Switzerland signs a deal to buy millions of doses of this vaccine

Source: Geneva - AP
Moderna is working on a possible vaccine for Coronavirus
The Swiss federal government said it had concluded a deal with Moderna to supply Switzerland with 4.5 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine if the American biotechnology company succeeded in developing one.
The Federal Office of Public Health says the agreement aims to "ensure that Switzerland has early access to Moderna vaccine" and is one of the first deals any government has made with the company.
"The federal government wants to ensure that the Swiss population has speedy access to a safe and effective Covid-19 vaccine. Meanwhile, Switzerland is supporting multilateral projects for a fair distribution of the vaccine in the future," said a statement of the office on Thursday.

She added that the Modena deal will make it possible to vaccinate 2.25 million people, because expectations indicate the need for two doses. That would be enough for more than a quarter of the rich Alpine nation's 8.2 million people.
The Swiss government is also in talks with other vaccine companies and has already allocated 300 million Swiss francs (nearly $ 330 million) to buy the Covid-19 vaccine. The value of Moderna's deal was not specified.
Early trials found that an experimental Moderna vaccine, developed in cooperation with the US National Institutes of Health, activated people's immune systems. A larger-than-expected study of 30,000 people began last month and hopes to show that the vaccine is strong enough to protect against the Coronavirus.
The agreement comes amid a thorny debate over who should get a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine

Senegal reintroduces restrictive measures to combat COVID-19 as cases rise

Senegal has reintroduced restrictive measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus, following a pronounced rise in cases.

The Senegalese Minister of the Interior Aly Ngouye Ndiaye told a press conference in Dakar that, since the lifting of the state of emergency, the government had noticed what he called "a certain laxity" amongst members of the public in terms of masks and social distancing.

He said figures clearly demonstrated a very large increase in recorded cases during May, from 757 to 2,737.

Russia to register first COVID-19 vaccine on August 12

Russia will register its first vaccine against the coronavirus on August 12, Deputy Health Minister Oleg Gridnev said.
The vaccine has been developed jointly by the Gamaleya Research Institute and the Russian Defence Ministry.
"The vaccine developed by the Gamaleya centre will be registered on August 12. At the moment, the last, third, stage is underway. The trials are extremely important. We have to understand that the vaccine must be safe. Medical professionals and senior citizens will be the first to get vaccinated," Gridnev told reporters at the opening of a cancer centre building in the city of Ufa.
According to the minister, the effectiveness of the vaccine will be judged when the population immunity has formed.

Conquering COVID-19 and other infectious diseases

Our nation’s response to COVID19 has greatly benefited from years spent battling HIV and hepatitis. But those wars are not over. Ingredients are still needed to end these two infectious diseases.

Imagine if we had a treatment for COVID-19 that works nearly 100% of the time, or a cure, and we did not provide it to the people. That is what we are doing today when it comes to HIV and hepatitis C , .......
