Amhara Association of America condemns in the strongest terms the recent illegal incursion by Sudanese security forces and militias into Metema and surrounding areas in “Amhara Region”, Ethiopia resulting in the deaths of several Amhara farmers who fought against the incursion.

Last week, Sudanese security forces and militias entered Metema and attempted to occupy Ethiopian territory. Amhara farmers, who have historically defended their lands from Sudanese invasion, again proudly and bravely answered the call for self-defense and stopped the Sudanese forces and militias from occupying their land. As a result of this armed conflict, many brave Amhara fighters were killed and dozens were wounded.

Amhara Association of America has received information from the ground on July 9th and 10th, 2018 there were additional incursions by Sudanese forces and heavy gun fire was reported.

Amhara Association of America calls on the Sudanese Government to stop its forces from violating Ethiopian sovereignty, investigate the illegal invasion by Sudanese forces into Metema and surrounding areas, and hold the military commanders and soldiers accountable.

Amhara Association of America will directly be contacting the Sudanese Embassy in Washington D.C. directly to discuss this pressing issue to avoid further escalation.

Amhara Association of America calls on Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed and Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) to secure the sovereignty of Ethiopia and protect its citizens. There is no justification for the Ethiopian Government not to secure a critical border and protect its citizens from foreign aggressors. To date there are no ENDF or non-state organized forces in Metema supporting the Amhara farmers. Amhara Association of America supports Prime Minister Abiy’s vision of a democratic and united Ethiopia “Ethiopiawinet” at peace with all its neighbors. However, this vision cannot be realized if the Ethiopian Government cannot perform its basic duty of protecting its citizens and securing its borders from foreign forces.

Amhara Association of America calls on Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed and President Gedu Andargachew of the “Amhara Region” to investigate the cause of this illegal incursion, any involvement by Ethiopian entities, and hold those responsible accountable.

Amhara Association of America calls on Prime Minister Abiy and President Gedu Andargachew to compensate the families whose loved once have died or have been wounded as a result of defending the sovereignty and integrity of Ethiopia.

Amhara Association of America calls on the United Nations and all international bodies to condemn the action of the Sudanese Government that has resulted in the deaths of innocent civilians. The situation in Metema and surrounding border areas is tenuous that can escalate if proper action is not taken by the Sudanese and Ethiopian Government and concerned world bodies to deescalate the fighting.

Amhara Association of America calls on all Amharas and Ethiopians to support the brave farmers who are defending their families, land, and the sovereignty of Ethiopia during this difficult and transitional time for Ethiopia.

Amhara Association of America affirms its support and stands proudly with our brave farmers as they continue to safeguard the territorial integrity and dignity of Ethiopia as our forefathers have done for millennia.
