Eritrea: the African North Korea which thousands will risk anything to escape

Postby Aragaw » 03 Oct 2013, 14:53

Every year, many thousands of Eritreans go to extraordinary lengths to escape their country and start new lives elsewhere. This small nation in the Horn of Africa, with less than 6 million people, is one of the world’s biggest providers of desperate refugees.

There is no civil war in Eritrea: its people flee because their isolated homeland could pass as an African version of North Korea. Like the Kim regime in Pyongyang, President Isaias Afewerki keeps Eritrea on a permanent war-footing.

Most adults are conscripted into the army or forced to perform compulsory labour of some kind. Today, one Eritrean in every 20 serves in a bloated army with 320,000 soldiers.

Mr Isaias justifies this eternal mass mobilisation by claiming that neighbouring Ethiopia is scheming to re-conquer Eritrea. Just as the fictional state of “Oceania” was always at war in George Orwell’s “1984”, so Mr Isaias presents his repression as essential to guarantee the survival of the nation against outside enemies.

That message has some resonance because of Eritrea’s traumatic history. The country broke away from Ethiopia in 1993 after waging a brutal 30-year struggle for independence. The two neighbours have remained bitter rivals ever since, fighting a border war between 1998 and 2000 that claimed perhaps 70,000 lives.

At least 130 African migrants have died and many more are missing after a boat carrying them to Europe sank off the southern Italian island of Lampedusa.

A total of 103 bodies have been recovered and more have been found inside the wreck, coast guards say.

Passengers reportedly threw themselves into the sea when a fire broke out on board. More than 150 of the migrants have been rescued.

Most of those on board were from Eritrea and Somalia, said the UN.

The boat was believed to have been carrying up to 500 people at the time and some 200 of them are unaccounted for...

Fix the title of your thread.

Where in the heck that it say in any of the news outlets that there were 500 eritreans in the ragidy boat?

Any way go ejaculate as usual, but me as an individual hard core shaebia, I am not going to shed a tear to any Eritrean who illegally is deserting the nation, when our tegadelties were joining the front, even after they get their degrees from abroad.

All I say is good luck and congrats if they make it, but they should also understand crossing oceans in make shift boats is not a smart idea.

NB:
There are more ethios who perished in the Yemeni shores, running from woyanus rule, and there are millions who are silently dying in ethio.

Now that some of them are dead, they are no more good for their family and certainly to their country.
It is better you die fighting to better your people and in the process become a hero than to be eaten alive by sharks trying to run away from the responsibility your country expects of you.

EritPride,

No country's citizen in that region is spared from these hells. We all are in it.
