The 1937 Addis Ababa Massacre, Italy's National Shame, TPLF's Bookmarked Course

Post by Abdisa » 25 Dec 2017, 06:02

XXX

The Abyssinian fighters who lost their lives at the battle of Adwa must be turning over in their graves as the Adwans they sought to liberate have now fully embraced fascism and emulating their godfather Benito Mussolini's act of cruelty against unarmed and defenseless civilians.

A colonial massacre in Africa fully revealed for the first time

Image

Eighty years ago a colonial massacre of over 20,000 people was carried out by Italian fascist forces in Ethiopia in north east Africa.

In three days and nights of arson, murder and looting, thousands of men, women and children were burned alive, shot, beaten senseless, stabbed to death or blown to pieces.

It has been systematically covered up in Italy—and so has Britain’s role in hiding the truth. A particularly vile role was played by Winston Churchill.

A recent book by Ian Campbell has revealed in terrifying detail what happened.

Italy, led by fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, had invaded Abyssinia (present day Ethiopia) in October 1935. Mussolini claimed it was a humanitarian intervention to wipe out slavery.

In fact he hoped it could be the beginning of a “new Roman empire”. Bruno Mussolini, son of Benito, wrote newspaper articles about clusters of Ethiopians “bursting open like a rose” when bombed from above. He admitted to finding this spectacle “most amusing”.

Italy repressed resistance by brutal means, including the use of chemical weapons.

The rest of the world did virtually nothing in response.

Civilisation

Indeed there was widespread support for the fascists from reactionaries. Ward Price, the foreign editor of Lord Rothermere’s Daily Mail, argued that if Britain opposed war on “one of the last and most backward of independent nation states, we should be hindering the progress of civilisation”.

Pope Pius XI congratulated Italians on a “beautiful victory by a great and good people”.

In contrast Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky wrote, “If Mussolini triumphs, it means the reinforcement of fascism, the strengthening of imperialism, and the discouragement of the colonial peoples in Africa and elsewhere.”

In 1937 there was an attack by Ethiopian freedom fighters on Mussolini’s high command. It included an assassination attempt on Italian commander Rodolfo Graziani in the capital, Addis Ababa.

It was followed by a murderous rampage which resulted in the deaths of one in five of the entire population of Addis Ababa.

Researcher Julianne Weis writes, “While Graziani lay in a coma following the grenade attack, a killing force comprised of members the Italian Army, [fascist] Black Shirts, and civilians was organised. Forces were loosed on the city as the Italians feared the grenades thrown at Graziani were a precursor to wide-scale Ethiopian insurrection.

“Ethiopian servants were dragged out of houses and shot in the street. Black Shirts began burning down whole residential sections of the city, targeting Ethiopian homes with the residents still inside, and throwing any babies or young children who tried to escape back onto the flames.”

Further reprisal killings were then taken outside the city. Mobile gallows were erected and transported across the countryside.

Image

Graziani also targeted the Debre Libanos monastery for its symbolic link to the Orthodox church and Ethiopian cultural heritage, killing 3,000 monks, priests, and local residents.

Campbell argues that this was a methodical effort to wipe out Ethiopian resistance to Italian rule. Though unconscious when the killing began, Graziani took control of the subsequent reprisal executions.

He was never prosecuted for his crimes in Africa.

The Economist writes, “Britain, wary of setting awkward precedents, played an outsized role in sheltering Italians with blood on their hands. Mr Campbell cites a telegram written by Winston Churchill to his ambassador in Rome in 1944, instructing him to protect Marshal Badoglio, Italian commander of the Ethiopian northern front, who used poison gas, and is considered the top war criminal by Ethiopia.”

After the war, Churchill and then the 1945 Labour government both pressured Haile Selassie, the emperor of Ethiopia, not to seek justice. They used territorial disputes in Eritrea and the Somali Ogaden region to make him capitulate and not demand a reckoning. Sellout Coward!

Campbell has spent 20 years amassing documentary evidence on the extent of the reprisal killings in 1937. While the massacre has been memorialised in Ethiopia, the extent of the destruction has largely been hidden over the last decades.

Campbell has collected film and photographic evidence of the burnings and murders, the majority of which were taken by Black Shirts themselves as souvenirs of their time in Ethiopia.

The photos were initially gathered by the British revolutionary socialist and anti-imperialist Sylvia Pankhurst for her anti-fascist newspaper,New Times and Ethiopia News.

There are also documents from the national archives in Rome demonstrating that the massacre was deliberately planned and orchestrated by senior Italian leaders, and was not, as often asserted, a random act by a group of belligerent Black Shirts.

Ethiopia in 1937 is another warning of what fascism looks like

And when people talk about “European values” and “British values”, remember Addis Ababa in 1937.

Thanks for posting this. TPLF has never had Ethiopian development agenda. Ethiopia has been a warehouse to loot what it posses. They are referring to the same book of Mosoloni, Hitler, AS Apartheid when it comes to the mass genocide. They are not Ethiopians, like the Italians. They will never be. The scale of the crimes is now by far wider and bigger than anyone can ever imagine. The massacre of Italy can be much less now by the scale and level of systematic genocide (human, intellectual, cultural, economic, you name it).

You're the coward!

From whom is HIM going to get justice from?
Your colonial masters?

You secessionists are the reincarnation of Italian colonialism in Ethiopia today.

Eritrean secessionist collaborators advanced what Mussolini started.

Following the end of Italian occupation of Ethiopia, emperor Haile Selassies was restored to power. It was mostly exiled Ethiopians, few patriots and significant number of Ethiopian collaborators who worked in cahoots with Italian fascists that staffed and manned Emperor Haile Selassie’s post-war government. This post-war regime of Ethiopia that lasted till 1974 tried to cover up the heinous records of the Eritrean collaborators (whose heinous records against Ethiopia exceeded all other collaborators, including the records of Ethiopian collaborators in its magnitude) something that no self-respecting nation would do. In war-torn Europe, those who fought alongside the Nazi’s and fascists did not go scot-free, they were rather made to face justice for collaborating with Nazis and Fascists. The children of Nazi and Fascist collaborators were not allowed to be proud of the mercenary role of their parents.

Eritrea was rewarded hugely by the imperial regime of Ethiopia in terms of construction of schools, hospitals, roads, etc. at the expense of other provinces of Ethiopia. Eritreans who were made to grope in the dark after having been denied to pursue education beyond the three years of rudimentary elementary school in which they were taught about the greatness of Italy and the Roman race and the inferiority of Eritreans were graced with the construction of many schools, including many high schools and other institutions of learning so much so that they were among the best represented in institutions of higher education next to the capital city Addis Ababa. Eritreans were allowed to control the scaling heights of the Ethiopian economy (their dominance in the business sector was conspicuous till 1998). All these did not make Eritreans lessen their visceral hatred for Ethiopia and whatever Ethiopia stood for. Eritrean nationalists worked tirelessly to break up Ethiopia and finally they succeeded in that endeavor thanks to the Tigrean cabal by the name of TPLF that Eritreans helped and worked with till 1998 when they broke ranks owing to conflict of interest which revolved around appropriating the spoils of war.

As events later and today clearly show Ethiopia had paid and is still paying huge price for suppressing and covering up the untold, if violent, killing or decimation of 720,000 (seven hundred and twenty thousands) Ethiopian citizens by Italian fascists and the more than 100,000 (one hundred thousands) Eritrean askaris who were instruments of Italian fascist army that bayoneted pregnant women and hanged Ethiopian patriots while Italian pilots rained mustard gas on the defenseless people of Ethiopia.

Why would not they see us just as neighbors even long after they chose to secede from Ethiopia? Why are they fixated on Ethiopia? When will Eritreans stop their ill designs on Ethiopia? When will their negative obsession with Ethiopia stop? Since the creation of Eritrea in 1890, it not only served as the instrument of the evil machination of Italian colonialists but also successfully served as instrument of Ethiopia’s deconstruction by serving as proxy or pawns in the anti-Ethiopian war Arab nationalists (that runs the whole gamut from Nasser’s Egypt to the Baath parties of Syria, Iraq, conservative Gulf Arabs) and even neighboring Sudan and Somalia have been waging against Ethiopia.

In light of the continued enmity of Eritreans which dates back to 1890, the date of the creation of Eritrea as a synthesis of inimical Italian colonial design and hatred for anything Ethiopian, it is imperative to ask the following question. When are we Ethiopians going to realize that the poison which Italian colonialism planted in 1890 in the form of a divisive and malignant Eritrean identity, in what was once called Bahire Negash or Midri Bahiri and later renamed Eritrea in 1890, remains to be the anti-thesis of Ethiopia?

Coward is somebody which doesn't fight for one's rights and libery until the last drop of one's blood. Haile Sellasie could be a sell out for not trying to push until the end to regain the territorial integerity of the country and soverignty of its people, but what did the Eritreans themselves do in their over 60 years of colonial history to defend their country/liberty?

What we now know is instead of trying to reclaim their rights in the country they followed the road of basing their claim of "independence" on the mere ground of their colonial history, which Isayas Afwerki himself admitted to recently.

There is a saying in Afan Oromo which goes like, "gowa tokkicha arabsu, sana booda innu sanaan of-arrabsaa hafa" (you curse an ignorant person once, then the person will curse him/herself for the rest of his/her life, or something like that). And I think it is fitting in your case.

As this video footage below shows, when Benito Mussolini's Italian colonial forces arrived in Tigray, the Tigrayan grandfathers of Dawi the Tigrawi and Defend-Weyane-Lies gave them an intensely religious themed welcome reception fit for a Pope!! They even brought water to wash the Italian commander's bloody hands and declared him "innocent" for the atrocities he committed in Eritrea. It was then that the "White is Right" mentality started taking roots among the inferior Weyane. Today, when the white man says "Invade!," the inferior weyane ask "which neighbor?", or as the late Meles Zenawi would say "the order is a Godsend!"

That map in the video shows Axum in the middle of Eritrea.

Abdisa,

As far as "intensely religious themed welcome reception fit for a Pope!!"

If anything that is Ethiopian Diplomacy to [deleted] them in softly & kill them to the point no one is left to tell a story. That is Ethiopian history!

“Diplomacy is the art of telling people to go to hell in such a way that they ask for directions.”

― Winston S. Churchill

The fascists were dealt with by Ethiopians at the end! We have done similar welcomes & wiped invaders out many times before that and will do it again if need arrives. Trust me! 8)

Achamelehu Tamiru debunked the "Amara domination theory" in the recent interview with Prof. Ezkiel, he pointed out who the culprit of that "theory" was.

It was Bereketeab Habteselassie former EPLFite, who falsely attributed to the late Prime Minister Akililu Habtewold a false charge creating a chasm between Oromos & Amaras.

Tesfaye Gebreab has been promoting that "lie" to target the Amara population and the history of Ethiopia. Such people mislead some Oromo nationalists to build a monument that accuses Emperor Menelik & Amaras for unsubstantiated crime.

Isaias/EPLF deny it but, their hand is all over the background of the creation of independent Oromia on the ruins of Ethiopia.

Bottom line, they helped create TPLF and brought it to power as well. So, who is Ethiopia's #1 enemy?

Dawi the Tigrawi,

When did you find the time to "kill them softly" when you were too busy parading the Tabot in honor of the fascist Italian colonial forces, whom you welcomed with open arms and legs and treated them as if they were visiting angels? Watching the scene in the video, where you were arching your back to wash the bloodied hands and feet of the fascist Italian commander-- in a gesture that signals the cleansing of his evil deeds-- it speaks volumes about your definition of a "war." If that's how you fight your wars, then you have ZERO enemies and millions of MASTERS.

Abdi,

Nothing new that Ethiopians "parading Tabot"? Our priests did such things while Europeans were living in caves. The priest knew and feel superior over the "Albinos"; that is the truth! Sorry to say but, It is not like they were enslaved to think otherwise, like their northern brethren.

Amara/Tigre and many Ethiopian Orthodox view their own religion as the only top-down religion in the world. They believe that their God is the only deity in existence. Their God created humans and the universe, and gave humanity its only valid moral codes. So when they see the fascist "Albainos" roaming around with poison gas, they consider them evil and inferior in the first place. It is an honor for them to clean their dirty hands and feet. Didn't Jesus do the same? The were doing exactly same.

Only part of Ethiopia was colonized for 50 or so years; remember that! The rest was never colonized; that speaks volumes to the present Tigre/Amara & other personality in today's Ethiopia compared to the ones enslaved by the fascists in the rest of Africa.

Having said that, HIM did not do the necessary rehabilitation while bringing Bahr Negash back. The wrong personalities were rewarded big time. The part that was colonized is what is still haunting us; still imitating like their old "MASTERS".

As pointed out earlier, Eritreans who were denied to pursue education beyond the three years of rudimentary elementary school in which they were taught about the greatness of Italy and the Roman race and the inferiority of Eritreans were graced with the construction of many schools, including many high schools and other institutions of learning so much so that they were among the best represented in institutions of higher education next to the capital city Addis Ababa. EPLFites worked tirelessly to break up Ethiopia and finally they succeeded in that endeavor thanks to TPLF.

Yes, that TPLF, EPLF helped and worked with till 1998 until you broke ranks owing to conflict of interest which revolved around appropriating the spoils of war is the one you want to kill now.

The then British Prime Minister Winston Churchill knew that his Afro poodle named Haile Selassie deep in his heart harbored a burning desire to become just like the European colonialists of the day, so he offered him a deal he could not refuse-- to play the role of a colonialist in both Eritrea and Somali Ogaden on behalf of the British empire and he gets to kiss the royal hand of Queen Elizabeth-- which was a big deal at that time for African warlords aspiring to expand their territories through annexation, conquest and subjugation with the blessing of the British empire.
