NOVEMBER, IN ERITREA'S HISTORY

In Nov 1974, the EPLF agreed to train TNO (Tigrai National Organization, “MAGEBT” ማሕበር ገስገስቲ ብሄር ትግራይ) recruits and provide armaments as well as ammunitions for the future front, the TPLF.

EPLF fighter Mahari Tekle (Mussie) met 2 TNO reps, Seyoum & Aregawi, on the outskirts of Asmara. As EPLF consented to Mussie’s request to join the nascent Tigrai mov't, he informed TNO members of his intention to pursue the cause of self-determination in Tigrai.

The 1st group arrived in Asmara, in January 1975. Among these future tegadelti (fighters) were Abbay Tsehaye, Hailu Mengesha, Sahle Abraha (Seye), Atsbaha Dagnew (Shewit), Yohannes Gebre-Medhin (Walta), Tikue Woldu (Awealom) and Legesse (Meles) Zenawi, the late prime minister.

After few days in Asmara under the guidance of the veteran fighter Mussie, the group left Asmara at night and two days later arrived at the nearest EPLF training camp, Riesi Adi where they immediately started rigorous military training.

TNO's organizers made Mussie a member of TPLF's founding leadership, which led the organization until a fighters’ congress was held. On 18 February 1975, the leadership and some recruits went to Dedebit from Eritrea and launched the TPLF-led armed struggle.

Dear Zmeselo,
That is just the tip of the iceberg. When everything is said and done, our Ethiopian brothers and sisters have some serious soul searching they need to do if bygones are going to remain bygones. But, first things first. We need to assist the current Ethiopian government control the rather unenviable situation the country is right now.

You're right, brother. And I'm sure, that's being done. I just notice so much ignorance, willfull or otherwise, about our history in this forum. The truth must finally be said, & I don't think retelling it will create any friction. Deep inside too, majority of Ethiopians don't know about the details, but will feel deeply sorry when they are made aware.
