U.S. Aid Plan Falters; Olympic Cancellation Vetoed: Virus Update

Negotiations on a massive U.S. aid package may be faltering as Democrats diverge from Republicans on the measure. The White House hopes for a vote Monday on the more than $2 trillion plan.

Citizens in Europe are under tighter restrictions as Germany, Italy and Greece added limits. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is in quarantine. Senator Rand Paul tested positive.

A regional Fed president said unemployment may hit 30% in the second quarter. New Zealand’s central bank will buy bonds this week to further stimulate the economy.

Democrats Pan GOP Aid Proposal (3:45 p.m.)

The latest draft of Senate Republicans’ rescue package has swollen with hundreds of billions in additional spending, including more for the poor, the unemployed and health care. But Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has yet to win the agreement of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Pelosi left a meeting in McConnell’s office saying that the House would file its own bill -- an ominous sign for getting an economic rescue package signed quickly into law.

McConnell initially expressed optimism a deal would get done for a Monday vote on the final bill. But strong opposition from Democrats led him to delay a procedural vote on Sunday afternoon.
