Ukraine’s intelligence units make landing in Crimea, special operation continues

The units of the Main Intelligence Directorate at the Ukrainian Defense Ministry have made a landing within the temporarily occupied Crimea. The operation was conducted in cooperation with the Ukrainian Navy.
The relevant statement was made by Andrii Yusov, the representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate at the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, in a commentary to Suspilne, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“As part of the special operation, the personnel have made a landing within the peninsula,” Yusov told.
In his words, the operation was conducted in cooperation with the Naval Forces. The objectives were achieved, and no personnel losses were reported.
“The special operation continues, we are not disclosing all the details,” Yusov explained.
According to him, the enemy suffered personnel and equipment losses. The final figures are yet to be checked.
Meanwhile, the Krym.Realii [Crimea.Realities] Telegram channel reported on some explosions that had occurred near the village of Maiak at Cape Tarkhankut in the temporarily occupied Crimea. A battle involving aircraft took place there.
“Around 05:00 a.m., loud blasts were heard near Maiak at Cape Tarkhankut, as the local sources told us. In addition, our sources among the Ukrainian intelligence confirmed that a battle involving vessels and aircraft had taken place there,” the report states.
A reminder that a base of the 3rd radiotechnical regiment of Russia’s aerospace forces is located in the temporarily occupied Crimea’s Maiak. The Nebo-M and Kasta-2E2 radar systems are deployed on the Tarkhankut Peninsula.

Ukrainian intelligence has confirmed that a Russian large landing ship and submarine were hit by missile strikes in temporarily occupied Sevastopol.
Andrii Yusov, a representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, said this on the Freedom television channel, Ukrinform reports.
"Today, Ukrainians and many good people around the world watched the photos from Sevastopol with pleasure. Planned work to demilitarize the Russian occupiers and liberate the Ukrainian peninsula is ongoing. Yes, we can confirm: minus one large landing ship and minus one submarine," Yusov said.
He added that "more will follow."
Ukrinform reported earlier that several powerful explosions rang out in temporarily occupied Sevastopol early on Wednesday, September 13. Russia's Defense Ministry reported a cruise missile attack on the Ordzhonikidze shipyard in temporarily occupied Sevastopol, which damaged two warships.
According to OSINTtechnical analysts, a large Ropucha-class large landing ship and a Kilo-class submarine were damaged in the attack.

Ukraine claims Russian Black Sea Fleet's commander killed in Sevastopol attack

Ukraine has claimed that the commander of Russia's Black Sea Feet, Admiral Viktor Sokolov, has been killed in the Ukrainian attack in Sevastopol on Friday.
"After the hit of the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, 34 officers were killed, including the commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet," the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces said in an update Monday, adding that more than 100 other Russian servicemen were wounded.
Sevastopol, home to Russia’s Black Sea Fleet headquarters, is one of the largest cities on the Crimean peninsula and was illegally annexed by Moscow’s forces in 2014.
CNN cannot independently confirm Ukraine's claims about Solokov or the number of casualties.
CNN has reached out to the Russian Ministry of Defense for comment.
Moscow has said that one serviceman is missing as a result of Ukraine's attack on Sevastopol.

Satellite captures aftermath of AFU strike on military facility in Dzhankoy11.06.2024 07:01
The Planet Labs satellite recorded the result of a missile strike by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on a Russian military facility in Dzhankoy in the temporarily occupied Crimea on the night of 10 June.
This was reported by Ukrinform with reference to the Schemes project of Radio Liberty.
The images, which were obtained by the journalists of the publication, show the consequences of a large-scale fire near the railway in Dzhankoy.

"Currently, the quality of the satellite images does not allow us to accurately identify the type of equipment affected. However, it can be seen that the object appeared here in May 2024, and later fortifications were also built nearby," the statement said.
As reported, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on the night of 10 June, the Ukrainian Defence Forces successfully attacked a Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile division near Dzhankoy, as well as two enemy S-300 anti-aircraft missile divisions near Chornomorsk and Yevpatoriya.

Russia's Kursk region authorities say Ukrainian forces control 28 settlements

During a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the acting governor of Russia’s Kursk region, Aleksey Smirnov, said the Armed Forces of Ukraine currently control 28 settlements in the region.
According to Ukrinform, this was reported by Current Time.
Smirnov said that the Ukrainian forces had advanced 12 kilometers into the Kursk region across a 40-kilometer front.
At this point, Putin interrupted him, saying that the width and depth of the Ukrainian military's advancement would be reported by the Russian military, and suggested that the acting Kursk governor focus on the social and economic situation.
Smirnov said there were about 2,000 people in these 28 settlements, whose fate is unknown to the local Russian authorities. At the same time, 180,000 people in the region are to be evacuated and 121,000 have already left the region.

"In addition, there has been an increase in UAV and missile attacks over this time. 194 missiles and UAVs were launched, 147 were shot down," Smirnov said.
According to the Astra Telegram channel, the Kursk governor at the meeting said that 12 civilians have been killed and 121 others (including 10 children) have been injured as a result of the fighting in the Kursk region.
On August 6, Russia’s Telegram channels started reporting about the fighting in the border area, citing pro-war accounts on social media. It was reported that the Ukrainian military had allegedly entered the territory of the Kursk region.
The Ukrainian military did not make any official statements on this matter.

Defence forces destroy Russian Su-34 in Kursk region

Last night, the Ukrainian Defence Forces destroyed an enemy Su-34 in the Kursk region.
According to Ukrinform, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported this on Facebook.
‘Last night, in the Kursk region (Russia), during a combat mission, the forces and means of the anti-aircraft missile troops of the Air Force of Ukraine destroyed a Russian Su-34 fighter-bomber,’ the statement said.

CNN — A week into Ukraine’s surprise cross-border incursion into Russia, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Moscow does not have the situation under control.
Tens of thousands of Russians have been forced to flee their homes as Ukrainian troops continued to encroach onto Russian territory over the weekend and on Monday.
The incursion – the first time foreign troops entered Russian territory since World War II – is a major embarrassment for the Kremlin. Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to “kick the enemy out” or Russia, but his troops are yet to stop the Ukrainian advance.
Here’s what we know.
What happened?
The first reports of Ukrainian troops crossing into Russia’s Kursk region, just north of the Ukrainian border, started to emerge late last Tuesday. But it wasn’t until several days later that Kyiv officially acknowledged its military was operating inside Russia.
The incursion marked a notable change of tactics from Kyiv. The Ukrainian military has in the past regularly attacked targets inside Russia with drones and missiles, and there have been limited cross-border attacks by Ukraine-aligned Russian saboteurs, but until last week it had not launched any official ground incursions across the border.
By Monday, Kyiv claimed to have control over some 1,000 square kilometers (386 square miles) of Russian territory. In terms of its size, it’s similar to the amount of Ukrainian land Russia managed to seize so far this year, estimated by the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) at 1,175 square kilometers (453 square miles).
Still, the area is dwarfed by the more than 100,000 square kilometers, or 18% of Ukraine’s total territory, taken by Russia since the conflict started in 2014.
Why is Kyiv doing this?
The objective of the incursion remains a mystery.
Kyiv is likely trying to achieve several goals: reclaim the initiative and boost the morale of its soldiers while diverting Russia’s attention and embarrassing Putin.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said over the weekend that the incursion was a way to put “pressure on the aggressor.”
On Monday, he added that it was “only fair” and beneficial to destroy the Russian positions that are used to launch strikes against Ukraine, saying thousands have been launched from the Kursk region since the beginning of June.
“Russia must be forced into peace if Putin wants to continue waging war so badly,” he said.
The Ukrainian government said it didn’t intend to annex Russia’s territory in the same way Moscow has annexed Crimea and other areas seized from Ukraine.
“Unlike Russia, Ukraine does not need (foreign territories). Ukraine is not interested in taking the territory of the Kursk region. But we want to protect our people’s lives,” spokesperson for the foreign ministry Heorhii Tykhyi said on Tuesday.
Ukraine has been under increased pressure along the 600-mile front line as Moscow in recent months, even as the long-awaited US military aid started to arrive to the front.
Moscow’s slow, grinding offensive along the entire frontline has been forcing Ukraine to commit to defensive operations rather than gear up for a counteroffensive.
While Russia’s advances have been mostly incremental, it has recently managed to inch towards several strategically important towns and roads in eastern Ukraine.

Russian advances are areas where Russian forces have operated in or launched attacks, but they do not control them. “Claimed” areas are where sources have said control, incursions or counteroffensives are occurring, but ISW cannot corroborate nor demonstrate them to be false.

How has Putin reacted?
With fury. The scale of the crisis became clear on Monday, when Putin held a tense meeting with top security and government officials and the heads of the border regions, vowing to “kick the enemy out.”
A video of the meeting published by the Kremlin shows Putin scolding his subordinates, at one point shutting down the Kursk region’s acting governor Alexei Smirnov as he attempts to outline the scale of the invasion.
Smirnov was telling Putin that the Ukrainians were some 11 kilometers deep into Russian territory when Putin cut him off saying he can get that information from the military and ordered him to focus on social and economic issues instead.
Putin is not used to having his authority and power challenged and the incursion is the second major humiliation for the president in just over a year, after the Wagner mutiny last June.
While the private mercenary group’s boss Yevgeny Prigozhin ultimately failed and ended up dead after trying to challenge Putin, the episode caused a major crack in the image the president has been cultivating for decades.
What does it mean for Russia?
The magnitude of the crisis cannot be underestimated. For more than a decade, since Russia sparked the conflict in eastern Ukraine and annexed Crimea in 2014, the war Moscow has been waging on Ukraine barely touched the Russian people.
Widespread sanctions imposed by the West on Russia made international travel difficult and foreign goods expensive or innacessible, but the sense of safety from foreign attack has remained more or less intact.
That changed once Ukraine began using drones and missiles to regularly strike deeper inside Russia earlier this year, especially after Kyiv got permission from some of its allies to use their weapons for cross-border strikes. The ground incursion makes it even more apparent.
Moscow has been scrambling to contain the attack. Russian authorities imposed a sweeping counter-terror operation in three border regions – Belgorod, Bryansk and Kursk – but stopped short of declaring the incursion an act of war.
The ISW said this was likely an attempt by the Kremlin to deliberately downplay the assault to prevent domestic panic or backlash over the fact that Russia was unable to defend its own borders.
What are Ukraine’s allies saying?
Putin has lashed out against Ukraine’s allies on Monday, claiming the “the West is fighting us with the hands of the Ukrainians.”
Yet everything seems to suggest that the incursion took by surprise not just Russia, but also some of Ukraine’s closest allies.
The Biden administration said last week it wasn’t made aware of Kyiv’s plans in advance, but it reiterated its support for Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, the White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby said: “Make no mistake about it: This is Putin’s war against Russia. And if he doesn’t like it, if it’s making him a little uncomfortable, then there’s an easy solution: He can just get the hell out of Ukraine and call it a day.”
Similarly, the European Union, Germany, the UK and other Western countries expressed support for Ukraine.
What happens next?
Analysts are not expecting Ukraine to attempt to advance much further into Russian territory. The success of the incursion was largely down to the surprise factor, with Moscow scrambling resources to try to defend its borders.
Once Russian reinforcements are in place, it is unlikely Ukraine would be able to hold onto the territory it managed to seize.
Russia has already relocated some of its troops stationed in occupied southern Ukraine to the Kursk region, according to Ukrainian military officials.
Ukrainian Ground Forces Spokesperson Dmytro Lykhovii told Ukrainian media Tuesday that “some Russian military units” were moved to Kursk from the Pridniprovsky frontline and the Zaporizhzhia region in southern Ukraine. He caveated, however, that Russia had already amassed “a large number of personnel” in the Zaporizhzhia region.
“The number of units they are redeploying is relatively small to talk about any weakening or removal of the barrier to continue the offensive in the southern direction,” Lykhovii told Ukrainian TV outlet EspresoTV.
“We want to avoid the impression that we are already winning and that Kursk is ours. This is not the case at all. We emphasize that every segment and every area is important.”
Ukraine has spent the past few months trying to hold off further Russian advances, first while waiting for the long-delayed deliveries of US weapons and now as it awaits the newly recruited troops to get trained up and arrive to the front lines.
The incursion might have given it the boost it so desperately needed.

Defense forces strike at sea oil terminal in Feodosia at night - General Staff

On the night of October 7, the Ukrainian Defense Forces successfully attacked an offshore oil terminal in the temporarily occupied Feodosia.
According to Ukrinform, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported this on Facebook.
“Last night, a successful strike was made on the enemy's offshore oil terminal in the temporarily occupied Feodosia, Crimea. A fire was detected in the area of the facility. The consequences of the damage are being clarified,” the statement said.
The Feodosia terminal is the largest in Crimea in terms of transshipment of oil products, which were used, in particular, to meet the needs of the Russian army.
The task was carried out by units of the Missile Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in cooperation with other components of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

Measures to undermine the military and economic potential of the Russian Federation continue, the General Staff emphasized.

Zelensky: Today is United Nations Day around the world, not somewhere in Kazan

The goal for which the UN was created is defended not by the UN Security Council and not even by UN officials, but by collaborative formats such as the Crimea Platform.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated this during a video address to the participants of the 3rd Parliamentary Summit of the Crimea Platform, which is taking place today in Riga, as reported by Ukrinform.
"Today, the goal for which the UN was created is defended not by the UN Security Council and not even by UN officials, but by collaborative formats such as the Crimea Platform or the Peace Summit," Zelensky said.
He added, "And I would really like to remind the international bureaucracy and political leaders that today is the UN Day all over the world, not somewhere in Kazan."

Addressing the participants of the parliamentary summit of the Crimea Platform, Zelensky also noted that the number of participants reflects that since 2014, Russia has failed in its main objective — Putin has not succeeded in making international crime a part of the norm for nations.
"It was with the annexation of Crimea that Russia's assault on the system of international law began. However, stealing other people’s land, deporting those who resist, and shattering the lives of an entire nation – in other words, everything that Russia is doing – will never be accepted by the international community. For all states, it is equally valuable to preserve sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the right to determine their future. This is what the UN Charter is based on," Zelensky stressed.
He reminded that the UN Charter is about true peace, not about normalizing war.
Zelensky also briefly presented all five points of the Victory Plan to the participants of the Crimea Platform's parliamentary summit.

As reported, delegations from about 50 countries and six international parliamentary assemblies are attending the 3rd Parliamentary Summit of the Crimea Platform, held today, October 24, in the Latvian capital.
The International Crimea Platform was created in 2021 as a format for coordination and consultations at the level of states and governments, parliaments, foreign ministers, and experts. It was established to raise awareness among world leaders and the public about the temporary occupation and annexation of Crimea by Russia, the negative impact of this act on human rights, security in the Black Sea region, global food security, and a rules-based international order.
The previous two parliamentary summits of the Crimea Platform were held in Zagreb (Croatia) and Prague (Czech Republic). They brought together parliamentarians from various countries and international parliamentary organizations.

Gas keeps burning by Black Sea platforms seized by Russia

Off the western coast of temporarily occupied Crimea and toward Snake Island, gas has been burning from wells for more than two years, and new sources of fire keep emerging.
This is reported by the Center for Journalistic Investigations, referring to data from the Sentinel-2 satellite, Ukrinform reports.
"... next to the Ukrainian drilling rigs and block conductors seized by Russia on the Black Sea shelf, gas leaking from the wells has been burning continuously for more than two years, and new hot cells are also appearing," the post says.
It is noted that as of October 30, plumes of smoke were recorded at four out of 14 sites, and the longest fire has been going on from June 2022.

"For the third fall in a row, located approximately 50 kilometers east of Snake Island, one of the three block conductors in the Odesa gas field looks more like an ‘eternal flame,’” noted the Center for Journalistic Investigations.
Smoke has also been observed at the nearby sea ice-resistant stationary platform since August 10, after the Ukrainian Navy, in cooperation with defense intelligence, launched a missile attack on one of the offshore platforms captured by the Russians.
The third blazing cell appeared in the first decade of August when one of the three platforms set up closer to the western coast of the Crimean Peninsula was engaged. The fire on the nearby platform started a few days ago – the satellite recorded a plume of smoke on October 30.
After the Ukrainian strikes, the Chernomorneftegaz company, which is controlled by Russian occupation authorities of Crimea, announced the cessation of exploitation of deposits, which reduced hydrocarbon output in the temporarily occupied Crimea by 28.1%.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, Ukraine’s defense intelligence units executed a special raid, as a result of which control was regained of the so-called "Boiko rigs" - oil and gas drilling platforms off the shore of Crimea in the Black Sea.

Deep strikes into Russia by Western long-range missiles to change nature of war - ISW21.

The series of strikes on November 19-20 shows that Ukraine has already started using the long-range weapons systems provided by the West to deliver more complex integrated strikes, which will help the nation effectively wage war against the Russian aggressor.
This is stated in the report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) think tank, seen by Ukrinform.
As noted, during these strikes, Ukrainian forces, in particular, used long-range attack drones and Storm Shadow missiles, hitting a number of military targets in the Russian rear.
ISW has long assessed that the systems and capabilities that Western partners are providing Ukraine, alongside Ukraine's indigenous defense industrial production and innovation efforts, are all constituent components of wider capabilities that Ukraine requires to successfully wage a multi-domain large-scale modern war.
Ukraine has already proven its effectiveness in using drones, often of domestic production, to strike various military targets in the Russian rear, including air bases, command posts, and artillery depots, says analysts.

"Ukraine's arsenal already includes aerial and naval drones and Western-provided systems such as F-16s, HIMARS, and ATACMS, although the conditions of use on the latter systems have been restricted enough to limit the benefit Ukraine can accrue by using them. The addition of more powerful and precise Western-provided systems, such as JASSMs and additional ATACMS, Storm Shadows, and SCALP systems, is crucial in enabling Ukraine to scale up the effects it can generate through long-range strikes against the Russian rear," ISW said.
The report emphasizes that any restrictions on Ukraine's ability to use Western-made weapons for strikes inside Russian territory are narrowing Ukraine's options to develop commensurate strike packages. "Ukraine requires continued Western military assistance, as well as domestic innovation and production, in order to continue building and utilizing strike packages to target the Russian rear and generate tactical to operational-level impacts on the battlefield," analysts conclude.
As reported, on November 17, The New York Times, citing its sources, wrote that U.S. President Joe Biden had allowed Ukraine to use long-range ATACMS missiles against targets deep inside Russian territory.

Later, the Republican leadership in U.S. Senate confirmed the administration’s move to cancel restrictions on Ukraine’s use of ATACMS long-range missiles.
The Times reported with reference to its own sources in the UK government that Ukraine was allowed to hit targets in Russia with Storm Shadow missiles.
Bloomberg, with reference to a Western official, wrote that the Ukrainian military for the first time employed UK-made Storm Shadow cruise missiles to attack military facilities on Russian soil.

Zelensky: Ukrainian army lacks forces to retake Crimea

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged that Ukraine's military currently lacks the strength to reclaim Crimea and emphasized the need to pursue diplomatic solutions.
The head of state said this in an interview with the Japanese news agency Kyodo News, Ukrinform reports.
"We do not have enough forces to return Crimea. Our army does not have enough forces. We must seek diplomatic means, but [this will be possible] only after we know that we are so strong that the Russians will not return with aggression again. Then we can think about diplomatic steps," Zelensky said.

He noted that Crimea is "strategic" not only for Ukraine.
"It is strategic in principle for the world. Because whoever controls Crimea controls security in the Black Sea. Everyone understands this. All food security corridors. […] Here is an example: when Putin occupied Crimea, he blocked the Black Sea. Agricultural products from Ukraine did not reach Africa, Asia, or European countries," Zelensky said.
At the same time, he emphasized that Putin should know that "we will return to all our occupied lands, preferably through diplomatic channels, because all this minimizes casualties."
