The lay faithful of the Archeparchy of Asmara,

God has made wonders for his people in the Archeparchy of Asmara through the evangelization work of the Catholic Cathedral Church of Kidanemehret for the last 50 years and we thank God together with you. We are delighted to be part of this celebration of the 50 years service of the Catholic Church of Kidanemehret to the salvation of souls and conversion of sinners. Many have received the light of faith and received sacraments and Our Lady served her children as a mother. The church served as refuge for many who suffered personal or communitarian challenges.

It is a joy and privilege for me as Archbishop of Addis Ababa and Chairman of the Catholic Hierarchs of Ethiopia and President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Ethiopia (CBCE) to be part of this celebration to mark the 50th Anniversary of the solemn dedication of this magnificent Cathedral of Kidanemehret which witnesses the presence of God in the midst of the city of Asmara and the people. I bring you the congratulations and best wishes of the Catholics of Addis Ababa and of Ethiopia who hold the people and the country in our hearts with great affection, esteem and solidarity. The Catholic Church in Eritrea and Ethiopia have been walking together in witnessing the love of God to his people and will continue to walk as we are one Church. We have shared together the pains, the joys, and the anxieties of our people and through this we have continued to witness the love of God and that God never abandons his people. God has opened a new future for us and we will pray that this future which is opened for the fraternal solidarity between the Catholic Church in Ethiopia and Eritrea is sustainable and long-lasting.

We are grateful to God for his graces bestowed upon us and upon all those who have dedicated their lives to the Catholic Church in Archeparchy of Asmara and we remember all those who have labored for the mission of the Church and are now in heaven.

May God bless the People of Eritrea and Ethiopia and may our Mother Kidanemehret keep us safe from every evil through her intercession.

ዚቅ ናይ በዓል ሕንጸታ ንቤተክርስትያን፡ “ሰላም በልዋ፣ ተሳለምዋ፣ ንጽዮን ክበብዋን ሕቖፍዋን፡ ኣብ ኃይላ ልብኹም ኣንብሩ ብስሙ ዝተሓንጸት ብደሙ ዝተቀደሰት፣ ብዕንጸይቲ መስቀሉ ዝተዓትበትን፣ ኃይሊ እግዚአብሔር ኣብኣ እዩ ዘሎ እሞ ናብኣ ተጎዓዙ” ብምባል ንቤተክርስትያንን ንኖና ኪዳነ ምሕረትን ብዘስምዕ መዝሙር ሕይወትና ከነሓድስ ይዕድመና።

ግበሩ በዓለ በትፍስሕት

ክቡራን ካህናት፣ ፍቁራት ኣብ ኣፍሪቃን ኤውሮጳን ኣመሪካን ማእከላይ ምብራቕን ኣውስትራልያን ኒዩ ዘላንድን እትርከቡ ካቶሊካውያን ምእመናን።

ኣቐዲመ ኣብ ዘሎኩም ኣሊኹም ምስ ቅዱስ ጳውሎስ ኮይነ፣ “ካብ እግዚኣብሔር ኣቦናን ካብ ጐይታና ኢየሱስ ክርስቶስን ጸጋን ሰላምን ንኣኻትኩም ይኹን” (ሮማ 1:2) ብምባል ልባዊ ሰላምታይ ኣቕርበልኩም። ብምቕጻል ከኣ ብዕለት 24 የካቲት 2020 ዓመታዊ ክብረ በዓል ኣዴና ኪዳነ ምሕረትን ወርቃዊ ሕንጻ ቤተክርስትያን ርእሰ አድባራት ኪዳነ ምሕረት ኣሥመራን ነብዕል ስለዘሎና ዝኸኣለ ብግንባር ዘይከኣለ ከኣ ብመንፈስ ምሳና ኃቢርኩም ንእግዚአብሔር ከተመስግኑ ንኣዴና ኪዳነ ምሕረት ክትውድሱ ብስም መላእ ርእሰ-ኤጳርቅና ኣሥመራ ንዕድመኩም።

ስራሕ ጽገና ሕንጻ ቤተክርስትያን ርእሰ አድባራት ብናይ ኩልና ጸሎትን ምትሕብባርን እዩ ክፍጸም ተኻኢሉ። ኣብ ወጻኢ ዘሎኹም ብዝከኣለኩም ተሓባቢርኩም ኢኹም። እቶም ዘይፈለጥኩም ወይ ዘይከኣልኩም እውን ከምቲ ኣብ ጊዜ ቅዳሴ እንብሎ፡ “ብዙኅ ኮነ ውሑድ፡ ኅቡእ ኮነ ግሁድ መባእ ዘምጽኡን፡ ነቶም ኪህቡ ዚደልዩ ግን ዚወሃብ ዘይብሎምን፡ ሀረርታኦም ቅቡል ኪኸውን ንተኃዝ ኩሉ እግዚአብሔር ኣቦ ጐይታና ኢየሱስ ክርስቶስ ንለምን” ዝብል ጸሎት ከምእነዕርግ ነረጋግጸልኩም።

His Holiness Pope Francis was pleased to learn of the celebrations marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Cathedral of Asmara, to be held on 24 February 2020, and he sends cordial greetings to you and to all the priests, religious and lay faithful of the Archeparchy on this important occasion. As the faithful reflect on the legacy of faith, worship and Christian witness symbolized by the Cathedral, His Holiness encourages them to renew their commitment to be “like living stones … built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (1 Pet 2-5), spreading the Good News, “not only with words, but above all by lives transfigured by God’s presence” (Evangeli Gaudium, 259). With these sentiments, the holy Father gladly impart his Apostolic Blessing as a pledge of joy and peace in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Eritrean Church protests handling of Cardinal Berhaneyesus

The Eritrean Catholic Church has sought an explanation from the National Office for Religious Affairs on the Government’s refusal to allow Ethiopian Cardinal Berhaneyesus and his delegation entry into the country on 22 February 2020.

Ethiopia’s Archbishop of Addis Ababa, Cardinal Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel, in the company of Abune Mussiè Ghebreghiorghis Uqbu, the Bishop of Emdeber Eparchy (Guraghe) and Abba Teshome Fikre Weldetensaè, the General Secretary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ethiopia were on 22 February left stranded at the airport of Asmara when authorities refused them entry into the city.
In a letter signed by Abba Tesfaghiorghis Kiflom, the General Secretary of the Eritrean Bishops Conference, the Church is now seeking answers from the Eritrean Government.

Eritrean Church’s deep regret
“On 22 February 2020, on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee and Patronal feast of the Cathedral Church of Kidanemhret, the Seat of the Metropolitan Archbishop, in Asmara, our illustrious (Ethiopian) guests -His Eminence Cardinal Berhaneyesus Demerew Suraphiel, His Excellence Abune Mussiè Ghebreghiorghis Uqbu, Bishop of Emdeber (Guraghe), and the (Very) Reverend Abba Teshome Fikre Weldetensaè, General Secretary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Ethiopia - upon arrival at the airport of Asmara for the celebrations mentioned above, were denied permission to enter our capital city. We, hereby, wish to express our deep regret for this most unfortunate incident, whose reasons we have, so far, no means of comprehending,” reads the letter made available to Vatican News.

In an earlier statement, Abba Teshome Fikre Weldetensaè, Ethiopia’s General Secretary, explained their ordeal in Asmara.
“After arriving at the National Airport of Asmara, the delegation went through all the requirements and confirmed with the issuance (of an) On Arrival Visa for one month,” explained Abba Teshome.

Before they could exit, airport security officials informed them that ‘higher authorities’ had forbidden entry into Eritrea.

Cardinal and delegation stayed the night at the airport
The Eritrean Church says it is dismayed that the Cardinal and his delegation were made to spend the night at the airport of Asmara.
“Now we are coming to you with the present letter to state that we still remain in the dark as to the reasons of the facts that have sadly occurred on 22 February at the International Airport of Asmara. At the same time, we reiterate that the eminent ecclesiastical personalities involved were our most distinguished guests, we would like to state our considerable reservation on the whole regretful subject. As we have come to understand, our Ethiopian guests had received the entry permit stamped in their passports, valid for one month. This notwithstanding (and) most disconcerting for us, as Eritreans, they were made to wait at the airport of Asmara from Saturday, 22 February, 5.15 pm to Sunday 23 February 2020, 12.00 noon, to eventually return home right from the airport,” reads Abba Tesfaghiorghis’ letter.

Cardinal Berhaneyesus asks the faithful to pray for both countries
For his part, Cardinal Berhaneyesus is said to have narrated his experience to the Catholic faithful at Kebenna Kidanemehret Parish Church in Addis Ababa. He asked parishioners to pray “for both of our Churches and the two sister-countries.”

Church-State relations at an all-time low
Although the Catholic Church is one of four Churches officially recognised by the Eritrean Government, relations between the State and Churches are at an all-time low.

Last year, saw the Eritrean Government unilaterally seize seven schools belonging to Catholics, Muslims, and the Lutheran Church. The Government also confiscated all Catholic health facilities and in some cases including convents situated on hospital grounds.
