Ethiopia: The many crimes of the TPLF

By Degeufe Hailu(Green Left) — For the past 26 years, Ethiopia has been ruled by an authoritarian government. The party in government is the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) — a very criminal group. The TPLF represents the interests of just one of the tribes in Ethiopia, the Tigrayan people. The control the TPLF has over Ethiopia is therefore an undemocratic one, because the Tigrayan people only one tribe out of many that has historically lived in Ethiopia. All of Ethiopia’s tribes, who have lived there for centuries, deserve ownership and representation within Ethiopia. The problem now, and for the past 30 years, has been that the TPLF have been the dictators of Ethiopia, and have been brutally putting down the rest of the tribes in the country through terrible violent and underhanded means. One of the TPLF’s favourite methods of control of

ONLF Statement on the New Leadership

The Ethiopian EPRDF parliament has [on April 2] approved Abiy Ahmed to become the new prime minister of Ethiopian autocratic regime. However, the Somali people and even the Ethiopian peoples are skeptical of the current political moves by EPRDF to bring any meaningful change due to the culture and negative history of this party that is characterized by deceit, the hegemony of all political power and use of violence and grave violations of human rights against its opponents. On many occasions, EPRDF has consistently misinformed both the people and the international community in order to divert attention from its grave transgressions and undemocratic rule, especially against the Somali people in Ogaden.Furthermore, the Somali people, who were marginalized and brutally suppressed for almost a century since Ethiopia occupied the Ogaden, became a new victim for EPRDF which further committed acts tantamount

Ethiopia Backslides: the Continuing Harassment of Eskinder Nega

By Danny O'Brien(EFF) — On March 25, bloggers, journalists and activists gathered at a private party in Addis Ababa—the capital of Ethiopia—to celebrate the new freedom of their colleagues. Imprisoned Ethiopian writers and reporters had been released in February under a broad amnesty: some attended the private event, including Eskinder Nega, a blogger and publisher whose detention EFF has been tracking in our Offline series. But the celebration was interrupted, with the event raided by the authorities. Eskinder, together with Zone 9 bloggers Mahlet Fantahun and Fekadu Mehatemework, online writers Zelalem Workagegnhu and Befiqadu Hailu, and six others were seized and detained without charge. The eleven have now finally been released, after 12 days of custody. It remains a disturbing example of just how far Ethiopian police are willing to go to intimidate critical voices even in a time of supposed tolerance.During

Ethiopia reconnects Internet but critical media remain blocked

by Engidu WoldieInternet service has returned to most of Ethiopia that has been in the dark since last February. Mobile data has been shut down in the entire country with the exception of the capital Addis Ababa since the reimposition of a state of emergency on February 16, 2018.Ethiopia has continued to block critical media based abroad, like the Ethiopian Satellite Television and Radio (ESAT) and the Oromo Media Network (OMN) based in the United States. With the absence of an independent media in a country, which descended into a police state after serious protests erupted two years ago, ESAT and OMN were the only means of news for most of Ethiopia’s information deprived population. The two media are also outlawed by the regime that criminalized watching the channels. The shutdown mainly targeted the Oromo and Amhara regions where years of

Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia fail to agree on Nile dispute

By APThe foreign ministers of Sudan, Egypt, and Ethiopia have failed to reach an agreement in the lingering dispute over Ethiopia’s massive dam on the Blue Nile, ministers said on Friday.Egypt is concerned that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam will drastically impact its own share of water from the Nile, on which the entire population relies. Ethiopia, like Egypt, has said that the dam issue is a “matter of life or death.”Sudan’s Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ghandour said on Friday that 15 hours of talks in Khartoum have ended with no deal. The three countries’ intelligence chiefs and irrigation ministers also attended the talks.Ghandour said that, nevertheless, “the meetings were constructive and important,” but that the three sides failed to “end up with satisfying answers.”Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri confirmed the remarks in a report published by the daily al-Shorouk, adding

Ethiopia: Why PM Abiy Ahmed’s first priority should be free expression

Credit: Dietmar.Though it may come with risks, it would be in the government’s own interests to encourage open dialogue and constructive criticism.By William DavisonThe swearing-in this week of Prime Minster Abiy Ahmed and his promising inaugural speech suggests Ethiopia has its best chance yet to address a political crisis that has been building for decades. This comes not a moment too soon. Youthful protesters, particularly in Oromiya, are emboldened and angry. Since 2015, security forces have killed more than 1,000 people as the government has shown both frailty and ruthlessness in the face of persistent demonstrations. Without altering its current trajectory, the country would risk a worsening conflict.Promisingly, the promotion of Abiy looks set to ease unrest and provide space for a rethink. The young leader, still in his early 40s, is the head of the Oromo party in the ruling

Can Abiy Ahmed Save Ethiopia?

Abiy Ahmed, newly elected Prime Minister of Ethiopia, addresses the house of Parliament in Addis Ababa, after the swearing in ceremony on April 2, 2018. (ZACHARIAS ABUBEKER/AFP/GETTY IMAGES)The announcement of a new prime minister has led to widespread celebrations, but reforming the country without alienating the army will not be easy.Written by Nizar Manek | FTADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — In 1990, the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) was a guerrilla alliance battling the Derg, a Marxist-Leninist military junta that had deposed Emperor Haile Selassie in a 1974 coup. A year later, the EPRDF took power; it has ruled Ethiopia ever since. When the Derg fell, Abiy Ahmed, who was recently elected as the EPRDF’s chairman and sworn in as prime minister on Monday, was just 14 years old. Eritrea says relation with Ethiopia can be amended

By AFPEritrea reportedly said its relation with neighboring Ethiopia can be amended providing its long time foe honors international obligations by withdrawing from occupied territories.“I call on the Eritrean government to take the same stand,”Ethiopia’s new Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said in his inaugural address at the national parliament on Monday.Responding to Abiy, Eritrean Information Minister Yemane Gebre Meskel on Monday told the BBC that relations can be mended but it largely depended on Ethiopia.“The ball has stayed for too long in Ethiopia’s court. There is no dispute as the litigation process ended 16 years ago. Ethiopia needs to honour its treaty obligations and respect Eritrea’s sovereignty and territorial integrity by withdrawing from occupied territories – including Badme.”Relations between the two neighbours remain tense following a disastrous and deadly war that led to the death of nearly 70,000 people on

Ethiopia: Beloved Bridal Designer Amsale Aberra Dies at 64

Amsale Aberra, RIP By VogueAmsale Aberra, founder and creative director of the bridal and ready-to-wear line Amsale, has passed away at the age of 64. Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, she moved to Vermont for college, then went to New York, where she earned her degree in fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Soon after, she was shopping for her own wedding dress and found a gap in the market for simple, understated, timeless gowns—it was 1985 and frills and sparkles were de rigueur. Aberra launched Amsale as a custom bridal business out of her apartment, and it quickly grew into one of the industry’s most recognized brands. Kleinfeld was her first wholesaler in 1991, and in the years since the Amsale label expanded to include evening gowns, cocktail dresses, and bridesmaid dresses. Before she passed, Aberra had already chosen

Ethiopia’s Crisis: What is Causing the Political Turmoil and Ethnic Tension?

Political turmoil and ethnic tension have continued to engulf Ethiopia. Begun in 2015, the protest has swept the nation and is getting stronger, pushing the country to the brink of ethnic conflict.By Betre Y. Getahun | AfricaEthiopia has been under a state of emergency for much of the past two years. The first state of emergency was imposed in October 2016 following a year of protests and was lifted at the end of 2017. Ethiopia: The Question Is Not whether There Is Change, but how to Empower the New Prime Minister

Written by Messay KebedeSimply put, the question besieging the mind of every Ethiopian is whether meaningful changes are about to occur in Ethiopia following the dramatic election of Dr. Abiy Ahmed as Ethiopia’s Prime Minister. Under normal circumstances, the officially announced and often debated political agenda of the candidate to the position of prime minister determines the expectations of people. In the case of Ethiopia, however, a candidate committed to a reformist agenda––forcefully confirmed in his inaugural speech––was elected to premiership by a ruling party coalition that recently “approved” the imposition of a state of emergency. The state of emergency gives absolute power to the military apparatus with the express purpose of safeguarding the status quo by suppressing the ongoing popular demand for change. Hence the legitimate question of knowing whether the new Prime Minister can initiate serious reforms under

Can Ethiopia’s first Oromo prime minister pull the nation back from the brink of civil war?

Abiy Ahmed has come to power following a period of intense unrest and violence.Written by Martin PlautFor months now, Ethiopia has been trembling on the brink of a civil war. Anti-government protests that began in 2015 over land rights broadened into mass protests over political and human rights. The government responded with waves of arrest, punctuated by hundreds of killings. Then, last month, the government announced a six-month state of emergency. In the middle of February, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn finally threw in the towel and resigned. For weeks, the country has been without a leader. Now, finally, a brief announcement on state television has declared that Ethiopia’s ruling coalition has voted in Abiy Ahmed as new prime minister. But Ahmed is something of an outsider; a member of the Oromo, who – despite being the country’s largest ethic group, at 34

Dr. Abiy Ahmed’s diversity portfolio

By Abebe GellawIt will be clear in the next few weeks what Dr. Abiy Ahmed can and can’t do as the leader of a regime facing an existential crisis. As the new PM has been elected in the face of fierce opposition and backstabbing by the TPLF elite, not to mention the popular discontent fueling the unrest across the nation, his reign will certainly be a rollercoaster. Whatever the case, I wish Dr. Abiy all the best during the rough and bumpy ride at this critical juncture in Ethiopian history.Politics aside, one must appreciate the diversity within Dr. Abiy’s extended family that exemplifies the beauty and best of Ethiopia.Born in Beshasha, Jimma Zone, in the aftermath of the 1974 revolution, his name was Abiyot, “revolution”, now using his nickname Abiy, according to the Reporter. Ethiopia: The Enemy Within

By Addissu AdmasOur fathers, as our forefathers, used the word Telat to refer to an enemy who is totally alien. Telat was the totally other: the one that hails from distant lands, or perhaps from across the ocean. The word was used for a long while to refer to the Italians, who twice failed to conquer and colonize Ethiopia. The period before and after their second incursion during the years between 1936 and 1941 was often referred to as Ke Telat befit (before the advent of the enemy) and Ke Telat behuala [after the (departure/defeat of) enemy]. The word Telat connotes in the mind of Ethiopians not only alien-ness, but also one who has ominous powers to rain utter destruction and suffering upon them. One which could effectively end the very existence of their nation. Thankfully, since then, Ethiopia has

The TPLF Regime Billing for Killing

Ethiopia: Acts of Necessity to Bring Truth and Sanity

By Dr. Dejenie Alemayehu Lakew (Former Assoc. Prof. of Mathematics)We study science to precisely know what the causes and true behaviors of things so that we act accordingly. One of the truth in nature is that things exist because of balance of powers from within and outside. One such example where the effects of extreme imbalance of power observed is what is called a black hole in cosmology. A black hole is a dead star. It was a giant star like our sun, but because of the imbalance of powers, powers that pull towards the center are much greater than the ones which pull outwards and thereby the star collapses and becomes a singularity. It loses its power to be a shining star and source of light to bodies around. Death is the overcoming power of energies that incapacitate and

Ethiopia’s cabinet reshuffle may be too little, too late to quell protests

By OPrideEthiopia’s Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn on Tuesday announced a compelled cabinet reshuffle in an effort to contain sustained and stubborn anti-government protests. The changes follow a swift declaration on Oct. 9 of a state of emergency, which has effectively militarized an already authoritarian state. In its 25 year-long reign, the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) has never made major political concessions in response to public grievances. In that regard, the replacement of key government ministers and Desalegn’s allies is yet another victory for the protesters. (In January authorities grudgingly withdrew the so-called Addis Ababa master plan which served as the immediate trigger for the Oromo protests.)However, the tone deaf ministerial shuffle, which was unanimously approved by the country’s single-party parliament, sidesteps the protesters political grievances and it will do very little to quell the uprising. The move can

The West Could Soon Press TPLF (EPRDF) To Sit & Negotiate With Oppositions

By DeBirhanThe West could soon use its leverage to push Ethiopia’s ruling Front TPLF (EPRDF) to sit down and negotiate with Ethiopian opposition forces, it has been learned.According to sources the pressures are also on Ethiopian oppositions to come together and form one strong grouping which can negotiate with the regime in Addis. The back door initiative is already “set in stone.”The new Western initiatives come after thousands of anti-government protesters were killed in Ethiopia’s Oromo and Amhara regions since November 2015 by government security forces, which has resulted in the declaration of State of Emergency earlier this month. If the TPLF(EPRDF) regime declines to come to the table and find political solutions, it could “face the consequences.” The regime and the country is highly dependent on Western governments’ assistance. The initiative is to find political solutions before the current political impasse

Ethiopia: The summer of our upheaval

By Yilma BekeleThis is the summer the Ethiopian people declared ‘I’ve had it up to here’ and rebelled against Woyane rule. A few things ignited the rage that has now engulfed the whole country. The Addis Ababa Master plan designed to confiscate land though being in the planning stage for a while did not go do well with the poor farmers. It was Abbay Tsehaye’s turn to prove his worth and he failed miserably. TPLF embarked on its killing orgy to quiet the noise. Over a thousand lives, tens of thousands youth in camps and untold property damage the repression did not achieved the intended result. The issue of Wolkait-Tsegede reared its head at this unfortunate time. Unfortunate for the Tigrai based cabal. Of course Wolkait-Tsegede question became an Amhara issue. It is also true folks began to connect the dots.

Is the Regime in Addis Ababa Blackmailing the International Community?

By Alem MamoEthiopia’s military participation at the international stage has a long history. Among the highlights is the 1951-1954 mission where Ethiopian troops took part in the Korean War, in which Kagnew battalion, led by Major General Mulugeta Buli, stands tall. The Battalion consisting of 3158 soldiers along with contingents from twenty countries, participated and performed with great distinction with 121 Ethiopian soldiers who died and 536 wounded. When the Korean war ended, the Ethiopians were the only ones with no prisoners of war to collect from the North Korean side because the Ethiopians never surrendered during their four-year mission.[1] At the end of the war there were American POWs in North Korea and several thousands from other participating countries.[2]This prestigious and well respected international military tradition of the Ethiopian Army has been tarnished by the current ethno-kleptocratic regime of

Ethiopia’s Regime Faces Precarious Times As Diaspora Plans for the Future

By Endalk | Global Voices In November 2015, residents of a small town called Ginchi launched protests against a proposal by Ethiopia’s government to expand Addis Ababa, the capital, into the surrounding farmlands in the Oromia region. The protests have since grown into a movement demanding greater self-rule, freedom and respect for the ethnic identity of the Oromo people, who have experienced systematic marginalization and persecution over the last quarter-century.In Amhara, the country's second largest region, protests started in Gonder on July 31 this year, and rapidly devolved from addressing localized identity questions of the Welkait community into a region-wide movement that has spread into numerous other provinces in just four months. Though the large-scale July 31 incident in Gonder marked the first major confrontation between Amhara protest leaders and the Ethiopian government, the dispute between the Amharas and the

Ethiopian jamming of Radio Eritrea wreaking havoc on amateur Radio Frequencies

By ARRLThe battle continues between Radio Eritrea (Voice of the Broad Masses) and Radio Ethiopia, which is said to be jamming the Eritrean broadcaster with broadband white noise. The problem for radio amateurs is that the battle is taking place in the 40 meter phone band — 7.145 and 7.175 MHz — with the jamming signal reported by the IARU Region 1 Monitoring System (IARUMS) to be 20 kHz wide on each channel. The on-air conflict has been going on for years; Ethiopia constructed new transmitting sites in 2008 and is said to use two or three of them for jamming purposes. The interfering signals can be heard in North America after dark. According to IARUMS Region 1 Coordinator Wolf Hadel, DK2OM, Radio Eritrea is airing separate programs on each frequency. He said in the IARUMS September newsletter that telecommunications

Report of Eritrean pilots defecting to Ethiopia is false

Eritrean MiG-29 By MadoteEvery few months or so, the Ethiopian regime creates a false story about Eritrea in the hopes of deflecting attention from its deteriorating human rights crisis.Yesterday, the Ethiopian regime, through its proxy the "Red Sea Afar Democratic Organization" (RSADO), claimed two Eritrean pilots defected to Ethiopia using their jet fighter. As expected, no evidence was provided for such a claim, but that didn't stop the AP, VOA and other mainstream media outlets from reporting on it.Even the Ethiopian regime declined to comment on it, which is usually a strong indication the story was made up.One official who did comment on it was Eritrea's information minister, Yemane Ghebremeskal who dismissed the report as "rubbish" to BBC correspondent Mary Harper.Yemane added that this is not the first time that the Ethiopian-created terrorist group RSADO has made such false allegations about Eritrea. While

You might not have known because casualty numbers have been played down; “evil forces” and accidents are blamed rather than the soldiers that fired the bullets; we are even deprived of the ability to fully grasp the situation because journalists are not allowed to report on it and the Internet is periodically shut down by the government. (In fact, last week Ethiopia finally admitted to the deaths of more than 500 anti-government protestors. Protesters insist that more people have died.) Whatever we make of the government’s prevarication, the Irreechaa Massacre that took place at the beginning of this month was a point of no return.Irreechaa is a sacred holiday celebrated by the Oromo people, when several thousands gather annually at the banks of Lake Hora

Ethiopian unrest triggers collapse in tourism

By John AglionbyFinancial Times-A wave of anti-government protests and the imposition of a state of emergency has triggered a collapse in tourism bookings in Ethiopia, underlining the effect the unrest is having on one of Africa’s best-performing economies. As the demonstrations spread across the country, governments, including the US, UK, Australia, Canada and Ireland, have advised their citizens against all non-essential travel to the country or Amhara and Oromia regions at the centre of the instability.Hailemariam Desalegn, Ethiopia’s prime minister, has said the death toll from the demonstrations, which began last November and have been exacerbated by the authoritarian regime’s brutal crackdown on protesters, could be as high as 500. Thousands of people have been arrested and the government imposed a state of emergency as it grapples with the biggest threat to the Horn of Africa nation’s stability in years. The

A weekend with Ethiopians

By Yilma BekeleI was thinking if by any chance an alien is to visit our planet and happen to land in good old Ethiopia, I am afraid the space traveler would be disappointed with earthlings and ‘It’ will engage Turbocharge and beat it back to where it came from in a New York minute. That is because today Ethiopia is not a pleasant place to be. It is supposedly the envy of the world with ‘double digit ‘ growth and an emerging Democracy. Well that story is fake. It is under Emergency Rule of the most draconian kind and the regime has declared war on its own citizens. What our alien would encounter is a society that is malfunctioning in a spectacular manner and teetering on the verge of collapse. It will see famine and starvation in the 21st century, mass

(Audio) Shining a spotlight on government repression in Ethiopia

By Charlie EnsorFor this week’s podcast, Humanosphere takes a look at the current situation in Ethiopia with our guest, Hallelujah Lulie, a postgraduate at the London School of Economics and former journalist covering the political and security situation in the country.During the summer, the plight of the Oromo people came onto our screens when Ethiopian athlete, Feyisa Lilesa, took silver in the men’s marathon at the Rio Olympics. But the protests have been going on for much longer, unearthing deeply rooted ethnic inequality and causing the worst protests the country has ever seen. For nearly a year now, the Oromo people, one of the largest ethnic groups in Ethiopia, have protested against government oppression, with little international media focus given to their oppression.Since protests began last year, another ethnic group, the Amhara, have started to show their discontent at the status

“Red Terror” returns to Ethiopia under a different regime and a new name: “Red Zone”

By Alem MamoIt was in 1978 the Provisional Military Administration known as the Derg declared what it called “red terror” in Ethiopia.[1] What followed was hard to comprehend; it was a grotesque demonstration of inhumanity against fellow human beings. Streets were littered with bodies of young men and women with placards displayed on them reading “red terror.” For the survivors and their families this period is a particularly painful one, which they wish didn’t happen. Whatever the context, the use of the term “red,” especially coming from the government policy makers, has a chilling psychological and emotional effect on the people of Ethiopia. It brings back that dark period and pokes the terrible memories of those who endured so much under the official campaign of “red terror” (1978-1979). The declaration of a “state of emergency” by the Tigray People’s Liberation

State Department Issues Travel Warning for Ethiopia

By State Department The U.S. Department of State warns U.S. citizens to defer all non-essential travel to Ethiopia due to ongoing unrest that has led to hundreds of deaths, thousands of arrests, as well as injuries and extensive property damage, especially in Amhara and Oromia States. The U.S. Embassy’s ability to provide consular services in many parts of the country is limited by the current security situation. The Government of Ethiopia declared a State of Emergency effective October 8, 2016. An October 15 decree states that individuals may be arrested without a court order for activities they may otherwise consider routine, such as communication, consumption of media, attending gatherings, engaging with certain foreign governments or organizations, and violating curfews. The decree prohibits U.S. and other foreign diplomats from traveling farther than 40 kilometers outside of Addis Ababa without prior approval from the

Ethiopia: Chatham House says Tigrayan monopoly deepens crisis

By ESAT News (October 18, 2016)A think-tank said on Tuesday that corruption by ruling party officials and disproportionate benefits of the economy that has gone mainly to Tigrayans drove the people to rise up against the regime in Ethiopia.London-based Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs, said in a report that “perceptions are widespread that control of the EPRDF and a disproportionate share of the benefits of the growing economy have gone to ethnic Tigrayans, whose Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) formed the core of the EPRDF.”“Over the last two-and-a-half decades, there has been a growing contradiction inherent in the expansion of the economy and provision of services, as it is outstripped by growth in expectations, especially among the youth,” the report further said.“This anger is intensified because of corruption in the political system; the Oromo People’s Democratic Organization

Ethiopia: Draconian measures will escalate the deepening crisis

By AmnestyHeavy-handed measures by the Ethiopian government will only escalate a deepening crisis that has claimed the lives of more than 800 protesters since protests began in November 2015, said Amnesty International today after the government issued a directive imposing wide-ranging restrictions as part of a state of emergency. The directive authorises arrests without warrants, as well as rehabilitation measures. When such measures have been used in the past, they have led to arbitrary detention of protesters at remote military facilities without access to their families and lawyers.“These emergency measures are extremely severe and so broad that they threaten basic human rights that must not be curtailed even under a state of emergency,” said Muthoni Wanyeki, Amnesty International’s Regional Director for East Africa, the Horn and the Great Lakes.“These measures will deepen, not mitigate, the underlying causes of the sustained protests

Sen. Franken to Meet with Coalition of Community Leaders to Discuss Human Rights Crisis in Ethiopia

Sen. Franken to Meet with Coalition of Community Leaders to Discuss Human Rights Crisis in Ethiopia MINNESOTA [10/18/16]—On Wednesday, October 19, U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) will meet with coalition of community leaders at his office in St. Paul to discuss the increasingly dire situation in Ethiopia—where the government is violently cracking down on, and in some cases killing, political protestors.Earlier this year, Sen. Franken helped author a bipartisan resolution condemning the serious human rights violations of the Ethiopian government—including unprovoked arrests, torture, and oppression. He called on the Ethiopian government to halt its violent crackdowns, and called upon the Secretary of State to review security assistance to Ethiopia in light of allegations that Ethiopian security forces have killed civilians. During his trip to Ethiopia last year, Sen. Franken also met with civil society groups to discuss the ongoing human

State of Emergency to save an illegitimate ethnic Apartheid regime and Free Press indifference

Blaming the civilized people of Ethiopia for crimes of the uncivilized ethnic Apartheid regime in the cover of development, stability and security for its cronies and foreign partners is crime by its own. If anything, it is another attempt to compromise Ethiopians by the same old as well as new and home-grown enemies.By Teshome DebalkeIt is unambiguously clear by now, the make-believe government of Ethiopia and its credulous foreign partners couldn’t comprehend what the civilized people of Ethiopia have been telling them for the last 25 years. That is, giving diplomatic and political legitimacy by embracing and empowering the long despised and discarded Apartheid rule and the racketeering economy it runs is not only a crime against humanity and corruption but, modern day proxy occupation. Therefore, the latest State of Emergency (more a State of Panic) to preserve Apartheid rule and

Posting on Facebook is now a crime under Ethiopia’s state of emergency

By Lily KuoA state of emergency declared in Ethiopia last week is growing more draconian by the day. Posting updates on the current status of the country, hit by anti-government protests since last November, is now a crime, the government said over the weekend.Watching Oromia Media Network and Ethiopian Satellite Television and Radio, outlets run by the Ethiopian diaspora supportive of the protesters, is also illegal.“The military command will take action on those watching and posting on these social media outlets,” Siraj Fegessa, Ethiopia’s minister of defense, said on state television. Those who violate the terms of the state of emergency risk imprisonment of three to five years.Ethiopia’s largest ethnic groups, the Oromo and the Amhara, are protesting what they see as the marginalization of their rights and freedoms by the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), dominated by

Ethiopia Opens a Pandora’s Box of Ethnic Tensions

By Aleksandra W. Gadzala Since November 2015, Ethiopia has been beset by an unprecedented wave of protests. They began as a rebuke to a government plan to expand the municipal boundaries of the capital, Addis Ababa, into Oromia Region. They have since expanded to the neighboring Amhara Region, underscoring decades of grievances against ethnic marginalization and authoritarian rule by the governing Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF). The regime has responded aggressively. Human Rights Watch reports upwards of five hundred people have been so far killed in what the United States has decried as an “excessive use of force.” Tens of thousands more have been detained. An unexplained fire on September 3 in Kilinto prison in which hundreds of political prisoners are housed killed at least twenty-three. Rather than backing down, however, the protesters are gathering steam. The unrest has

Ethiopia’s alarming trend of state terrorism should rattle everyone

By Bona GesheIn a televised statement on October 8 Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn declared a state of emergency, the first in the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front, EPRDF’s, quarter a century rule. It was a last ditch effort to halt the sustained Oromo uprising which has intensified as it entered its 11th month. As it has done over the last two decades, the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) dominated regime resorted to the federal constitution (Article 93) to intensify and legitimize its oppression.Ironically, EPRDF has utterly ignored and even trampled upon the same constitution for 25 long years when citizens exercised their right to freedom of expression (Art 29), peaceful assembly (Art 30), right to life (Art 15), prohibition of inhumane treatment (Art 18), freedom of religion (Art 29) and many other provisions. In practice, the Oromo and other oppressed

Government Lies about Poverty Reduction: the Case of the Amhara Region

Written by D. K. Bimrew, Toronto, CanadaEver since it came to power by way of armed struggle in 1991, the Government of Ethiopia had been implementing agricultural led industrialization (ADLI) development policy. The government repeatedly declared achievements of its policy in the reduction of poverty are much better than any previous rulers of the country and any government in the sub-Sahara region. The government is not alone in this declaration. Its bravados are endorsed by international organizations. What makes the endorsements by these organizations unreliable is that they are based on the data provided by the government of Ethiopia which is manipulated and doctored to fit its self-serving interest. Development in Ethiopia is not only belonged to an economic realm rather it an ideology to justify authoritarian rule. Therefore, development datas are cooked to suit official narratives of of continued “double

Haile Mariam Desalegn (HMD) Delivers an Emergency Decree under Duress

By Yusuf MohamedI watched the poor HMD on YouTube blabbering an emergency decree he said is legislated by the parliament. That is, the “Ethiopian Parliament”, a parliament of castrated men and barren women, insensitive and unmoved by the wholesale slaughter of thousands of peaceful Oromo men, women and children.HMD looked like a mounted mule gasping for air, shame on him. He is forced to bend over for TPLF and TPLF is giving it to him, what a pity. In delivering the decree, HMD had a very low demeanor when compared with the men of the Dergue. The men of the Dergue had a voice that shattered the transistor radios and black/white TVs of their day. They were alert and certain. They radiated fear and had piercing voice that summoned attention. Desalegn’s did not. His voice was that of a hopeless

Ethiopia’s state of emergency could trigger civil war and food shortage

By Edao Dawano | OprideThe Irreecha massacre on October 2 in Bishoftu, a town 25 miles Southeast of Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, where an estimated 678 people were killed, marks a major turning point for the nearly year-long Oromo protests. The protests in Ethiopia have exposed the government’s brutality and repression through videos and graphic images captured by citizen journalists. The public anger over the tragic end of Irreecha celebration has led to significant changes in the tactics employed by the protesters. In response, the regime in Addis Ababa has declared a six-month-long state of emergency. In West Arsi, which has emerged as the epicenter of the post-Irreecha resistance, protesters have responded by blocking roads, burning government vehicles and uprooting the local government establishments. In some areas, the protesters are engaging in self-defense against the Ethiopian security forces. For example, gunfire exchanges

MEPs denounce worsening human rights situation in Ethiopia

By EU Human RightsDeteriorating human rights situation in Ethiopia, killings of Oromos and the country-wide six-month state of emergency declared on Sunday 9 October by the Ethiopian government were amongst the main issues raised by Human Rights subcommittee and Development committee Members in a joint meeting on Wednesday morning.MEPs expressed their concerns as regards the worsening human rights situation in Ethiopia during a debate with various experts and representatives from the European External Action Service (EEAS), the European Commission, and the Ethiopian Embassy. They are worried by continuous public arrests, waves of violence and by the country-wide six-month state of emergency declared by the Ethiopian authorities on Sunday 9 October after months of anti-government protests.MEPs were critical against the EU policy vis-à-vis Ethiopia arguing it is “falling a long way behind its own standards regarding human rights”. “Maintain the dialogue

Dictatorship, state of emergency, self-deception and the end: TPLF plays its last card

By Alem Mamo Authoritarian regimes are very skilled in elevating the concept of denial to a whole different level. Their standard play book is almost identical regardless of geography, political orientation or culture. First, they begin with their over-inflated self-worth, that is followed by their exaggerated accomplishments, and when the end is near they view themselves as messianic saviors with the mission to save the country and its people. This is the natural growth process of authoritarian regimes. Among many one particular trait is the most common in their mind set, which is denial and self-deception.In 2011, during the Libyan uprising, Muammar Gaddafi was asked about the rebellion engulfing the country to get rid of his regime. Gaddafi’s response was pure self-deception. He said “I am loved by all my people, and there are no protests in Tripoli.” He also

The protests have frequently grown violent, and police are accused of responding with unnecessary force.Activists say at least 450 people have been killed. Herman Cohen blames Tigrian domination, fake federalism for current crisis in Ethiopia

Written by ESATFormer US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Herman Cohen, said that he believes the current crises in Ethiopia was a result of domination by Tigrians over the economy and politics of the country as well as putting in place a “fake” federal political arrangement.“In 1991 a system of states was established based on ethnic groups. But this was a fake system because none of the states that had ethnic groups different from the Tigrians had any voice what their government should be and what they should have. So it is strictly a one party state, which most African governments had abandoned long time ago,” he noted in an exclusive interview with ESAT.“It looks to me that the government does not understand there are major grievances among large groups of people especially younger people who graduated from

Declaring a state of emergency cannot reverse Oromo peoples’ struggle for freedom and democracy

OLF Press ReleaseDespite being the majority in Ethiopia, the Oromo people have been marginalized by the successive Ethiopian governments. Unimaginable atrocities have been committed against the Oromo during the campaign to create the Ethiopian empire and afterwards to upkeep it. In the process, the Oromo were reduced to third class citizenship status on their own land. Our people have been expressing their grievances at different times but the response from the ruling Ethiopian authorities have always been to violently suppress their demand. When the current TPLF/EPDRF government came into power, the OLF participated in the transitional government hoping that it will end the cycles of oppressions and subjugations for all peoples in Ethiopia. Within a short period of time, however, it became apparent that the objective of the TPLF was not to create a democratic and all-inclusive system of government but

Ethiopia admits death toll in anti-regime protests may exceed 500

By John Aglionby | FTEthiopia admitted on Tuesday that the death toll from 11 months of anti-government protests might have exceeded 500 but warned that so-called “extremist violent groups” would be dealt with forcefully. However, Hailemariam Desalegn, Ethiopia’s prime minister, did acknowledge at a press conference in Addis Ababa with Angela Merkel, the visiting German chancellor, that the political system needed reform. The ruling coalition has been in power for 25 years and controls every seat in parliament. Its authoritarian approach to governing has been blamed for exacerbating growing discontent across one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies.Mr Hailemariam said there had been at least 170 deaths in the region of Oromia and another 120 in Amhara since demonstrations began last November. But he said: “When you add it up it could be more than 500.”Before Tuesday, the authorities had declined to give a

EU calls for an independent investigation into death of protesters in Ethiopia

By EU Press Release Extremely concerned about the death of protesters in Ethiopia, the Chair of the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI), Elena Valenciano (S&D, ES), made the following statement calling for an independent investigation:“On 2 October at least 50 people died after police in Ethiopia fired teargas and warning shots to disperse anti-government protesters at the religious Ireecha festival in Bishoftu, triggering a stampede. Opposition groups have even estimated the deaths at 600 or more. I deplore the deaths of these civilians and stand together with Ethiopia and all Ethiopians in mourning the victims. Ethiopia: Could more state of Emergency help the TPLF

By Rundassa Asheetee HundeeThe TPLF has passed so many state of emergencies since 1995 and once again, it’s puppet prime minister sat in-front of his fellow puppets and talked about the foreign powers who are destabilizing the Tigre colonized empire and promised to deal with the Oromo protest shortly. While it is understandable that the Tigreans have all the reason to get mad at their puppet ministers and killer agents, there is nothing they can do more than what they have already done thus far. The legitimacy of the Ethiopian government is gone a long time ago

By Girma T.Arrogance and Ignorance are two simple words that best describe the policy and the poltical strategies of the Ethiopian government mainly dominated by minority Tigre ethnic group from the northern part of Ethiopia in response to the demands of the Oromo people and other ethnic groups in Ethiopia. The Oromo people along with Amhara representing about 55% of the Ethiopian population have been protesting the poltical and economic marginalization by the minority Tigre ethnic government who is about 6% of the Ethiopian population. The Oromo people severely impacted by the minority rule have staged public demonstrations for equality, Justice and genuine representation in the political process of the country. In return, the government emboldened by the indifference of the Western powers about scores of human rights violations embarked on killing, torturing, harassing and imprisoning thousands of innocent Oromo and Amhara people.

Ethiopia: What Do We Learn from the Western Media Stampede Fiasco?

Written by Belayneh AbateWestern governments and major media outlets have labeled the cause of the Irrecha massacre in Ethiopia as stampede. Furthermore, they have reduced the number of deaths to 55 echoing the lies of the murderers. They labeled the cause of this massacre stampede, not because they believe it was stampede, but they want to disguise or belittle their dogs’ heinous crimes as usual. Belittling this worst crime as stampede is pricking Ethiopia’s conscience with thorns and needles. They have been pricking Ethiopian’s conscience because they think they can say anything about her since she has been divided and weakened for the last 25 years.Westerners follow scientific methods to analyze and identify the root causes of incidents related to their peoples. However, they intentionally ignore root cause analysis and focus at their own interests when it comes to the

Ethiopia: Unforgivable Sins of the West!

By Yimer MuheIf it weren’t a monstrous entity that we are fighting against and haven’t suffered under three successive repressive regimes during our life time, the West’s unblinking hypocrisy would have no doubt thrown our conviction in the lofty principles of democracy into disarray and chaos and force us to seriously question its sanctity. Or is democracy a necessity for the West but a luxury for the rest they can live without? Or does it have to be rationed and time-released in developing nations like Ethiopia because a full dose of it is unhealthy for their economy? That is actually what President Obama – the leader of the free world – alluded to during his visit to Ethiopia in August 2015 at which time he also made his infamous remark of “Ethiopia is a democracy” cementing further his administration’s relationship

On what was called ‘Declaration of Emergency’ in Ethiopia

Written by Henok Gabisa1 – Arrests, brutal crackdown has been taking place already. What will this state of emergency change ?The country has already been under the same exact situation of state of emergency. Since the first protest broke out in Ginchi town, the people have endured all kinds of governmental brutality with impunity. For all intents and purposes, Oromia fell under the rule of the command post as of December of 2015 (see EBC report on December 15 or 16 where Getachew Reda and the PM HMD vowed for “merciless and definitive” action/measure against the protesters). The same statement was made by HMD in regard to the Amhara protest a month ago. So, that means, the country is already in exact similar situation with state of emergency. No official of the regime has ever been investigated and prosecuted for the

The TPLF Want War and Oromos Will Give Them One: The Last Gasps of a Fascist State

By Adnew WakjiraThe TPLF junta has been daring Oromos to war and they are more than ready to take it on but this fascistic clique needs warning that in this conflict imposed on the Oromo people there will only be one victor and that is not going to be the Tigrean ruling elite. The Bishoftu butchery of Oromos in the hands of TPLF murderous forces should now be the single worst war crime committed against a civilian population by an Ethiopian regime in the contemporary history of the country. TPLF forces had committed carnage in the Ogaden, in Benisahngul, Sidama…and so on but none on the scale of the carnage in Bishoftu.By massacring close to a thousand Oromos in such a closed space and short span of time, Abaye Tsehaye and the TPLF murderers have surpassed the brutality of Graziani, their

UN High Commissioner statement on Ethiopia tragedy

By Rupert ColvilleThere has been increasing unrest in several towns in the Oromia region, south east of Addis Ababa, since last Sunday when many people died after falling into ditches or into the Arsede lake while apparently fleeing security forces following a protest at a religious festival in the town of Bishoftu. The protests have apparently been fuelled in part by a lack of trust in the authorities’ account of events as well as wildly differing information about the death toll and the conduct of security forces. We call on the protestors to exercise restraint and to renounce the use of violence. Security forces must conduct themselves in line with international human rights laws and standards. There is clearly a need for an independent investigation into what exactly transpired last Sunday, and to ensure accountability for this and several other incidents

Irreecha and Woyane madness

By Yilma BekeleOctober 2nd, 2016 will be a day of infamy in the history of our great nation. Oct 2nd will stand along Yekatit 12, 1937 where the Fascist leader Graziani ordered the massacre of over 30,000 Ethiopians in Addis Ababa and vicinity due to an attempt on his life. We erected a monument at Sidist Kilo to commemorate that dark day. It is there both to remind us about the price of losing sovereignty and the consequences. No one has killed us indiscriminately like that until the arrival of Woyane. It is sad but October 2nd 2016 will equal in the atrocity to that ugly day in 1937. Indian Professor in Ethiopia: An Appeal to the International Community about Human Rights Situation

An appeal to International community on the pathetic situation of human rights violation against Ethiopian Oromo people.I am an Indian, worked as a professor for about 5 years since 2011. All these days, I never felt that Ethiopia is a democratic country. I never saw any kind of freedom to the public in Ethiopia. The government is running against the principles of democracy. I felt it as totally dictatorship government with autocratic policies. They conduct elections for name sake to elect their nominees only. For name sake that is for the sake of international funds from UN, UNDP, US and EU. They named their constitution as Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, but it is totally autocratic government. As senior professor, I was surprised to note that how the US, UN, EU and UNDP are kept silent where there is no freedom for

Ethiopians should prepare for the collapse of TPLF

By Obang MethoIf we Ethiopians are not going to repeat the mistakes of the past, we must think about what we want for the future and how to actually accomplish that vision. This discussion cannot simply be about defeating a common enemy—ethnic apartheid regime of TPLF—but about how to build an Ethiopia where “humanity comes before ethnicity,” or any other distinctions and where we seek a humane, just, fair and inclusive society for “no one will be free until all are free.”What worries me most is that ethnic hatred regime of TPLF/EPRDF will collapse without any clear forewarning and then what? There may not be any opportunity to follow a legitimate process of selecting a political parties and instead, it might be wise to plan for a transitional or caretaker government that would be time-limited, perhaps to three years or less, that

Did Seyoum Mesfin and Abay Tsehaye Mastermind behind the Stampede?I am deeply saddened by the death and/or injuries of hundreds of Ireecha festival spectators at Lake Bishoftu, Oromiya on October 2, 2016. So, to the friends and families of the Hora martyrs, I offer my condolences on the passing of their loved one (ones). At ragged cliffs of Lake Bishoftu, I wondered why the TPLF’s/the EPRDF’s police and security forces attempted to disperse a crowd of several hundred thousand by firing tear gas, rubber bullets and live ammunition.I believe that the victims’ family should consider to receive justice by bringing criminal charges against the police, the security and the TPLF’s/the EPRDF’s government because they are responsible and accountable for the death and/or injuries of their loved one (ones). To explain, the police, the security and the TPLF’s government should have identified high

Anti-government protest near Ethiopia’s capital

By BBCProtests have broken out on the outskirts of Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, police say. I saw truckloads of police headed towards the areas where demonstrators have been blocking roads and singing. Rights groups say more than 500 people have died since protests first erupted in Ethiopia's Oromia and Amhara regions in November 2015. The unrest was sparked by a government plan to expand the capital into Oromia. This led to fears that farmers from the Oromo ethnic group, the largest in Ethiopia, would be displaced. The plan was later dropped but protests continued, highlighting issues such as alleged political repression and economic marginalisation. On Sunday, at least 55 people died in a stampede at an religious festival in Oromia.Activists say the security forces opened fire on protesters, causing the stampede. The government denies the allegation, blaming "evil forces" for the stampede.

We Ethiopians Must Lead and Shape Our Own Destiny

By Aklog Birara (D/R)The people of Ethiopia have spoken loud and clear. The TPLF/EPRDF ethnic-elite dictatorship commandeered by the TPLF that kills with impunity and plunders with gusto must go. When a regime carries-out murders, maiming and wounding, massive jailing and enforced disappearances of tens of thousands of innocent people instead of listening and responding to their legitimate demands for justice, freedom, genuine equality, inclusion and democracy, it is time for it to go for good. Otherwise, the consequences for Ethiopia and its 102 million citizens will be unimaginable. By all criteria, Ethiopia is a failing state and will soon join the likes of Syria, South Sudan and others. We must do all we can to avert this scenario. My estimation is that, if all the country’s fractured and weak political, social, religious and actors unite to work on a compelling

Ethiopia at a crossroads: apartheid, civil war or reconciliation?

By Tariku Abas EteneshEthiopia is seeing an increasing number of civilian protests, which are brutally suppressed by the government. It seems that the elite in power needs to heed the lessons taught by the Rwandan genocide: Do not play with ethnic hatred. The year-long, nationwide and unceasing popular anti-government revolt in Ethiopia has brought the country’s ‘ethnolinguistic federalism’ experiment to a dead end. Despite the country’s constitution professing the equality of ‘all the peoples of Ethiopia’, for the past 25 years ‘equality’ has been a factor of who has the most firepower among the rebel groups that toppled the former military regime in 1991. As a result of the political atmosphere in the country, where the best armed takes all, all aspects of the federal government (i.e. intelligence, military, police, state banks, airlines and core sectors of the country’s economy) are

Dear Mother- A young Ethiopian activist’s letter to his mother

Dear mother,By now you already know that I am an activist or should I say a freedom fighter (የነጻነት ታጋይ) Along side my best friends, I fight for justice, freedom and democracy in this country of ours. I assure you when I say I fight, I don’t mean fighting with guns or in any violent way. No, we fight with our pens, computers, with our minds, creativity and imagination. I want you to know that ours is uncompromisingly peaceful and non-violent struggle. It is the other side (the government that is) as you know, who is employing brute force on our peaceful struggle, including, mass arrest, torture and extrajudicial killings. Regardless of the government’s behaviour however, we are unflinchingly committed to continue our struggle for justice in a peaceful way because, we strongly believe, in the end those who are

‘Alien, hosts and guests’ how pseudo-scholars divide Ethiopia

Written by Girma TeferaThe famous African-American minister and activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr is one of the most successful world leaders of a nonviolent resistance to injustice. During one of his inspiring speeches many decades ago, he once said:“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”In this 21st century, unfortunately, most of our so-called “politicians” and “scholars” from Ethiopia do not seem to comprehend such a simple but principled concept by MLK. Maybe we Ethiopians are better off without these politicians and scholars. Despite these pseudo-scholars instigating hate and division, many Ethiopians have come together- as exemplified by the recent unity & solidarity between “Oromoprotests” and “Amharaprotests.”But lo and behold, hate always finds a way to lurk back into Ethiopian politics! This is what we find when we

Beware of TPLF’s minority card

Beware of TPLF's minority cardWritten by Jawar MohammadRecently you might have noticed that TPLF is propagating 'Somalis' protesting against OLF, G7 etc. Its important to know that these are members of the TPLF's puppet party in Somali region ( its like OPDO and ANDM members rallying in support of the regime). In fact many of the thugs are not from Somali regional state but from Djibouti, Somalia, Somaliland and even Kenya. Back home the psychopathic president of the region has forced residents of Jigjiga to stage a rally. Why all this? First it shows the regime have given up on its puppet parties in Oromia and Amhara regions. Pro-regime rallies planned in Oromia and Amhara were either cancelled due to fear of turning into protest or no one showed up.But there is more sinister motive than just this. It is

Drawing Parallels among popular revolts in Tigray, Oromo and Amhara about nature of Ethiopian State

Protesters chant slogans during a demonstration over what they say is unfair distribution of wealth in the country at Meskel Square in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa, August 6. TIKSA NEGERI / ReutersWritten by Tsegaye Tegenu (PhD) There is an interesting parallel between the popular uprising in Tigray led by TPLF in the 1980s and the recent popular protests in Oromo and Amhara regions. All popular movements, including Eritrea's secession led by EPLF, reveal the true characteristics, limitation and historical nature of the Ethiopian central state. These movements profoundly questioned the capability of the Ethiopian central government to change the material wellbeing of the local people. All popular uprisings did not trust the central government when it comes to economic development. Whatever the characteristic or name given to it, be it unitarist or federalist, the popular movements revealed the unchanging profound

Ethiopia: Curbing Ethnic Nationalism via Integration and Demography

Written by Asfaw Dargue MeshalIn a recent post on the dangers of ethnic nationalism in Ethiopia, I explained why I agree with the idea now fashionable among followers of Ethiopian politics to establish Afaan Oromo as a federal language equal to Amharic. This policy will have two ‘effects’ – an integrative effect – it will help increase inter-ethnic integration – and a ‘placating’ effect – it will have a psychologically soothing effect on ethnic nationalists and reduce their zeal, so to speak. In this article, I’ll explain that the integrative effect is the strongest and most effective and that the placating effect will be minimal. In addition, unless accompanied by other policies that advance inter-ethnic integration and policies that ensure demographics do not favour ethnic nationalism, the policy step of making Afaan Oromo a federal language, by itself, will not

Ethiopia: After the Gondar Breakthrough

Written by Tesfaye Demmellash (PhD) Gondar shattered the no-war, no-peace status quo in which the Ethiopian opposition to Woyane tribal tyranny had been stuck for so many years. The rise of Gondar and, more generally, the Amhara people in Gojjam, Shoa, Wollo, and elsewhere in Ethiopia could be a decisive first step in the contemporary Ethiopian struggle for national survival and freedom. Having rocked the TPLF regime to its narrow sectarian and tribal foundation, the Gondar breakthrough and its wake could evolve into a protracted patriotic struggle for the liberation of Ethiopia from what can only be characterized as internal colonialism. But the critical question now is this: how can the heroic actions already taken, the sacrifices made and are still being made, and the limited gains achieved by popular uprisings in Gondar and Gojjam and in Oromo regions be defended

$500 Million ‘Refugee Job Creation’ Scheme for Ethiopia – Wrong Diagnosis for a Serious Problem

By Alem Mamo“We live in the age of the refugee, the age of the exile.” —–Ariel DorfmanPerplexingly, the United Kingdom, European Union and the World Bank on September 21, 2016 announced their plan to create a $500 million “industrial park” that will create jobs for 100,000 refugees in Ethiopia. Well, in hindsight the news would have been an exciting one for all of us who agonize about the suffering of refugees. However, when one takes a closer look, the proposed plan, the concept as well as operational fallacies, becomes clearer. The proposed scheme doesn’t address the problem from its core. In fact, it may well exacerbate and further complicate the issue.Firstly, the plan in its administrative and organizational framework is utterly flawed to put it mildly. Let’s first begin with the proposed project’s primary partner, in this case, the Tigray

The Ethiopian regime is harvesting what it sowed, Now it must acknowledge it!

Written by Addis StandardWhen news of a 100% victory by the ruling EPRDF came out shortly after the May 2015 general elections, everyone scorned the result; it was too stupid to be true. After all, democratic elections in a multinational state home to a near 100 million odd, which Ethiopia is one, were not supposed to be like this. So, the world was right to scorn the results because nowhere in it would similar experiences go down history books unchallenged. Alas, the ruling party in Ethiopia was not only intoxicated by the victory to see what was in the offing, but it was so sure to get away with it, as it did get away with many lapses of political orders in the last quarter a century. The reason why the world – not the government in Ethiopia – looked at

Making sense of athlete Kenenisa Bekele’s Pro TPLF comments

By Girma Tessema TolaOften times we (Oromo people ) tend to exert our energy and resources not on what unites us as a people but what divides us. Be it in politics, religion, socio-economic, and socio-cultural issues, we magnify our differences and forget our grand unifying common thread. Oromumma unites us and it's bigger than our differences and naturally should override our heterogeneous views on broader issues of the Oromo people.Back to the main point. Most of us watched Kenensisa's interview in Berlin, Germany about his views on Feyisa Lelisa's protest gesture at the Rio Olympics against the Ethiopian government human rights violations against the Oromo people. We all hoped and expected that Kenensisa would support and possibly follow the suit of Feyisa Lelisa and other athletes. But Kenensisa expressed his differing views and didn't fulfill our wishes and expectations. Oromia ‘Presidents’: TPLF’s Insult and Contempt for Oromo People

Oromia “Presidents”: TPLF’s Insult and Contempt for Oromo PeopleBy Ambo DambobaaHow does Oromia get its ‘presidents’ from? The Oromo people are always kept in the dark as to who their “president” will be, as to when they get one and who installs their ‘president” and for how long their “president” would be in office.Hasan Ali just popped up as Oromia ‘president’ in 1992. He disappeared all of a sudden in 1995, that is, he was humiliated and forced to exile. Kuma Damqsa appeared in 1995 and disappeared in 2001. Then came Junedy Sado as Oromia’s 3rd “Presient” only to get off the hook in 2005. Abba Dula Gammada showed up as Oromia “president” in 2005 and was let go in 2010. Then came Alemayehu Atomsa only to leave not only Oromia but also the planet earth itself in 2014. Oups!

TPLF Rejects Machar, Khartoum Wants Him Gone

By Fred OluochSouth Sudanese ousted vice president, Dr Riek Machar, is increasingly becoming a pariah in the region with Ethiopia now declining to give him asylum, while Sudan is restricting his political activities.Dr Machar — who is currently in Khartoum after fleeing Juba on July 11– has been denied asylum in Ethiopia where he had hoped to take refuge after completing treatment in the Sudanese capital.Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, in a media interview on the sideline of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York this week, said that Addis Ababa “does not need someone who is leading an armed struggle on its soil.”After the civil war broke out in Juba in December 2013, Ethiopia had hosted Dr Machar for most of the two-and-a-half years of the peace negotiations led by the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (Igad). Ethiopia at the crossroads with its government – Former U.S. ambassador to Ethiopia

By Tibor Nagy | For the Avalanche-Journal, September 25, 2016There has been considerable media coverage lately for a number of Ethiopian Olympic athletes who’ve publicly proclaimed their support for ongoing demonstrations against the Ethiopian government, and expressed fear that they may be harmed, or worse, if they now return home. The government responded by guaranteeing their safety and stating that all Ethiopians should be proud of the athletes’ achievements.Having just returned from taking a group of 10 U.S. universities to Ethiopia to explore partnership opportunities, I am more concerned about that country’s fate than at any time since my first diplomatic assignment there in the mid-1980s.First, so what? When hearing “Ethiopia” I’d venture most Americans still think of a country emblematic of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse with famines, droughts, conflicts and abject poverty. While once true, Ethiopia has

Let’s create a better Ethiopia rather than a beggar Ethiopia

By Obang Metho We in the SMNE will do whatever we can to work with all the people of Ethiopia and hope that others who support the TPLF/EPRDF, will come to the realization that this is the only way forward that gives us all a future. To accomplish these goals, we the people must acknowledge the historical past with its injustice towards different groups of people, but we must also look forward to building a better future for all. We should also be willing to give up something for a bigger cause. There is a price to be paid for a better future. It will cost us something which may include forgiveness, humility, compromise, and putting behind us some of our past grievances. The Ethiopia we have now under the ethnic hatred policy and ethnic apartheid regime is not good for the majority

Ethiopia: Oromo community in Minnesota struggles for visibility

Feyisa Lilesa posing with a Minnesota resident at Friday's event Courtesy of the Oromo Cultural Institute of MinnesotaWhen Feyisa Lilesa, a medal-winning Olympic runner from Ethiopia, visited Minnesota last weekend, most of the state didn’t notice.Lilesa became a local hero among Oromo people last month after flashing a well-known protest sign against his country’s government at the finish line. The move prevented him from returning home to Ethiopia, fearing reprisal from those in power, but it made him welcome among many Oromo people living in the United States.Oromos have been protesting against their government for decades, and many have fled the country since the 1970s fearing persecution. When violent demonstrations erupted over the Ethiopian government’s plans to reallocate farmland for development last November, some human rights groups said hundreds were killed by government forces in the backlash. Here in Minnesota, thousands

The Great Conspiracy against Ethiopia: Part 2 – The TPLF disorders

By Michyas GizawIn part one I wrote about the conjugal between the “illuminate” (ILU) and the Haughty Sebhat (HS): the architect of “Great Tigray” and the owner of “EFFORT”. Now I will try to say a slight about the disorders of TPLF; the toxic by-product of Sebhat and the little toy of the illuminate.Dear Ethiopians – time and history brings us into an area of great importance for the correct understanding of the current situation in Ethiopia. Presently Ethiopia is suffering from satanic tyranny (a conjugal between the Illuminate and TPLF). TPLF kills; never care about lives of Ethiopians. TPLF has deaf ears; never listen to the woes of the poor. The groups of TPLF never learn; they are boasting for constructing the Renaissance Dam or Addis-Nazareth motorway. TPLF has no obedience which springs form the heart and conscience. “Their

Ethiopia: Anatomy of a failed leadership

By Yilma BekeleThe ¼ Prime Minster of Ethiopia was at it again. Abay and Mesfin have been busy warning us of the consequences of getting rid of Woyane. Debretsion is more concerned about the rift in the military while Tigrai warlord Abay Woldu is swearing Wolkait or death. Aba Dula and Kassu were added to give color to discussion not that any body paid attention. It was quarter PM’s turn and he delivered his colorful speech to Woyane 100% Parliament. As usual it was all theatrics and void of any quotable moment. He did not fail to demonize any and all Ethiopians that do not agree with TPLF. HRW: Violence in Ethiopia Cannot be Ignored

By HRWHuman Rights Watch continues to be concerned about a number of country situations that are not receiving the attention they require from the Human Rights Council. In Turkey, since the coup attempt on July 15, authorities have jailed over 22,000 soldiers, officers, police, judges and prosecutors on suspicion of involvement with the coup. Up to 100,000 teachers and public servants have been suspended or dismissed. At least 131 media outlets have been shut down, and an estimated 116 journalists are in jail pending criminal investigation – the vast majority since the coup attempt. The state of emergency and emergency decrees have removed crucial safeguards against ill treatment and torture. The Council should urgently support calls by the High Commissioner to allow access to places of detention for independent observers, and for an independent investigation into the violations committed in southeast Turkey.Bangladesh

Kenyan Government Is Held Accountable for Supporting TPLF Dictatorship: OLF

OLF Press ReleaseForeign assistance from foreign countries near and far has helped the Tigirean People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) government of Ethiopia to stay in power unjustly for the last 25 years. Unintentional or intentional, foreign assistance provided to Ethiopia, has made it difficult for the peoples of Ethiopia to free themselves from the imposed orders of the anti-democracy and anti-human rights TPLF regime of Ethiopia.Because of the current popular uprisings in many parts of the country, the TPLF Ethiopian regime is hysterically paranoid, desperate and callous. TPLF regime: The pathogen of humanity

By Dr. Baro Keno DeressaIn medical terminology: Pathogen is an agent causing disease or illness to its host. Pathogens are mostly microscopic, such as bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and fungi.Today i am going to talk about the macroscopic pathogen of the humanity TPLF government. I said this because of my profound belief that, the TPLF government and their leaders are very much aware of the real situation in Oromia which is quite different from what they were trying to portray to the Ethiopian empire nations and international community. Before i am going to enter to my main point i would like to quote the universal declaration of humanity.Declaration on a shared humanity:Human being are born equal and that they all share hopes and aspirations, paths of fulfillment, paths of suffering, and dreams within a common journey as human beings.Human beings share

Ethiopia: OPDO is neither the the cause nor solution for the political crisis

By Jawar MohammedYesterday the regime announced that the top two puppets in Oromia have been removed and replaced by not so new faces. TPLF is either still dumb and numb about the depth of the crisis or chose to continue insulting the intelligence of our people. The cause of conflict between the regime and the Oromo and other peoples of Ethiopia is TPLF’s mission of and obsession with building and maintaining the supremacy of Tigreans. They have successfully built a system whereby power and wealth is monopolized in their hand. They are killing, jailing, exiling and reshuffling to preserve such domination. The puppet parties be it OPDO, ANDM or SEPDM were built and maintained to serve as tools of advancing and protecting this Tigrean supremacy. Hence reshuffling men and women at the head of these puppet parties does not make

You were among those whose academic journeys were of great interest to me. I followed the story of your academic journey from Addis Ababa University to your graduate studies in Finland. Redressing Widespread Social Unrest in Contemporary Ethiopia

By Asayehgn Desta*Though it is uncertain who has been appropriating it, Ethiopia’s economy has been showing monumentally high economic growth for the last fifteen years. Given this economic environment, Ethiopia’s investment climate has been on the right trajectory and as a result it has been appealing to many domestic and foreign investors. However, Ethiopia’s governance has been run without accountability. It is shot-through with corruption. Conspicuous rent-seeking behavior has become a way of life in the country because people in power have been extracting wealth for non-productive activities (Desta, 2014, p. 243). As vigorously argued by Hagos, Ethiopia is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. “Yet, corruption in both the public and private sectors remains a very serious problem throughout the country” (2016).Additionally, Ethiopia’s political landscape has been triggering flashpoints that indicate signs of deteriorating political stability. PM Hailemariam Desalegn accuses US over Ethiopian NGO’s? What a mockery!

By TekuretIn a recent video footage, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn accuses the United States for engaging in regime change in Ethiopia. He asserts that the purpose of the Charites Law that bans local NGOs from receiving more 10 percent of their budget from foreign donors is to restrict the involvement of the United States from interfering in the internal affairs of the Ethiopian politics and preventing the US-based human rights groups from initiating a color revolution in Ethiopia. His accusations are wholly baseless and his claims on the purpose of the Charites Law is a total lie and misleading. The iron-fisted Ethiopian state

By Adeyinka MakindeA political crisis of longstanding duration has been brought to the world’s attention by the actions of a competitor at the recently concluded Olympic Games. Marathon runner Feyisa Lilesa’s gesture of raising his arms aloft in the form of a cross as he was about to confirm his silver-medal position was a politically-motivated one intended to highlight the plight of the Oromo people of Ethiopia who vehemently claim to be perpetually marginalised by the country’s central government. The Oromo also claim to be the primary victims of an escalating crackdown on public dissent. But while the Ethiopian government strenuously contests the facts and figures behind each repeated claim by local human rights groups and international non-governmental organisations of mass incarcerations, torture and extra-judicial killings, the picture emerges of a nation perennially at struggle in the quest towards achieving

Peddling Hate and Division: Tigray People’s Liberation Front Vocation

“Monsters exist, but they are too few in number to be truly dangerous. More dangerous are the common men, the functionaries ready to believe and to act without asking questions.” –Primo LeviBy Alem MamoHate, whether it is at the individual or group level, is a serious and debilitating illness. First it consumes the carrier’s emotional, psychological and spiritual being before it is peddled into the ‘other’. The notion of the ‘other’ is the primary root of this dangerous and destructive illness. Through deliberate and systemic construction of fictitious narratives, the ‘other’ is portrayed as a monster, devilish, and in an extreme case sub-human. During the Rwandan genocide Hutu extremist radio stations described Tutsi’s as ‘cockroaches,’ and ‘it’ should be exterminated. The radio station declared, “you have to kill the Tutsi; they are cockroaches.” This hateful and monstrous narrative wasn’t built

Feyissa Lilesa: A man whose actions and ideals inspire us to embrace all Ethiopians as our people

By SNMEHuman rights work might be compared to preparing for a long race— like a marathon— requiring long, hard, and grueling dedication to a task where the final outcome— often years in the future—remains unknown. At times along the way, the barriers to success appear so large that one can easily get off course and go through periods where the possibility of reaching the ultimate goals looks grim. In the midst of that struggle, something can suddenly emerge from what otherwise appears as darkness, which acts to bring new light, insight and a change of attitude to those who witness it.For Ethiopians, that unexpected source of new inspiration is Feyissa Lilesa, the Ethiopian winner of the silver medal for the marathon Olympic event held in Brazil on August 21, 2016 His actions have jump started a swell of renewed hope and

Ethiopia: The Quilinto Massacre: The Truth Shall Be Revealed

By Zecharias ZelalemOn Saturday, September 3rd 2016, something sinister, ghastly, premeditated and honestly speaking somewhat poorly calculated, transpired in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa. The tragedy in question has, for the most part, managed to avoid the sort of outcry and global condemnation these incidents tend to get when the actors involved are from nations not allied with the United States and its NATO affiliates in their “war on terror.” It has been more than two weeks, and already we are faced with subliminal calls from the conceited to pretend it didn’t happen. At eight in the morning of that fateful day, the Addis Abeba sky, normally coated with layers of the rainy season’s fog was, assaulted by billowing smoke emanating from a raging fire that was consuming parts of the city’s Qilinto prison, home to hundreds of inmates including

Like a Little Boy, Abay Tsehaye is Hiding behind Helen’s Skirt

Like a Little Boy, Abay Tsehaye is Hiding behind Helen’s Skirt By LJDemissieSeptember 13, 2016To keep a grip on the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front’s (TPLF) power and throne, AbayTsehaye - an executive member of the Central Committee for many years - is running adisinformation campaign in the wake of the Amhara’s peaceful protests in Gondar. To discreditand humiliate the Gondar protesters, he claimed the protesters selectively attacked Tigrayanswho were residing in Gondar and forced them to leave the region. To agitate Tigrayans, hecompared the protesters acts with the Rwandan genocide against the Tuts. He implied thatEthiopia would disintegrate if the TPLF would be forced to lose its grip on power. And thesituation would turn out to be a civil war like Syria’s turmoil. For those who follow Ethiopia’s current affairs, Tsehaye is known for being good with bold-faced lies, and bad with

By ESAT NewsThe United States should use its leverage to ensure that the Ethiopian regime respect the human rights of its people, Congressman Mike Coffman said on Monday. In an exclusive interview with ESAT, Congressman Coffman, who represents district six of Colorado, where thousands of Ethiopians call it home, said that if the Ethiopian government ignores the resolution by the US and also by the UN Human Rights Commission, then “Congress should find additional tools to use.”“Certainly foreign aid is one to look at,” Representative Coffman further said.He stressed that if the aid that was meant to fight global terrorism is instead being used to suppress the Ethiopian people, then that aid should be brought into question. “We have to exercise all the leverage that we have,” Coffman said. The United States, the Congressman said, need to support the request by the

President Obama: Stop the Ethiopian Genocide

By Melaku TegegnDear President Barack Obama,One day on November 5, 2008, I got up at 5 a.m. to listen to the news of a great event in world politics that was just announced from Washington D.C.: the results of the US presidential election. I hardly slept that night due the suspense and eagerness to know if the first black presidential candidate won the election. Yes, you did. I was so emotional that had to fight mine back when I saw Jesse Jackson in tears. Yes, I was elated with joy, a joy with anticipation of hope for change as the foreign policy of the previous US administration had already brought the world to a brink of nuclear war vis-a-vis North Korea. But, that is not why I am writing you about now. I am writing you about the dire situation

Out-of-date and out of touch: The sun is setting for the TPLF and its affiliates!

By Gutu OlanaOut-of-date and out of touch! Being extremely repellant and devoid of relevance, it took me a great patience to listen to the mantra of the guardians of a repressive (but degenerating) system – Abay Tsehaye and Seyoum Mesfin – in their interview with FBC (Fana) on the current crisis in Ethiopia. Given the substance and the intonation of the interview, and these individuals’ apparent influence in TPLF (the master of EPRDF), one can’t help but be amazed at TPLF’s disconnection from the reality on the ground, and its narrow self-interest and unwarranted pigheadedness. Are they such a clueless people? We should note that they speak the heart and mind of the TPLF, whose only vision for Ethiopia is maintaining the unbearable (and unsustainable) status quo or the destruction of the country. With no hesitation, Seyoum recasts EPRDF (which we
