Ethiopia's peacemaking prime minister emerges as a Nobel favorite

The deal with Eritrea won Abiy international plaudits. He is the bookmakers’ second favorite to win a Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, after climate activist Greta Thunberg.

Some observers say Abiy, a former military officer specializing in cyber intelligence, will sometimes bypass ministries because his reforms must maintain their breakneck momentum or become mired in bureaucracy.

“Abiy seems to have relied on his charismatic rule,” said Dereje Feyissa, a professor at Addis Ababa University. “The question is whether this is sustainable. Euphoria is subsiding.”

Other observers say Abiy’s rapid changes are a deliberate attempt to wrong-foot opponents from the previous administration, which was dominated by Tigrayans, a small ethnic group.

Abiy, 43, is from the Oromo group, the nation’s largest, which spearheaded the protests that forced his predecessor to resign. Since taking office in April 2018, Abiy’s government has arrested or fired many senior officials - mainly Tigrayans - for corruption or rights abuses.

“In the first six or seven months, he undercut the institutions ... The institutions were either not working or working against his agenda,” said Jawar Mohammed, an Oromo activist and informal adviser to the prime minister.

"Foreign governments and organizations awarded Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for ensuring peace in the country. He won the 2019 edition of the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize. He was also awarded by Saudi Arabia in a ceremony King Salman bin Abdul Aziz of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia hosted. Have these people really bestowing us the awards based on the real situation in our country. I don’t have any objection for the Premier. I personally read lots of innocence approaches on him and his activities if he is considered as an individual. I will be happy if they even give him more awards.." Abiy can dream but will never happen. however lets assume it happned, then the only justification will then be that they must have mistaken him for Amahara becouse of his name other wise galla noooooooooooooooo!

i will ask you one thing why do galas take an amharic name when they want to look civilised. The animal gala presedent hsi first name is shimeles deep down his mother whised he was not born from a gala so she gave him the amharic name to sooth her pain of havein this bull like galla

TPLF is very unhappy that PM Abiy could be the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. They are now campaigning against the consideration. Here is what they have in their website...

"It's with total astonishment and dismay that we just learned from Reuters that "Ethiopia's peacemaking prime minister emerges as a Nobel favorite".

"This makes us wonder has the definition of peace changed lately or is someone making a mockery of what peace is all about. Worse, is the life of Africans valued less that the yardstick for a candidate from the "dark continent" has been curtailed?"

"Giving the Nobel Peace Prize to Abiy Ahmed for destroying Ethiopia is encouraging dictators and will desecrate the the Noble Peace Prize institute."

“In the first six or seven months, he undercut the institutions ... The institutions were either not working or working against his agenda,” said Jawar Mohammed, an Oromo activist.

The original article has been corrected to restate Jawar' as only Oromo activist. The statement that identifies Jawar M as "The informal adviser to the prime minister " has been cut out. It could be that Jawar complained about his diminished status, as he likes to consider himself as the Leader of the parallel government.

Finally the verdict is out ! PM Abiy is the winner of the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize. We all should applaud the PM for being the first Ethiopian to receive such a prize. The Prize comes with responsibility and great expectations. I am hopeful that the PM will live up to his own words, the expectations of peace loving Ethiopians and the international community which bestowed such a recognition up on him for his efforts.

"Peace does not arise from the actions of one party alone. When Prime Minister Abiy reached out his hand, President Afwerki grasped it, and helped to formalise the peace process between the two countries. The Norwegian Nobel Committee hopes the peace agreement will help to bring about positive change for the entire populations of Ethiopia and Eritrea.

In Ethiopia, even if much work remains, Abiy Ahmed has initiated important reforms that give many citizens hope for a better life and a brighter future. He spent his first 100 days as Prime Minister lifting the country’s state of emergency, granting amnesty to thousands of political prisoners, discontinuing media censorship, legalizing outlawed opposition groups, dismissing military and civilian leaders who were suspected of corruption, and significantly increasing the influence of women in Ethiopian political and community life. He has also pledged to strengthen democracy by holding free and fair elections."

World leaders praise Abiy Ahmed
The 2019 Nobel peace Prize laureate is receiving praise from leaders around the world.

Antonio Guterres, the UN General Secretary, said his leadership has set a "wonderful example" for the international community.

Congratulations to Prime Minister @AbiyAhmedAli of Ethiopia for being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

His vision helped Ethiopia and Eritrea achieve a historic rapprochement & his leadership has set a wonderful example for others in & beyond Africa.https://t.co/0vEDfhhZP5 https://t.co/URrrE0Nfiv

Raila Odinga, the former Kenyan prime minister, said the prize is "an honour to our Continent which has long been held back by wars."

It is a recognition that the politics of diplomacy and engagement instead of confrontation is the way to the future.

Amnesty International were less effusive in their praise for Abiy, saying the award should "motivate him to tackle the outstanding human rights challenges" in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has received the Nobel Peace Prize. This award should push & motivate him to tackle the outstanding human rights challenges that threaten to reverse the gains made so far.
