Asmara, 11 November 2019- The first phase of the construction of the Adi-Guadad-Akordet, two-lane, 134 km new asphalt road was launched at a ceremony held today, 11 November in Habela.

From August 20th – 23rd, Mr. Zhou Wei, the Chief Engineer, led an inspection team made the check upon delivery of the first batch of equipment, such as bulldozers, loaders and road rollers for the Eritrean Highway Project.

The first phase of the construction of the new road by Chinese Company ‘SFECO’ is expected to be accomplished within two years and will cover 30 km from Habela to Cheatat.

At the launching ceremony in which Mr. Hagos Gebrehiwet, head of the PFDJ Economic Affairs took part, Mr. Abraha Asfeha, Minister of Public Works, indicating that the old road connecting Asmara with Gash Barka region passing through keren was very narrow and with rolling mountainous topography that limits the driving speed and open to high risk. Mr. Abraha went on to say that the new road will be of high standard and it will shorten the existing Asmara-Akordet road by 20 km and that will have strategic economic importance.

On August 28th, the test explosion of the Eritrean Highway project undertaken by SFECO was successfully completed. As the first phase of the project, the highway is about 30 kilometers long and designed as a two-way two-lane road.

Mr. Yang Zigang, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Eritrea indicating that since the establishment of diplomatic relation in 1993, Eritrea and China cooperation has been strengthened continuously, said that the ‘SFECO’ Construction Company has vast experience and capacity to construct the road and is expected the Eritrean nationals that join the program will gain substantial experience.

This mountainous segment will be constructed on the basis of Chinese Government concessional loan.

On September 14th, the first shipment of equipment and materials for the Eritrean Highway project undertaken by SFECO sailed from Port Nangang, Shanghai. It arrived at the port of Massawa starting mid-October.

The new road (shown on the map) will link AdiGwadad w/ Akordat; the central highland with the western lowland; descending from the sky to a land-field, gliding through mountains. This is as big deal & STRATEGIC, as the Asmara-Massawa rd.

The Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO); and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) marked double international events; World Food Day and International Day for the Eradication of Poverty in Embaderho Town on October 16, 2019.

Mr. Arefaine Berhe, the Minister of Agriculture and keynote speaker of the events, outlined important facts about what Eritrea is doing to meet food and nutrition security as well as to eradicate hunger and poverty.

He mentioned the Minimum Integrated Household Agricultural Package (MIHAP) as a practical intervention to meet food and nutrition security at household level. He further noted that the Ministry came up with a new and viable Small and Medium Commercial Farmers Strategy (SMCFS) to upscale MIHAP beneficiaries and promote the already established commercial farmers.

Ms. Susan Ngongi, UN Resident Coordinator in Eritrea, on her part noted that 1.3 billion people in 101 countries are living under poverty line. She also explained that since over half of them are under 18 years of age, the issue needs paramount attention. Ms. Susan, at the end, underscored that persistent effort is being made to ensure food security as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Dr. Saeed A. Bancie, FAO Representative in Eritrea, on his part called on farmers to concentrate in producing quality products vis-a-vis the effort being made to eradicate poverty and ensure nutrition security.

Mr. Habteweld Misgina, an Artist and Environmental activist presented a live painting reflecting the events and inspired participants with his wonderful approach.

Exemplary farmers who displayed their products in the event, were awarded certificates of participation.

It is to be noted that this year’s World Food Day was marked under the theme:
Our Actions are Our Future: Healthy Diets for a Zero Hunger World
and the International day for the Eradication of Poverty was globally observed under the theme:
Acting together to empower children, their families and communities to end poverty.
The event was attended by senior Government and PFDJ officials, members of the Diplomatic Corps, Heads of UN Missions in Eritrea, religious leaders, experts, representatives of farmers and other invited guests.

In other related news from the Ministry, the Agricultural Extension Department of the Ministry of Agriculture conducted one-week training from 28th October to 1st November, 2019 to heads of plant protection in the Sub-zones of Northern Red sea region.

The training was officially opened by Mr. Tesfit Gebregziabhier, Head of Crop Development Division in the region. Mr. Tesfit, after underscoring the relevance of the training, stated that many parts of the region were initially infested with FAW. “However” he continued,
thanks to collaboration of the people, administration officials and the military, the threat of the dangerous pest was overcome.
He further urged participants of the training to continue their vigilancez because the FAW threat can never be totally eliminated.

Mr. Tedros Sium, Head of Migratory Pests Control unit, on his part briefed the trainees on FAW situation starting from the preparations made prior to FAW appearance in Eritrea. He underscored the commitment of various government bodies, in promoting awareness of the people about FAW and implementation of the desirable measures and decisions on time.

This year, no significant FAW infestation has been reported yet. Reports from the 1500 pheromone traps distributed throughout the country indicate, that the FAW incidences are dramatically decreasing below threshold level. The training focused on FAW background, FAW biology, scouting and monitoring, application of the FAMEWS (Fall Armyworm Monitoring and Early Warning System), GIS application on FAW actual and on-time reporting.

Moreover, a presentation on collection and processing of good practices was delivered to the trainees. The presentation was aided by video shows to inspire the trainees and gain practical experience from Eritrean farmers, who are using natural ways of controlling pests. The trainers called the experts to find, observe and promote natural and environment friendly ways of FAW control. The trainees on their part urged the Ministry to continue FAW sensitization activities, up to ground level for FAW is still a global threat.

The training included both theoretical and practical sessions; and was delivered by Mr. Tedros Sium, Migratory Pests Control Unit head; Mr. Ermias Solomon, Information and Communication Unit Head; Mr. Efrem Ogbazghi, FAW Master trainer and Plant Protection Expert in Gash-barka region; Ms. Selam Teclay, Migratory Pests Information officer; and Mr. Ogbaldet Negede, GIS Master trainer.

when i see Eritrea i feel like i am seeing some primitive photo even the resent one.. what the fk the women doing building road by hand is this people know we r in 2020?

it is sad.. now the Chinese come and this idiot building road road instead of building road that connect them to Ethiopia from port... this idiot build road to no where ... next my problem with road is u have to make the road out of cement for the weather u guys have if u make your road out of asphalt in just two year u have to repair it again and again cement would have last u 60 years (official 25 years but i see cement road that last 60 years )... the sad part is you dont have cement no problem u buy from Golden because u dont have asphalt too. so if u buy cement from Golden and make them pay against the port fee the golden would be happy to supply u with cement .. all u have to do is open your massawa and u get free cement to build all the road u want and your women who every left in Eritrea would have got job .. once the road is done the cement used to build housing .... it would have been win win otherwise u would be bankrupt every time you build road with asphalt... it is hard to recover the investment on road because it is government sponsored road the public use it for free in America the road built by government because the government took the money first by collecting tax. but in Eritrea who pay tax...may be use the 2% tax. but still it would be waste of money u better make deal with golden holding your noise..
