Back in 2001, EPLF leaders split into two. The reformists used the free press to put out their ideas. The Isayas faction took action to jail these top Ministers, Military Generals and Journalists. It also shut down all non state media. Fast forward 23 years, Asmera has zero tolerance for differing ideas. Private press is non existent. The long term effect is totalitarianism that is suffocating alternative ideas and guaranteeing stagnation.

Today, Mekelle is in similar situation where there’s TPLF split. However, unlike 2001 Asmera, no leader nor journalist is jailed so far. Debate is raging freely. Free press is covering differing ideas. Leaders are competing to win the hearts and minds of the people. This is just today but what will the long term effect of this free flow of ideas be?

Asmera and Mekelle are led by heavily dominated Tigrian elites. There’s shared political culture. Does that mean what we’re seeing today in Mekelle may end up similar to Asmera in the long term?

Agameland is in chaos. There is no government. And that is the worst scenario because thing will only get worse. And when the shooting starts as it inevitably will, you are going to wish there was someone there strong enough to control the situation. In fact, I am sure there will be calls for Eritrea to intervene to sort things out. But to no avail. Agames will sort out one another to the supreme satisfaction of Eritreans.
