Ambassador Donald Yamamato, saw Ethiopia as a "democratic deficit" example. He viewed Meles Zenawi as shrewd & begging to get world attention, to have his ideologies acceptable. #Wikileaks
The US described him as a ticking time bomb ready to explode and a one-dimensional African strongman, who didn't like people getting in his way. George W. Bush labelled him an errand boy! Angela Merkel, viewed him as an economic illiterate!

By the way, does anybody really know that Degnet is a priest or churchman? I think you guys are abusing the true professionalism of priests as we know them back home.

Re: How world leaders viewed Meles, taken from Wikileaks.
All those who spoke about Meles , which I read here, are right in understanding the late prime minister. But the US understanding of him is more to the point. Yes, Meles had been a one dimensional leader who dislikes immensely those who get in his way. Yes, he is attention seeker as the former US ambassador to Ethiopia stated. But more than that he is a person who was consumed with revenge. Remeber to silence the opposition within TPLF in 1993, he made an alliance with the TPLF molded Amhara politicians. Yes, that very time was the begining of the political downfall of Berket Simon. He compounded his problem by going to the TPLF capital to ridcule Abiy. He did not understand the magnitude of the change impulse that brought Abiy to power.
