Please.Green eyed agame, stop looking at Eritrean ports, Ain't going to happen. Both EPLF and TPLF leadership are still at the helm 30 years later. Both hate each other's guts. Both are determined to destroy each other. TPLF will start war under the guise of Eritrean opposition. That will put Isayas in a predicament. He will take the war to Meqele with Abiy's permission. Abby most likely will look the other way. If he doesn't, Isayas will have no choice but to make peace with the Eritrean opposition. Mark my word, Isayas will never let TPLF alone as long as he is in power. For peace to prevail, both leadership need to surrender power to the people whom they claim they liberated in the first place.

it was a combination of things, such as, the low morale of the army due to stupid decisions made by mengistu, the various other rebel armies who weakened the derg too [OLF, TPLF, and so on], and other issues.
as far as tplf goes, they know better than to fight ethiopia. i would hope that the decent tigrayans would also realize this would hurt them more than anyone else.

I don't want to in anyway diminish the contribution of others in the fall of the dergue, but the overwhelming work & sacrifice was done by Shaebia. If Menghistu's most experienced & battle- hardened units weren't defeated in Eritrea (consisting of 6 huge offensives & 1 stealthy, the trench warfare of Sahel, the destruction of Nadew, the fenql offensive in Massawa etc), he wouldn't have any problems in pacifying Ethiopia by pulling his army southwards. Later too, the EPLF mechanized units' contribution within Ethiopia until the occupation of Addis was immense.

I'd say, a large portion of it, yes, but not all of it, nor would the toppling of the derg in ethiopia proper, have been possible without shabia coordinating its efforts with tplf, and others... hence the reason why they had an alliance, albeit tactical, with the TPLF. remember, it was tplf who helped shabia defeat jebha and push them out of eritrea, this was when tplf officially took badme, by replacing jebha there, btw, but shabia's top leaders, such as Obbo Isayas, overlooked it, due to the priority being handling the derg.

I believe the derg would've been defeated within Ethiopia, eventually, with or without shabia, simply because the people were growing more and more discontented with it... the masses play the biggest role in any revolution or struggle.... more so, than the soldiers.
you cannot rule a people who detest you, for long, especially in a place like Ethiopia. So, eventually, OLF, TPLF, and others, would have dismantled the derg within ethiopia.

The weyane contribution in the defeat of the ELF, eventhough there, is grossly exaggerated. Yes, some units consisting of approx. a thousand fighters participated. The ELF, for the most part fell, because of inner fructure. It opted from the beginning to be decentralized & its units divided on religious & tribal terms. That's why, most Elf-ites opted for exile; instead of staying put & fight the EPLF. The dissatisfaction with the leadership was huge amongst its ranks.

With that logic, we can add the contribution of the russians in aiding Menghistu as well. So much so, some of their generals and army leaders- were POW's in Eritrea.
One other issue easily overlooked is Eritrea's topography. Its mountainous terrain is very fitting, for a guerilla type insurrection. In Ethiopia, I really don't know. You know better about that.

I agree though, that Ethiopians would've eventually overthrown the dergue but how long it would've taken them is just gonna be a guessing game & an exercise in futility.

There is no need to explain the defeated TPLF cadres. The majority best DERG fighters was stationed in ERITREA the strategic place. On the other hand TIGRAY is not a strategy place nor important region compare to Eritrea, for thuse there was no real DERG presence in Tigray. Weyane was just local SHIFTA with a lot of noise.
