the important progress that has been made in the humanitarian response, while also underscoring the need to do more. The international community needs to respond to his urgent appeal for more resources to scale up the ongoing relief operations, instead of continuously lamenting the dire humanitarian situation in the region.

On the other hand, the Ethiopian government has made its position unequivocally clear concerning human rights abuses and crimes allegedly committed in the Tigray region. The government of Ethiopia takes its responsibility for the safety, security, and well-being of all Ethiopian citizens very seriously. That is why it is fully committed to undertake thorough investigations to get to the bottom of the issue and bring perpetrators to justice. In this connection, the government not only welcomed the support of international human rights experts but also signaled the possibility of collaboration on joint investigations with the relevant human rights bodies.

Therefore, the government has shown its determination to engage positively and constructively by responding to the two major requests of the international community, i.e., unfettered access for the delivery of humanitarian assistance and independent investigation into the alleged human rights violations and crimes committed in the Tigray region. These are also the main issues raised by the US Secretary of State Mr. Antony J. Blinken in his press statement issued on 27 February 2021.

However, an attempt by the US to make pronouncements on Ethiopia’s internal affairs and specifically, the reference to the Amhara regional forces redeployment in the above-mentioned press statement is regrettable. It should be clear that such matters are the sole responsibility of the Ethiopian government, which as a sovereign nation, is responsible to deploy the necessary security structures and means available in ensuring the rule of law within all corners of its borders.

The Ethiopian government, like any government of a sovereign nation, has in place various organizing principles in its Federal and Regional structures which are solely accountable only to the Ethiopian people. The Federal Government is mandated by the Constitution to ensure peace and security against any threats to the Constitutional order of the country. It is in the spirit of this responsibility and holding a nation together from treasonous and divisive forces that the Federal government has been undertaking the rule of law operations in Tigray.

Ethiopia has an unwavering commitment to honoring its international responsibilities, despite the destabilizing nature of the challenges that ensued due to the high treason of a criminal clique. Nevertheless, honoring international obligations and responsibilities should not be deemed by any entity as an invitation to dictate a sovereign nation’s internal affairs

I didn't read the so called statement of the State Department but guessing from this statement of the MoFA of Ethiopia, should I assume that Ethiopia is now paying for the actions of the guy calling himself Col. Demeke Zewde?

I was the first to call for the rule of law on this forum regarding the guy and no one wanted to listen, and now the government of USA is doing the same, so I shouldn't wonder myself here.

I don't agree with everything the US-government is trying to impose on smaller countries and their sovereign govenments but in this case the demand is in the best interest of the country itself and better to listen.

DTT, you as an Ethiopian have the right to talk, write, demonstrate about the internal affairs of Ethiopia. That is your birthright. But the USA had no right to tell Ethiopia where and when Ethiopians should move or not move within our own country . We as Ethiopians could debate whether Welkiat is an Amhara land or not.
But USA has no any right to tell to whom it belongs. That is practically what US Secretary of State did. It is an arrogance of the highest proportion.
Practically he was saying we Americans has the right to lay out Ethiopian geography as we wish.
No, Mr. Secretary. You cannot do that.

Here we go again the song about Col.Demeke Zewde is filling the air? What is supposedly Ethiopia is paying for? It's paying for the incompetency of the information Minster and the Ethiopian foreign minister. They can not come out and make even a denial statement about what is being propagated by Weyane toltulas. So you can put the blame on the incompetency of the government. Weyanes used to attack the truth with lie and get away with it , but Abiy's government can't attack the lie with truth. But you are attacking a person who paid dearly to free his people from Weyane ethnic cleansing on a grand scale. A person who rightfully bleeds for Oromo farmers who have been uprooted by their own officials, to be so nonchalant about welkite Amharas who have been exterminated from their land by weyanes for 27 years and for you to make a judgement about Demeke being a problem is mindboggling. Again America approaches Ethiopia to protect its own interest nothing else. Ethiopia has to stand firm when it comes to its national interest and shouldn't kowtow because America says something. American lead by Susan is geared to resuscitate weyanes from its grave, Abiy should be ready to pay whatever necessary to ascertain its independence and national interest. Weyanes bold enough to start the war against EDF and Amhara region and they lost the war . And the rightful people got what is their own,, and they aren't going to fall under Weyane or their sympathisers. Specially after Makadra genocide, the book is closed come hell or high water.

Yes, sadly the US government and its satellite western governments would not stick their nose in some independent sovereign countries like Ethiopia. But, also, sadly, the Eritrean people have been a victim of malicious propaganda and economic sanctions by these same so-called democracies. We have been abused by these people for so long we sometimes don't even think about their mischievous behavior towards Eritrea for we are used to their actions. It may be a new experience for our Ethiopian brothers and sisters. However, trust me, you will get over it if you stood your ground firm and steadfast against any and all evils that may be hurled at you by the ferenjis.

Sam Ebalalehu and TGAA,

First let me say, one more time here again, that I don't know whom the said area belongs to, historically or even legally. As such I am not concerned much about who should have it or not as I am concerned about the legality of the steps taken by those who moved in and said, no more an inch from here.

What I am saying from the beginning is simple and it is all about making one's claims according to the rule of law.

Rule of law is a universal value, everybody can demand it, irrespective of one's own national boundary. Nations are not existing in an isolated world of their own, they do interact and cooperate in many different ways. If something illegal may happen somewhere in this world, then the rest of the nations do have a legitimate interest to demand the restoration of the rule of law.

As such the American government does have a legitimate right to demand to uphold the rule of law in Ethiopia or somewhere else, failing to do so can entail to be held accountable to their own electorates. The American people can demand from their government about why they didn't demand the rule of law from their cooperative partners, and many countries around the world do the same.

We, the Ethiopians, do have to prove to the rest of the world that we handled according to the rule of law of our own land. Can we show them that we were handling under the premises of rule of law of our own land?

The officially stated purpose of the recent military action in the Tigray region was to restore the rule of law, after TPLF blatantly attacked the national army of the country itself and wanted to restore its supremacy of power over the country and I didn't here that part of the mission was also about reclaiming lost territories. You can correct me, if I missed something here.

DTT, I know this much. Before the TPLF came to power Welkait and Humera belongs to the province of Begimder,Gonder.
But I have not reacted to the US Secretary of State statement because of that knowledge. Not at all. I just sincerely believe no country — how wealthy and powerful— should try to involve in Ethiopian internal affairs. That is a no, no.
As for the crises in those two mentioned regions, I hold TPLF responsible. The people of the regions did not vote to do away with Gonder, and Join Tigray. They were told from hereon they are part of Tigray.
I value federalism. I have respect to it.
But ethnic federalism however is a disaster. It does not bring people together ; it tears them apart.
