Is it natural?
Tied to geography where the society is located? is it island, gulf, inland..etc
This is mixed. Among the gretest empires in history some are island, inland and or gulf originated or based. Some are highlands others are lowlands.

Is it Economic base?
Agriculture, fishing, nomadic, trading...?
This is also mixed.

Is it related to gene?
White, Black, Yellow,Caucasian, Indo European, Indo Asian...etc
This is also mixed. The Saskinds had mix more agriculture, Axum had mix more nomadic (Small portion being totally nomadic the rest seasonal)..

From all the studies done, what has been ascertained is one thing. Any society that looks for help when main opponent is down to push further has never been great. The Swiss were asked what would have they done if all three of their roots, German, Roman and Frank had gone down further during war and after. Most people said they would have helped them all three to again rise up.

Mean while the Ukrainians said they would finish off Russia to never get up again, if they get the opportunity with US or UK help since the Germans would never want Russia to be down and out.

Scandinavians, Baltics, Western Europeans were interviewed and the most common theme found was to what extent do you go/of course wish in many cases since some these societies have never been great at any level at anything in the past.
