It seems that some of you need a clue. Here's what I posted in January

Continuing the Eritreanization of Ethiopia. No warning, no research, no consultation with relevant stakeholders . . . .

EU ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035 explained

All new cars and vans sold in the EU as of 2035 should not produce any CO2 emissions. What does this mean in practice? Check out our FAQ to find out.

o reach its climate neutrality goal by 2050, the EU is taking action to reduce emissions from cars as road transport accounts for one fifth of the EU’s CO2 emissions. The EU aims to cut emissions from cars 55% and from vans 50% by 2030, compared with 2021, in order to reach the goal of zero emissions from new cars and vans by 2035.

Dutch MEP Jan Huitema (Renew), who drafted the report about the revision of the EU's CO2 standards for new cars and vans, joined a Facebook live on the new emission rules in July, on which this Q&A is based.

When will there be a ban on the sale of new CO2-emitting cars, including petrol and diesel-driven cars ?

From 2035, all new cars that come on the market cannot emit any CO2. This is to ensure that by 2050, the transport sector can become carbon-neutral.

UK: BAN ON PETROL AND DIESEL CARS PUSHED BACK TO 2035

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has pushed the ban on petrol and diesel cars back until 2035
as he sets out the government’s new green policies. Read on for all you need to know.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced a revised set of green policies, including the pushing back of the ban on sales of new petrol and diesel cars by five years. Motorists in the UK will still be able to buy petrol and diesel cars until 2035, and you’ll still be able to buy them second hand after this date.

Sunak claimed in his speech that the original goals to reach net zero emissions, including the 2030 ban on petrol and diesel cars, would “impose unacceptable costs on hard-pressed British families” and that the government can “adopt a more pragmatic, proportionate and realistic approach to meeting net zero which eases the burden on working people”.

He also said that it should be the consumer that makes the choice to switch to an electric car, not the government forcing you to do it. The Prime Minister also noted the investment which the UK has secured from Jaguar Land Rover to build a new gigafactory, and that he expects that “the vast majority of cars” sold will be electric by 2030 because of falling costs and improved charging infrastructure.

Ethiopians are struggling to keep up with the new “EV or nothing” policy

Ethiopia became the first country in the world to ban the import of gas and diesel cars. But the country has only around 50 charging stations.

In February, the Ethiopian government banned the import of gas and diesel vehicles to boost EV adoption.

EV experts say the decision came too early and the country wasn’t prepared for it.

EV owners struggle with inadequate charging infrastructure and access to spare parts for their cars. Some say they are looking to
go back to gas or diesel-powered cars.

When Araya Belete’s employer asked him to purchase four new cars in Addis Ababa last year, the IT professional quickly settled on an electric model, manufactured by China’s Kas Auto.

Belete chose the car because the Ethiopian government offers hefty incentives for electric vehicles, which also have lower import duties compared to gas and diesel-powered cars.

But using and maintaining the vehicles has been a struggle.

When one of the cars had a technical issue, Belete had to refer to YouTube videos to fix it. Local mechanics did not know how to repair it, and the manual was written in Mandarin. Belete’s employer also had to bear additional costs to install charging points for the cars due to a lack of public charging infrastructure in Addis Ababa.

It seems the ban on importing petrol and diesel vehicles has been lifted. If it has, can this be considered a positive outcome of the Home-Grown Economic Reform Plan? Let's see how the Transport ministry interpret these rules.
