Forage based dairy production piloted in Debarwa Sub-zone

Ministry of Agriculture Newsletter - Issue No 28, October 2020

https://shabait.com/2020/10/19/forage-b ... -sub-zone/

NATION BUILDING

A forage based dairy project which is being piloted in Dubarwa Sub zone of the Southern Region, has brought satisfactory outcomes to beneficiary farmers.

According to Mr. Ermias Kflay, Coordinator of the community based dairy project and Animal Production Researcher in the National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI), the pilot project commenced in 2014 with 20 beneficiaries in 7 villages of Debarwa Sub-zone. The number has, currently, increased to 47 beneficiaries from 16 villages, who have fully adopted the forage-based production system and are registering commendable progress from time to time.

This newsletter presents success story of a beneficiary from the project.

Mr. Ermias Kflay
If there is a small scale dairy farmer to be looked up to as a pacesetter, it is Mr. Abraham Tesfatsion. He is a living proof that proper utilization of forages leads to the desired performance of the dairy farm,
Mr. Ermias stated.

Mr. Abraham’s achievements are seen as benchmarks and aspirations to be looked up to by other beneficiaries. The farmer has registered extra-ordinary scores in all the achievement indicators like milk yield, milking days, age at first calving, calving frequency, conception rate of the cows, percentage of milk sold, percentage of lactating cows and etc.

Milk yield amounting on average to 10 liters/cow per day has been consistent in his farm, which has sustained supply to his calves and his entire household. Despite the long distance, the milk is also merchandized to the neighborhoods and to the milk collection center in Dubarwa town.

During the onset of the project in 2014, Mr. Abraham was presented with an in-calf heifer which calved soon after. Pertaining to the contract of the project, the good quality heifer was passed on to another beneficiary. The heifer gave birth to a female calf which in turn grew to the point of being transferred as a mature heifer to another new beneficiary in another village.

Thanks to the project, Mr. Abraham bought a motor-pump at 45,000 Nakfa to diversify his activity in to horticultural products and has improved his livelihood. Mr. Abraham’s herd size has increased from one in-calf heifer in 2014 to six heads in 2020 without counting the passed-on heifer and the bull sold.

There are a majority of females in his farm in which two are lactating pregnant cows, two are growing heifers awaiting service, one female calf and one mature bull. This farmer has now turned his dairy farm into a self-contained unit as he is using his own bull to serve his cows. The bull also serves the cows in the village free of charge.

NARI reinforces laboratory Seed testing

Ministry of Agriculture Newsletter - Issue No 28, October 2020

https://shabait.com/2020/10/19/nari-rei ... d-testing/

GENERAL

The National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI), has been giving precedence to determine the viability of seeds through laboratory testing, as seeds with low yield capacity are predicaments in agriculture. Seed testing has been developed, to minimize the risk by assessing the quality of seed before it is sown.

Ms. Yohanna Ghirmay

According to Ms. Yohana Ghirmay, a laboratory technician in NARI, the Ministry of Agriculture launched Seed testing laboratory in 2001. Ms. Yohana also stated that, the seed testing laboratory conducts three main tests namely; seed purity analysis, seed germination capacity and seed moisture content.

Seed Quality Testing has had different attributes which interest different segments of the industry; the producers, processors, traders, farmers, the regulatory authority and the government or agency responsible for seed control.

Seed Purity Analysis

Seed Purity Analysis determines, as its main objective, the percentage composition by weight of inert particles of the sample and by inference of the seed lot. As the working sample is separated into pure seeds, other seeds and inert matter; the percentage of each part is then determined by weight. The size of the working sample should weigh, at least, 2500 seed units.

Germination Test

Ms. Yohana underlines the importance of laboratory test emphasizing that,
seed germination test is the main seed test that is implemented to determine the maximum germination potential of a seed sample, which can then in turn be used to compare the quality of different lots higher productivity. Testing under field conditions is normally unsatisfactory, as the result cannot be repeated with reliability. Laboratory methods have, therefore, been established in which the external conditions are controlled to give the most dependable, rapid and comprehensive germination level for the majority of samples of a particular species. So when it’s said that germination of a seed in a laboratory test, it is the emergence and development of the seedling to a stage where its essential structures indicate whether or not it is able to develop in to a satisfactory plant under favorable conditions in the field.
According to Ms. Yohana, the duration of the test of individual species differ from crop to crop. Usually the test of cereals and legumes takes 7 days and for vegetables and fruits the test takes 15 days. She also indicated that the service is given to different partners like farmers; regulatory authorities of the government or agencies that are responsible for seed control.

Moisture Test

Moisture content test of seeds, is designed to determine the water content of seeds through suitable methods. The moisture content of a sample is the loss in weight, when it is dried. It is expressed, as a percentage of the weight of the original sample.

Continuing her explanation, Ms. Yohana recommended;
Seed is a living biological product and its behavior cannot be predicted with certainty, compared to the testing of inert or non-biological material. Therefore, seed analysis is important as seed moves across international frontiers. In all cases, the ultimate objective of making test is to determine the value of seed.’
Finally, Ms. Yohana called upon farmers and other agricultural institutions to make best use of this classic laboratory technology prior to planting to boost their production and productivity.

On Oct. 17, 1993 Eritrea became a member of ICAO. On Jan 20, 1993 Ethiopia transferred control of Eritrean air space & payment of users fees to Eritrean Civil Aviation. The Asmara International Airport was built in 1922, & commercial flights to & from Eritrea began in 1935. @icao

On Oct 18, 1970, the US DoS & DoD disclosed that in 1960 the U.S had entered into a secret agreement with Ethiopia to equip & train 40,000 Ethiopian army to fight Eritrean freedom fighters & meet a threat from Somalia in exchange for the expansion of Kagnew Station in Eritrea.

The question is rather, since this is an open forum, why did it take my posts about Eritrean achievements to remind you of his existence? (No need to put them under quotation marks, cos they're real achievements; not imaginary).

Just post it, & tell everyone!

Here're, some local achievers:

During the Third Committee's interaction with High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, Eritrea welcomed the engagement with the third committee and expressed the following:

COVID19 has compounded existing challenges and has exposed the often faulty assumptions, separating countries into those that are human rights upholders and those that are abusers.

Human rights challenges affect all of us, some due to the lack of institutional developments and capacity, while others as a result of deeply rooted structural inequalities and unequal distribution of wealth and power among societies.

Eritrea supports, the Office’s efforts to promote universal respect for all human rights by all countries. Paying the same attention to all human rights violations and avoiding selectivity and politicization, are very critical to maintaining credibility of the Office.

Stronger engagement with member states, results in effective implementation of their obligations & in this regard called for constructive engagement on HR.

The need for further consultation and cooperation with member states in the OHCHR's undertaking of various initiatives.

Welcomed OHCHR’s support, to the elaboration of a draft legally binding instrument on the right to development and its operationalization in the implementation of the SDGs.

Welcomed efforts to bringing awareness to issues of racism, discrimination & xenophobia as well as support for states’ implementation of the GCM.

Eritrea's readiness to continue working closely with the office, as current member of the Human Rights Council.

Trump says US to remove Sudan from state sponsors of terrorism list

US president says transitional government agreed to pay $335m to 'US terror victims and families'

US President Donald Trump made the announcement over Twitter (AFP/File photo)

By MEE staff in Washington

https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/trum ... orism-list

19 October 2020

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Washington will remove Sudan from its list of state sponsors of terrorism after the country's transitional government agreed to pay $335m to
US terror victims and families.
New government of Sudan, which is making great progress, agreed to pay $335 MILLION to U.S. terror victims and families. Once deposited, I will lift Sudan from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list. At long last, JUSTICE for the American people and BIG step for Sudan!
Trump, who is seeking re-election next month, said in a Twitter post.

Trump's announcement brings an end to formal discussions which have taken place since 2018 over the payment. The past few months saw intensified negotiations between both sides.

Khartoum's removal from Washington's State Sponsor of Terrorism (SST) list is a major step in Sudan's efforts to reintegrate into the international community after last year's uprising toppled longtime leader Omar al-Bashir.

The monetary compensation would go to the victims of the 1998 US embassy bombings in East Africa and the attack on the USS Cole, a guided-missile destroyer, in 2000 off the coast of Yemen.

The attacks in Kenya and Tanzania killed more than 220 people, including US citizens and locals who worked at the embassies. In 2000, two suicide bombers targeted the USS Cole, killing 17 service members.

All three attacks were claimed by al-Qaeda. In subsequent years, Khartoum faced lawsuits in the US accusing the Sudanese government of harbouring the al-Qaeda operatives who planned and carried out the bombings.

The remaining countries on the US's terrorism list are Iran, North Korea, and Syria.

Sudan was initially placed on the US list in the early 1990s, when now-ousted President Omar al-Bashir hosted al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. The country continues to suffer under heavy economic sanctions.

Step toward normalisation with Israel

Officials told https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/19/worl ... orism.html the New York Times that Sudan's removal from the terror list could pave the way for normalisation with Israel.

Israel signed US-brokered diplomatic agreements with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain last month, breaking longstanding consensus among Arab states that normalisation with Israel be contingent on a resolution to the Israeli occupation and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

Both Israeli and US government figures have repeatedly hinted since August that other Arab countries would follow in the two Gulf states' footsteps.

Although a number of countries are known to have had unofficial relations with Israel for years, they have yet to follow suit and formalise those ties.

Several polls have shown that a majority of citizens in the region remain opposed to normalisation with Israel.

In February, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met in secret with Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the chairman of Sudan's ruling Sovereignty Council, in Uganda, and the two leaders reportedly agreed to start the process of normalising ties.

In August, the UAE arranged an unannounced meeting between Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (also known as Hemeti), vice president of the Sovereignty Council and commander of the Rapid Support Forces, and the head of the Israeli Mossad, Yossi Cohen, to discuss prospects for normalisation.

Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok said https://africanbusinessmagazine.com/reg ... ys-hamdok/ that the terrorism designation and normalisation with Israel should be viewed as two separate tracks.

Israel and Sudan have never enjoyed official bilateral relations, although Israel does enjoy close relations with South Sudan, which split from Sudan in 2011.
