Tens of thousands of ethnic Amhara had been massacred by militant ethnic Oromo nationalist forces in the Wollega region. It was an indiscriminate one ; children, women and elders were victims of what many are describing as genocide/ethnic cleaning in the area.
As the government failed to provide security, it allowed farming community members in the area to arm and protect themselves.
Now the government is moving to stripe them of their fire gun licenses and disarm them. Government decision is worrying them as they will be vulnerable to the radical ethnic Oromo Organization operating in the area and facing death again.
It seems the government is now even denying that it was not what it calls “Shane” that was massacring and kidnapping ethnic Amharas in the region. When the Defense Chief of Staff, Field Marshal Berhanu Jula had an interview with Pro-government Media outlet – Lualawi Media – in late September this year, he made claims that it was National Movement of Amhara (NaMA) that was undertaking the kidnappings and killings in the area.
