U.S. envoy: welcomed the role of the military council in achieving stability in Sudan

The deputy leader of Sudan’s ruling military council, Lt. Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Daqlo, met in Khartoum on Sunday with US charge d’affaires Steven Koutsis, Anadolu Agency reports.

During the meeting, Daqlo briefed the US envoy on developments in Sudan and the reasons behind the formation of the transitional military council, the council said in a statement.

He also posted Koutsis on “steps taken by the military council to preserve the security and stability of Sudan”, the statement said.

The U.S. envoy, for his part, welcomed the role of the military council in achieving stability and underlined the importance of continued cooperation between the two sides to enhance Sudanese-U.S. relations, according to the statement.

On Thursday, the Sudanese army ousted longtime President Omar al-Bashir, who ruled Sudan since 1989, following months of popular protests against his rule.

The army also established a military council to run the country for a transitional period of two years.

On Saturday, Lt. Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan Abdulrahman, the head of the military council, pledged large-scale political and economic reforms.

In a televised speech, Burhan said the country’s two-year transitional period will end with free and fair elections and vowed to put on trial those involved in the killing of the protesters as well as corruption under the old regime.

“The Kingdom declares its support for the steps announced by the Council in preserving the lives and property, and stands by the Sudanese people, and hopes that this will achieve security and stability for brotherly Sudan,” the SPA said late Saturday.

It added that Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz issued directives for the providing of a package of humanitarian aid, including petroleum products, wheat and medicines to Sudan.

On Thursday, the Sudanese military deposed Omar al-Bashir, who has ruled Sudan since 1989, following months of popular protests against his rule.

The man who headed Sudan’s military coup has stepped down one day after ousting long term leader Omar Al-Bashir.

Sudan’s Defence Minister Awad Ibn Auf said yesterday that he is stepping down as head of the country’s transitional military council.

Ibn Ouf said: “I, the head of the military council, announce I am giving up the post,” explaining he took the decision to preserve the unity of the armed forces.

Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan will be the new head of the transitional military council, Ibn Auf said in a speech broadcast on state television.

Thousands of jubilant protesters celebrated in the streets after Ibn Auf made the announcement.

This may not be enough to satisfy pro-democracy campaigners who have called for civilian government and widespread reforms but is being taken as a positive sign.

Ibn Auf was a controversial figure, blacklisted by Washington for his role as the army’s head of military intelligence and security during the Darfur conflict. He has been defence minister since 2015 and was promoted in February by Bashir to the role of first vice-president.
