This is excellent news. Never mind the new industry and jobs created or all the improvements it will contribute to in all other areas, just the money we won't be spending on renting out foreign satellites alone is very helpful. Hopefully they get right on building the next one soon.

Among the reasons I already listed, it's very helpful to find out who is doing what over in Axum and Planet Hotel. Which is a big deal for you.

It is a big deal because there is birth before growth and maturity.

It is a big deal because the point is not to build machine but to use it to access information that are vital to life.

it is a big deal because Ethiopia has 100s and 100s of physics student who can now hope to do somethnig with knowledge and technical skills.

it is a big deal because there what is called imitation, reverse engineering, learning, and transfer.

it is a big deal because every little good thing that happens to this glorious nation is something to celebrate !!!

Death to tribal ignorance !!! Long live knowledge !!!

opmerc,

Maybe! Have you done cost benefit analysis? Sometimes it is better to rent?

After METEC dazzled us with all those grand projects that included drones, planes, military vehicles; electric trains etc. where non of them were productive, I have learned to be very skeptical of complex things.

I hope this satellite thing works for a change! As some serious people are involved with it. Let us not forget, that scientists aren't necessarily business people.

The fact that this thing was probably initiated by the same people that started METEC's grand ideas? Who can't even use the buses, tractors they already built?

Sorry Horus! For being a little pessimistic; at least the whole thing is going to be a valuable educational experience for the country.

[[..Satellites are expensive. In addition to the cost of building one of these devices, there is also the cost of launching the satellite into space. Satellites are costly even when they are successfully launched, but all too often, launches end in failure. In 2017, the billion-dollar spy satellite, Zuma, was lost when the rocket carrying it failed to reach orbit height. Satellite costs may rise as satellite technologies grow more complex to handle different purposes.

Signal Reception can be Spotty
Another problem with satellites is their somewhat unreliable signal. There are different factors that affect the strength and reception of a satellite signal. Errors might be made by the satellite or anyone working on it. This can cause a variable level of interference to the signal. There are also circumstances, such as weather or sunspots which may be impossible to alter, that affect the satellite's signal. All these things can cause interference and make proper operation of the satellite very difficult........

There are No Repair Shops in Space
Satellites used to be impossible to maintain or repair in any way. Only with the successful repair of the Hubble Telescope did that change, when NASA astronauts used the space shuttle to rendezvous with the telescope and repair some faulty equipment. However, it is still extremely difficult to repair a satellite. NASA is designing robots whose sole purpose would be to repair satellites. The operation is being handled by a department at NASA called the Satellite Servicing Development Office.]]

Dawi,

You have every right to be a pessimist because that is simply where you are emotionally on things Ethiopian. The facts on the ground are not influenced by our emotional states here on ER.

Any project that has to do with science and physics is nothing but a positive inspiration to our zillions of youth who are growing up in an open networked and knowledge driven transactional environment .

This is great news. I compare it to the early years of Ethiopian Airlines. At that time establishing an African Airline may seem very weird and unnecessary prestigious project but the long term dividends prove the opposite. We are witnessing how those African countries, even the likes of Nigeria, that started very late are struggling to establish an Airline and are failing.

This is only the start and it will bring with it a very wide range of benefit in the future in the area of education, telecommunications, media, information technology, transportation and many other sectors.

If the investment required to build or own something outweighs renting, you're right, it's better to rent. In this case it most certainly is worth it. The reason our economy can't go as fast as it needs to is due to shortage of foreign currency. Any area you can limit existing services that require a running expense of foreign currency, that's a step in the right direction. The cost to own this satellite is fixed but also deferred for 30 years without interest.

There's also the unlimited access we get to the device, not having to queue behind other customers waiting for US satellite time. All areas we would otherwise ignore collecting data for to conserve spending can now benefit from having this unlimited access. Increased utilization of accurate data across multiple area saves us billions long term.

There is also the obvious benefit of the newly acquired know-how in building and running such systems. Applying that to other satellites we build ourselves only increases these savings but starts whole new primary and secondary industries which provide a whole new path for many hopeful youth.

The rest of the issues you listed from that article are general issues applicable to all satellites, not really about ownership. There will still be some running risks and costs for some time, like having to pay to launch the future devices and what to do if satellites fail in space, but that capacity becomes the next area of focus once we've built and managed a fleet of these.

opmerc,

Great argument! I am convinced!

Cheers!
